  1. That’s why I’m not so quick to declare that someone like him should be starting over Yelich. He has undoubtedly been a key contributor for the last couple of weeks but, like Peterson, he was bound to cool off as the league sees more of him. I see both Taylor and Peterson as good, important depth pieces, but maybe not more than that.
  2. Apparently Anderson doesn’t know what he’s talking about when he says “The Brewers bats have been quiet today”. He must be missing all of the hard hit balls and bad breaks.
  3. I’m not “afraid” of the Cardinals, but I think they are much harder to beat than the Pirates, the current series notwithstanding. I think the expected wins in 7 games against the Cardinals is lower than in 7 games against the Pirates by a game or two. Same for 7 games against the Giants as opposed to 7 against the Marlins.
  4. They have hit alot of balls hard today, with very little to show for it. The Pirates have more hard hit balls and more to show for it. There has been nothing resembling a hard hit ball for the Brewers since the third inning. The last 10 outs have all been pretty meek.
  5. The Reds won, so the Brewers need to pull this one out to keep from losing a game off their lead heading into a weekend where just holding serve is going to be a challenge. Castellanos is expected back tomorrow to beef up the Reds offense.
  6. Everyone in the pen should be available with off day tomorrow. Even with everyone available the pickings are pretty slim. They aren’t in a good position to nurse a small lead through 3 plus innings like they did on Sunday. For the foreseeable future, the starting pitchers and offense are going to have to carry the day.
  7. It’s very hard to argue that that isn’t the case. The timing is quite coincidental otherwise.
  8. As long as deGrom stays out (and it doesn’t sound like he’s close to returning) I don’t see the Mets holding on. I also don’t think playing the Braves (who look like the best bet to supplant the Mets) is any bargain. But, with the current Covid issues destroying the bullpen, rising up to the #1 seed is the least of the Brewers concerns.
  9. Better get Yelich back before Garcia, Cain, and Taylor get their positive tests. That seems to be where this is headed.
  10. The nightmare continues. I fear this could cost us the division if any more big names end up on the IL. We'll be alright. We're a resilient ballclub and better to get it over with now then late in the season. All these guys will be back in short order. Yeah, who needs players. Meanwhile, as the cases mount the division lead could dwindle pretty quickly.
  11. We will agree to disagree. Um, yeah, I have noticed, but thanks for pointing it out. Since they won the game, how did it backfire? I would agree that the move flopped much more than backfired. The only possible damage it did for the Brewers on the field is that Axford’s failure to get out of the inning, and turning a 6-0 lead into a save situation, forced Counsell to bring in Boxberger to salvage the game. If Axford, or anyone else from the back end of the bullpen, had been able to finish that game without drama, Boxbereger would have been available last night and might have been able to help the Brewers avert that disaster.
  12. I mentioned this on another thread a few days ago, but I’m starting a separate thread to track this over the next two months. When I looked at this last Friday, the Reds and Brewers each had 59 games remaining. That is now down to 54 for the Brewers and 55 for the Reds. About half of their remaining games involve equal or close to equal numbers of games against common opponents, or opponents of equal stature (like the Mets and Braves). They also have 3 games against each other. The part of the schedules that involve the biggest disparity are: 1. The Reds had 13 games remaining against the Pirates compared to 6 for the Brewers (2 of those games have now been played). 2. The Reds have 6 games left against the Cardinals; the Brewers have 13. 3. The Reds have 7 games left against the Marlins (with whom the Brewers are done), and the Brewers have 7 against the Giants, who have no more games against the Reds. These blocks of 26 games for each team, which account for about half of the remaining games, seem to present a significant opportunity for the Reds to gain ground without needing the Brewers to collapse or the Reds to go on an unusually torrid streak. I’m going to keep an eye on these games as things move along to see if the Reds take advantage of this apparent opportunity. The Brewers are already 1-1 in their block. This weekend the blocks go head to head as the Reds play 4 against the Bucs while the Brewers play 3 against the Giants.
  13. Brault will be making his first major league appearance this season after making 4 rehab starts as he recovered from a lat injury. Brault has had mixed success against the Brewers in the past. They never seem to score a lot off of him, but he uses a lot of pitches to get through 4 or 5 innings. I wouldn’t think he would be going more than 4 or 5 today in any event. It would really help if the Brewers could put up some early runs and then keep adding on to take the pressure off Peralta and the bullpen. I would expect Boxberger and Williams to be available today if needed, but otherwise the pickings are pretty slim.
  14. That’s true for all but about 3 of the current occupants of the Brewers bullpen. Romano will probably be called up today to replace Hardy. It says something about now desperate the bullpen situation is that the Brewers are picking up guys who weren’t good enough for the Reds.
  15. Who would even be available to pitch the 10th if the Brewers don’t score here. I wouldn’t think they’d want to use Boxberger 3 days in a row.
  16. Maybe you should review the length of the game threads the last few weeks and report back. Of course the threads are short when the Brewers are in cruise control because there’s not much to talk about. The longer threads are for games that have some twists and turns along the way, positive or negative.
  17. The Reds left the tying runs on base. So, if the Brewers don’t come back this would make 11 times in a row that the Brewers and Reds have had the same result when both played on the same day.
