  1. BS ... this was 100% a playoff game. My blood pressure would prove it. Real baseball playoffs involve series that cover a few games and a few days and an opportunity for the home fans to attend at least one game in person. To me, this doesn’t qualify. If blood pressure is the measure, try the last game of the 82 season against the Orioles after the Brewers lost 3 in a row to them.
  2. I always said since they started the two wild card system that losing the wild card game wouldn’t feel like making the playoffs. Now I know why I felt that way. Over before it starts.
  3. You realize we get off days between the WC game and DS right? Well, one day.
  4. Not many. Grandal, Moustakas, and Thames were out. The bigger issue is that the Brewers used only pitchers who will not be on the playoff roster and even then Williams would have escaped the ninth if Austin playing first hadn’t butchered an easy line drive that put the tying run on second base with one out. After the Cardinals went ahead 8-0 in the third inning the Brewers game became as significant as a spring training game and the Brewers played it like one.
  5. Take Yelich out of that list and the stats are pretty depressing.
  6. It would look bad for the Rockies to have 4 men on base with no runs in.
  7. With the obligatory nod to “anything can happen in baseball”, I have a hard time convincing myself that the wild card game isn’t going to be a pretty dreary loss. For starters, Scherzer against the weakened Brewer lineup (and backed up by Corbin and Strasburg, if needed) has all the makings of a 20 plus strikeout game. And the Brewers pitchers are going to have a hard time with the Nats offense that smoked them in August. That having been said, I’ll be buying tickets for the first home game in the NLDS just in case.
  8. I'd like Moose or Hiura not to come up gimpy running to 1st in the 10th inning of a meaningless game. 90 is just a number. Moustakas has been out for several innings. The Brewers should send some pitcher out there and tell him to groove everything and give him a $10,000 bonus if he can give up a run without making it too obvious.
  9. While last night’s game was obviously a gut punch, I’m consoling myself with the thought that it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Even with a win, the Brewers’ likely destination would still be the wild card game in DC. The Cards have the edge today with Flaherty pitching in a home game and the Brewers using all of their top relievers yesterday. It might be better to avoid game 163 and get an extra day of rest for the bullpen so they can go all out with their best bullpen arms on Tuesday. Losing game 163 would make the wild card game even more difficult. I have a feeling that the Cards are going to win comfortably today by jumping out to an early lead while Flaherty shuts down the Cubs for 6-7 innings. For the Brewers to win I think they need to score early and send the Rockies into offseason mode. I don’t think we’re going to be seeing much, if any, of the Bullpen A Team.
  10. Not having both of them is obviously worse than not having just Yelich. You can't ignore the big hits that Braun has had since Yelich went out. Two grand slam HRs and a couple other HRs come right to mind. I could make a pretty persuasive argument that for big games, including playoff games, Braun is the Brewers second most important hitter. It's not that the Brewers can't win with Yelich and Braun both out, but against playoff caliber teams with much better hitters and starting pitchers, a difficult task becomes much more difficult.
  11. I can think of many, many games where I’ve been more upset than this one. Probably because this last month has been so improbable that I still have never reached a point where the Brewers going anywhere in the playoffs made sense. I feel like I’ve gotten a month of unexpected meaningful games and still have a wild card game as a consolation prize. Even if they had won tonight the odds still favored the Cards to win the division because of Flaherty pitching tomorrow, home field if there would be a game 163, and a Brewers lineup missing some key figures (arguably their best two big game hitters).
  12. DBacks are chipping away. Have to get up early for a flight tomorrow; headed to NY for a round of golf at Winged Foot on Wednesday. Maybe I’ll have a pleasant surprise when I get up tomorrow.
  13. It's 2-1 in the top of the 3rd?? It was 4-1 when I posted that.
  14. Cardinals bringing out the whooping sticks on the DBacks. DBacks announcers seem more interested in gushing over “Goldy’s” return to Arizona than the DBacks winning a game.
  15. I’m not hearing any gloom and doom, just not taking anything for granted.
  16. Tonight will be fun. I expect the Nats, Mets, and Cards to win so if any of them lose it will be a bonus.
  17. I would add the Mets-Marlins game to this list. If they can sweep their 4 game home series against the Marlins they could be in the running going into the weekend. The way I look at it the Brewers have to win 3 games to clinch a playoff spot. If they don’t theybare opening the door for someone to barge in.
  18. I think the Phillies know they are done. Realmuto is not in their lineup because of a sore knee, and I have a feeling he would be playing if they were closer. Scherzer was outstanding against the Cardinals last week, but a cheap hit and ball lost in the sun with 2 outs in the seventh inning kept the inning alive and Wieters delivered a 3 run HR. The Nats have Corbin tonight, Scherzer in game 2 tomorrow, and Strasburg on Thursday. They are well positioned to have their best starters available for Saturday and Sunday if they need them and still have Strasburg for the WC game. If they clinch early they’ll have the option of skipping Corbin and Scherzer’s last starts or giving them short starts before the playoffs.
  19. My biggest annoyance with these games is having no idea what the dates and times will be. My two daughters who live in town would love to go to a playoff game but, because of their jobs, weeknights aren’t real convenient and week days are out. I’m thinking about skipping the wild card game because that would be a weeknight for sure, but getting NLDS game 3 (first game in Milwaukee) and hope that it’s on Sunday, or at worst Monday night, and not Monday afternoon.
  20. Also paying attention to the Phillies and Indians tonight. Those teams are both still mathematically in playoff contention, though the Phillies are on life support, and are the opponents for the Nats this week. Since the Indians will likely still be in playoff contention going into the weekend one way or another, it might be better for the Phillies to win tonight and hope they will keep fighting until the Nats eliminate them.
  21. I found myself glad that the Cubs lost. When it gets this late I can’t take anything for granted, and the memory of the Brewers getting swept in Cincinnati (twice on shutouts in games started by Gray and Castillo) is too fresh. Plus, even the beat up and beaten down Cubs can sweep the Pirates. I’ll take as big a cushion over the Cubs as the Brewers can get and hope the DBacks can win one or two from the Cards. I don’t want to go into the weekend with the Brewers only ahead of the Cubs by 1 or 2 games and the Cardinals lounging around waiting for the playoffs.
  22. Phew. Blowing that one would have been hard to take.
  23. Cards tie Cubs at 2-2 in the 9th. Triple, SF.
