  1. I’m sure he has, but even healthy Yelich wouldn’t have scored from first on Pina’s hit. ETA: According to Baseball Reference, Grandal has scored from first on a double 7 times in his career, including once this year. That’s out of 56 times that he has been on first when a double was hit. That wasn’t a double. Pina essentially took second because nobody was covering Right. Not the play to use as an example of how slow Grandal is. Regardless, it’s hard to criticize the speed of a guy who’s caught as many games as Grandal has this year and in his career. Those catchers get slower as the season wears on and from one year tomthe next.
  2. Better hang on to this one because it’s probably the last we’ll see of Hader this weekend.
  3. And this despite Jose Ramirez looking like Travis Shaw (2019 edition) for much of the year, Kluber and Salazar out, and they freaking traded Trevor Bauer—who Milwaukee would fall all over themselves justifying his craziness because of how pitching-starved we are. And somehow it all works. They’re like the Bizarro Brewers. Ramirez has an OPS over 1.000 since mid June, so he has been a big contributor to their turnaround.
  4. Side note. The Indians beat the Twins tonight to move into a tie for first place after being 11 games out on June 15.

  6. Win or lose this is the kind of game that hIghlights why, at least for me, the Brewers are a long shot to make the playoffs. Other teams in the wild card chase, like the Nats, Mets, and Cards look to be much better positioned for the stretch run. It really helps to have some pitchers that have a chance to go 7 strong innings.
  7. When you need at least four relievers every game you have to be a little judicious about how often they have guys throwing in the bullpen. Yup. September can’t get here fast enough. An expanded roster isn’t going to do any good if all it does is offer a greater number of unreliable relievers. Last year the Brewers went into September with Knebel, Hader, Jeffress, Burnes, and Soria. This year they have Hader (who hasn’t been so great lately) and then a bunch of question marks.
  8. He got that save and looked absolutely electric. He's pretty much looked like crap since then. But his history says he is prone to wildness, so getting overly excited about one game (which ended on a fly ball to the warning track) seemed kind of silly.
  9. Claudio lucked out there. Completely boneheaded toss with no chance to get the runner. Fortunately for him the Rangers don’t have a challenge.
  10. Remember two weeks ago when some people thought Peralta was going to provide a second dependable option in the bullpen. He has since shown why any expectation that the Brewers can be successful using last year’s formula is unrealistic.

  12. Contract selected/purchased is the official move in their case, since they weren't on the 40. Mauricio Dubon, however, was recalled when he made his debut. I get what you’re saying about technical baseball contract terminology. But stories about Dubon, Hiura, and Grisham said they were being “called up” to make their MLB debuts. The language in baseball makes perfect sense compared to college sports where a “commitment” has no binding effect at all but a “letter of intent” is binding. That is really backward.
  13. This thought makes me want to throw something in frustration: Why are baseball players being promoted when they are recalled, which means they did well, but contaminated food and cars and stuff is being demoted since being recalled means they were defective? The same thing means the opposite. HOW CAN THIS BE?! I this a blue post? If not, not it is weird. Definitely weird. Recalled, as in called back to where someone or something has been before, doesn’t have anything to do with whether it is being done because of something good or bad. Usually when a player is being brought to the big leagues for the first time they say he is being called up or brought up, not “recalled”. Looking back at stories this year about Hiura and Grisham should confirm that.
  14. I suppose it’s possible that a team that has lost a lot more series than they’ve won over the last 10 weeks will suddenly start winning, or at least splitting, almost all of its series the rest of the way. But breaking down each series that way highlights how dramatically the Brewers will have to turn things around to stay in contention to win the division.
  15. With 3 teams a half a game behind the Brewers and a few not much further behind than that, there’s not much point speculating on this. Even if they get there, they will probably need to use every arm available just to qualify. They won’t have the luxury of saving a pitcher for the wild card game.
  16. Opposing teams are going to keep throwing out every crap lefty (like Allard) they can find against the Brewers until they start hitting them better. I'd do the same thing if I was the opposing manager. They need Yelich back hitting lefties, and Pina, Braun, Hiura, Cain and Arcia have to do their jobs. Getting Frietas up at some point probably wouldn't hurt either. The Rangers dredging up Allard from the minors to start against the Brewers is a perfect example of why comparing the Brewers record against lefty and righty starters can be misleading. I think if you look at a list of the lefty starters the Brewers have faced, there is a higher percentage of scrubs than on the list of righty starters.
  17. No. I still think it will take 90 wins at least to win the division and I don’t see the Brewers doing that given the state of their pitching staff. They could make it interesting if the offense would get hot, but even that might not be enough. It’s fair to say “look at what happened last year”, just as it’s fair to say “look at what happened in 2014 and 2017”. The Brewers simply don’t have enough reliable relievers to put together a sustained stretch of winning series, especially when they have to cover a minimum of 4 innings every game. The off days in August might help keep them afloat, but unlike last year they don’t have enough off days in September for even the expanded rosters to help. At some point you need some quality, not just quantity.
  18. The Brewers have been lucky that Williams has been hurt most of the season. He had a number of shut down outings against them last year.
  19. In a vacuum you’d think Grisham in right would make more sense. But maybe with the lefty starting they think there might be more action in left. I wonder if Counsell will flip them when the first righty reliever enters the game.

  21. Who would you have put in? Hard to believe there isn't a single pitcher on the team faster than Grandal. Not really that hard to believe. And not hard to believe that they don’t want to risk an injury to a pitcher that doesn’t run the bases very often. Davies, Gonzalez, Houser, Hader, Peralta, Albers, Jeffress? Not seeing real good pinch running options there.
