  1. I would put the gimmick of Grandal leading off to rest and put Gamel in the leadoff spot. The problem with the Brewers offense last week was that virtually nobody was hitting (including Yelich and Grandal), not the order in which guys were making out. Putting low percentage hitters like Arcia and Saladino in the ninth spot doesn’t do much either. Having the pitcher come up earlier offsets whatever value there might be.
  2. Just think how mediocre that would look if you took out what he did against the Brewers. He needs another series with the Crew to recharge his batteries.
  3. Hendricks is coming off the DL so it’s just Hamels now. Getting Kimbrel up to speed will have a positive cascading effect on their bullpen. The Cubs offense is much better than the Brewers. The Cubs have had a slog in June too, but they had a significantly tougher schedule. They aren’t unbeatable, but they have to be a big favorite over the Brewers, especially if Hamels isn’t out too long. If nothing else they have a big advantage in the head to head games because they can throw out those lefties to castrate the Brewers offense. I wouldn’t rule out the Reds making a run at the top. They have a solid pitching staff and their offense could get a boost with Babe Gennett returning to the lineup. The Brewers are going to have their hands full getting even two wins from them this week.
  4. Facing four righties against the Reds I think it’s safe to say he’ll be starting the next 4 days in a park where he has had success.
  5. The mark of a good team is winning significantly more often than losing. Saying the Brewers should be sellers at the deadline is silly, but saying they have been “gross” is pretty accurate. Just playing .500 ball this month with a schedule loaded with home games and games against teams with losing records is NOT the mark of a good team. It’s more the mark of a team that blew a golden opportunity to make some headway toward a playoff run.
  6. Nope. Albers with the save opportunity. Brewers wins without Hader appearing have been extremely rare this month.
  7. Freitas Grisham Dubon We’ve seen how gaudy numbers in the PCL translate to production for the big club.
  8. Is the ball just not carrying as well at MP in the relatively humid conditions? It seems like there have been a number of hard hit balls hitting the wall or being caught on the track that were flying out earlier in the year.
  9. When I said I couldn’t figure out how the Brewers would score today I forgot about the clutch hitting of Zach Davies, and even that run should probably have been cut down at the plate. Other than the near HRs there hasn’t been much from the offense today. Hiura has had a rough day both at the plate with opportunities to advance or drive in runners and on the basepaths.
  10. For a few minutes there I thought the Brewers might get out of the top of the first with a tie. Maybe tomorrow.
  11. Before the season started I didn’t think I’d be looking at a Brewers lineup and wondering how they were going to score. Grandal is overdue for a day off, but that takes one bat out of the lineup. Cain has obviously been awful, and now Yelich (after almost a full year of superhuman production) has, to use his words, “been hitting like a pitcher” for the last two weeks. Facing a lefty won’t help him or Moustakas. Then the righty brigade of Braun, Hiura, Aguilar, and Pina (one rookie and three underachievers, including 2 near automatic outs), followed by the pitcher and Arcia. Maybe the Brewers learned something about Brault when he tied them up in knots when he faced the Brewers earlier this month. But, with Davies recent struggles and this lineup, it could be a very dreary loss of the 6-1 variety.
  12. Yelich is obviously frustrates and fighting himself right now, as evidenced by his comments last night that he has been hitting like a pitcher for the last two weeks.
  13. Selfishly, I wish Yelich would skip the Derby. He’s facing his first real slump in almost a year and is playing every day trying to carry the team on his back. The nonstop activity of the offseason may be catching up to him. I’d like to see him take it as easy as possible during the All Star break while starting in the game and getting a couple of ABs. On the other hand, if it’s something he really wants to do, then let him take advantage of the opportunity. Life and fame can be short.
  14. But, with someone other than Woodruff starting, Hader available for one inning at most, and a lefty going for the Pirates, it isn’t very likely. Today was the salvage game.
  15. I really wonder if the chemistry on this team is going down the drain. I also think that the Grandal leading off gimmick has played out. I’ve always had the opinion that the order in which guys bat doesn’t make that much difference as long as you aren’t doing really stupid stuff like putting your best hitters at the bottom. The team isn’t scoring because Grandal and Yelich have both had quiet weeks and nobody is picking up the slack. If nobody is hitting you aren’t going to score plain and simple. Batting the injured Cain fourth last night seemed ridiculous, yet he surprisingly got the big hit that led to their two runs. Arcia had 3 big hits, including 2 HRs in the last two wins, but he’s on the bench now. Go figure.
  16. Today better be the salvage day. If the Brewers can’t win with their best starter on the mound it isn’t going to be easier against the lefty tomorrow. He pretty much handcuffed the Brewers the last time he faced them.
  17. Considering the slate loaded with losing teams a .500 record in June is a major fail.
  18. How did he do for San Antonio today? I don’t know, but isn’t that what some folks said about Hiura when he was in San Antonio? Bringing Hiura back was obviously the right move, but this team’s problems run a lot deeper than one player. And now that Grandal and Yelich have gone cold there isn’t much punch in the lineup.
  19. It’s six. And 10 of the last 13. The Pirates are the only team the Brewers have won a series against in the last 13, and now they can’t beat them either.
  20. Maybe if Shaw had been in the lineup they could have picked up another run or two.
  21. I disagree. We are going to salvage a win on Sunday after losing the first two. It's the Brewer Way. There’s no game on our 10 pack this weekend so I won’t be there to bring home the salvager.
