So, who tries to protect a one run lead for 3 innings today. (Not so) Bold prediction. Brewers aren’t going to win this game 2-1.

He’s a slumping hitter. A bunt and a 2 out, nobody on single to left doesn’t change that. The fact that he is bunting with a runner on base and 2 outs tells me that he knows he is struggling. Yep. Hopefully that last slap single is a good sign he’s coming out of it. He’s been bad. Very bad as of late. I added his July line to my last post to quantify how bad he has been. Unfortunately, Grandal and Thames had pretty weak Julys too. Grandal kept his OPS somewhat respectable (.726) with walks, but his power has disappeared. Having an OBP higher than your slugging percentage is not what you want from a guy who is supposed to supply power.

Not like this is anything new, but the Brewers are hardly taking maximum advantage of their scoring chances. Yelich has looked pretty bad at the plate the last few days. A lot of late swings on balls he could drive and rolling over and dribbling balls to the right side.

Probably not. If he’s running hard he is going to be headed down the line. If the catcher is backing up the throw he would have a hard time reaching second. Maybe seeing he had time to throw caused Profar to lollipop it.

Moustakas continues to struggle.

Yelich’s speed going from first to third was like leading a double steal. Most runners would have parked at second on that ball.

1-2 games. But, since they actually tried Aguilar at third once or twice it isn’t out of the question. Part of the problem is that having a SS who covers a lot of ground, and serves as the rover in the shifts, covers up for weak fielding 2B and/or 3B. A SS with little range and a weak arm could cause a lot of problems.

The Brewers could really use, and might need, an offensive explosion today. I’m sure Hader is unavailable today because they aren’t going to pitch him 3 days in a row with a Cubs series coming up, so I think they’ll have trouble winning a close, low scoring game.

Maybe we should have traded Gamel yesterday, he seems the odd man out here. Pretty much have Shaw getting the nod over him. Gamel is probably in the perfect role. He really doesn’t hit well enough to be an everyday corner outfielder. The fact that he has had some big hits recently kind of hides the fact that he hasn’t been hitting very well in general. For the Brewers he can get a couple of starts a week and be available as a pinch hitter, pinch runner, or defensive replacement.

Expecting Grisham to produce anywhere close to what Hiura has done so far is begging to be disappointed. With Hiura, the thing you heard the most is “he’s hit everywhere he’s gone”. The same can’t be said for Grisham, whose breakout is much more recent. Right now he’s hitting in an environment where career AAAA players like Saladino put up impressive numbers that don’t transfer well to MLB. Whereas playing Hiura in place of Shaw, who has struggled mightily all season, was a no lose proposition, giving at bats to an unproven rookie over veterans like Cain and Braun, who were actually two of the team’s more productive hitters in July (compared to the slumping Thames, Moustakas, and Grandal) could be a negative for the offense. With the off days in August there won’t be as much need for days of rest for the veteran regulars. As I’ve said many times, if the Brewers are going to stay in playoff contention they’re going to need the offense to start producing to its considerable potential, something it hasn’t been doing for much of the season. Giving Grisham enough at bats to give him a fair test at this stage of the season is a gamble. If they do it, I hope it works.

Hader better nail this one down because the bullpen is going to be a little thin tomorrow. Too bad the Brewers can only win a game by more than a run or two about once a month.

He’s really not much different than most of the relievers the Brewers have to throw out there.

Seeing Wang come in reminds me how much it bugged me that they used a roster spot on him in 2014 when they could have used a major league pitcher that they could actually put into a competitive game.

Badly need a big hit here. Hard to see the Brewers winning this one 3-2.

My overall reaction to the moves is that, looking at this year only, the Brewers pitching staff is worse than it was two weeks ago (when it wasn’t looking good) and not significantly better (just a little deeper) than it was two days ago. It’s going to take a hot streak from the offense to keep the team in playoff contention, and maybe just to keep them above .500 when they return home next week.

Well, the Brewers are picking up more bodies, but nothing that will significantly improve their pitching. I wonder how many, if any, of these deals they would be making except for the recent injuries.

fuddy-duds! How dare they try to make the ballpark experience more enjoyable for most fans. Teams that are near the bottom in attendance can’t be too choosy.
