  1. I don’t really care about 50 home runs. I just hope Yelich doesn’t mess himself up trying to hit home runs at the expense of hitting the ball to all fields.
  2. That was a big game to pull out. I hate going into an off day after the Brewers get swept because it puts me in a sour mood for almost 3 days.
  3. The Brewers offense has really laid an egg this weekend. Shut out for 6 innings on Friday and only scored a bunch of consolation runs, several of them unearned, until the game was out of reach. 2 runs in the first inning yesterday and then nothing until the two Baltimore chop hits in the 9th while twice squandering golden opportunities. 2 solo HRs today and nothing else and now staring a sweep in the face unless they can generate something soon. Pretty big disappointment after looking like they were getting something going in Philadelphia.
  4. Braun strikes out without one strike being thrown to him. Another golden opportunity wasted after some of the luckiest hits you’ll ever see.
  5. Yelich has had one great game and 8 pretty lousy ones on this trip. He has left a ton of runners in scoring position.
  6. This is quickly turning into a disappointing road trip with a lot of missed opportunities.
  7. Two struggling starters going for the Braves the next two days. Need to repeat the Phillies series by winning out after losing the first game to get out with a good road trip. At least make the game watchable since there’s no Bucks game to bail out to tonight.
  8. That looked like Hiura’s decision. He saw where the ball was headed and decided to go on his own
  9. As I said at the end of the game thread last night, the backup catcher should only have to start one game in the next 10 days. Because of the off days next Monday and Thursday, Grandal can catch today, 2 of the 3 games in Atlanta, both games against the Reds, and at least the first game against the Phillies next weekend. So, bringing up Nottingham makes sense because he will be serving mainly as the emergency backup catcher and isn’t likely to get many ABs. If Pina is going to be out more than 10 days they can consider their other options later.
  10. There’s no reason for the Brewers to do anything dramatic with the backup catcher as long as Pina’s injury won’t keep him out more than 10 days. With off days Monday and Thursday next week, Grandal could catch tomorrow, 2 of the 3 against the Braves, both games against the Reds, and Friday and Saturday against the Phillies. Pins could come off the DL if healthy and catch a week from Sunday. So, whoever is the backup catcher would only have to start one game and be available for emergency duty the rest of the time.
  11. Yelich is one of those great hitters who gets a few hits even when he’s not seeing it well.
  12. For a guy who isn't supposed to be much of a defender he hasn't looked bad at all. Other than dropping a simple looping liner but fortunately recovering to start a DP he’s made the basic plays so far.
  13. Between the double plays and failures with multiple runners in scoring position the Brewers are in a maddening stretch of leaving runs on the table.
  14. Seeing Hiura get a hit in his first MLB at bat reminds me of seeing BJ Surhoff’s first AB in 1987. We had seats in the lower deck behind the plate and realized early on that we were sitting directly behind Surhoff’s family. When he got the hit some of the family members were bouncing around excitedly while his Dad sat relatively stoically with his arms folded and a smile on his face that said “That’s my boy”. Surhoff hit a big game winning home run the next day in the Brewers third win of the season opening 13 game winning streak. The sad postscript is that a couple of weeks later Surhoff’s Dad died unexpectedly from a heart attack. At least he got to see his son make the big leagues.
  15. I haven’t been this excited since Randy Ready came up after tearing up the minor leagues. Ever since then I’ve taken a wait and see approach about prospects. Hopefully Hiura will be closer to Braun than Ready. Given the Brewers usual approach of giving players a day or two to get acclimated I wouldn’t expect to see Hiura in the starting lineup tonight. Maybe a pinch hitting appearance before going into the starting lineup as early as tomorrow.
  16. Good thing they have 119 to go after this then. The Brewers have been advertising that “every game counts”. Last year proved that to be true. Only scoring 4 runs on 11 hits, several for extra bases, and 8 walks, leaving 14 men on base in 7 innings is going to frustrate me.
  17. Unless the Brewers can pull this out it is going to be a very bitter, maddening loss. So many golden scoring chances squandered and some misplays in the field to give the Phillies life.
  18. The Cubs were the hottest team in baseball coming into the series, and they still are.
  19. The Brewers offense isn’t well suited for cold, wet conditions with the wind blowing in.
  20. I realize that the conditions are the same for both teams, but baseball in this kind of weather really stinks.
  21. The Cubs huge advantage has produced 2 runs in 24 innings for them. I do think the Brewers hitters don’t perform well in cold weather and with the wind blowing in making home runs much more difficult. But I’m not sure the Cubs are that much better. Remember that 4 game sweep last April when the Brewers got shut out 3 times and the Cubs won low scoring games? After that experience just avoiding the sweep this weekend doesn’t seem so bad. Winning row of three would be sweet.
  22. That has to be the most pleasing win of the season. Picking up a win at Wrigley is great any time, but a shutout against a team that has been hot and scoring without home runs is very nice. The sac flies by Gamel and Grandal were my two favorite ABs of the game.
  23. I would give Arcia the benefit of the doubt that he ran through that stop sign because he saw that the throw from the outfield was going to go over the cutoff man. He might have had a better angle to see that than Sedar, who had come down the line.
