  1. The pitching is on the verge of a complete collapse and now the Brewers only have one off day before the All Star Game. Playing teams with losing records or not, this stretch might expose the Brewers as pretenders.
  2. I’ll just say it bluntly and pessimisitically. The Brewers aren’t making the playoffs without significant improvements in pitching. Getting cuffed around by the Marlins and Giants should be all the evidence anyone needs, but having to use Claudio to pitch to multiple hitters is the clincher.
  3. Tinkering with the top of the batting order would likely have no impact on the Brewers run scoring. The way it is set up now accomplishes three things. It alternates lefties and righties about as well as they can do it, puts the faster base runners ahead of the slower ones, and gives Yelich a lot of at bats. Cain’s plunging OBP is hurting the offense a lot more than Braun’s hitting, but I wouldn’t really want to put Cain lower in the order unless and until he establishes that this is a permanent regression. Braun is maddening when he has nights like last night, but it’s easy to forget how many key hits he has had this season. Just last weekend he had a game breaking 3 run HR on Friday and a tie breaking RBI single on Saturday. His first inning HR against Verlander didn’t hurt either. As other’s have said, Braun’s offense is pretty low on the list of the Brewers problems.
  4. This is shaping up as a rough series. Facing two lefty starters and a lefty closer in a park where the Brewers can’t hit home runs but the old, boring opponent can. To top it off, they’ll have Estabrook calling balls and strikes today where replay can’t correct his mistakes. Bumgarner has been erratic this year, but with the strike zone Estabrook uses for the Brewers batters he should be good for at least two K’s per inning.
  5. I always am a little anxious when the Brewers play in a park or environment that isn’t conducive to home runs. Like when they play in Wrigley Field when it’s 35 degrees and the wind blowing in. Playing in SF they’ll have to find another way to score runs. Maybe Yelich can pick up a few triples.
  6. You see two games at Houston on the schedule and you hope to get with one win. They you see Verlander is pitching one and figure getting even one is going to be tough. This looks like a throwaway of two games like when the Brewers went to Cleveland last year and lost to Kleber and Carrasco.
  7. The Brewers are taking full advantage of the absence of those Pirates pitchers like Kuhl and Williams who tied them in knots last year.
  8. Davies isn’t the kind of pitcher they like to use in All Star games. If he makes the team he probably wouldn’t get in or would be saved for extra innings. Hader is a lock if for no reason other than they like to throw out a succession of hard throwing closers. Not to mention that he qualifies solely on merit. Moose and Grandal should be no brainers.
  9. It’s not often that you see a guy go from carrying the offense on his back, like Aguilar did for awhile the first half of last year, to being a complete dead weight in the order, like he is now. If he got a hit every time he hit the ball hard he’d still have trouble topping the Mendoza line.
  10. How much would you love to see how an automated ball/strike caller would compare to what the umps call, and focus on pitches where the calls are different. It doesn’t seem like it would take much for the automatic calls to be better, or at least more consistent. If nothing else it would remove any personal bias that an umpire might have for or against certain hitters and pitchers.
  11. A little late on this because the site was down when I checked. I was also at yesterday’s game to extend my record for this season to 7-0. It was a nice win, but the first few innings took forever. I want to bookmark one thing about the game. The next time Jeffress gives up a run or two on cheap hits, remember how fortunate he was yesterday. Three sharply hit balls right at infielders allowed him to get out of the inning with just 5 pitches, but he sure didn’t fool anybody.
  12. We’re getting closer and closer to the point that Aguilar isn’t going to be able to get enough ABs to get out of his slump. It’s too bad considering how well he did for so much of last year, and how well liked he is, but the team can’t afford a dead spot on the roster.
  13. I said yesterday that I would be disappointed if the Brewers didn’t win at least 4 games on this homestand. Now I feel like they’ll be lucky to win 2.
  14. Getting behind by 4 runs early really takes the starch out of a team and having the other team add on almost every inning completely kills them. The Brewers would probably be better off forfeiting tomorrow and taking a day of rest. They aren’t likely to do better than the 9-0 forfeit score with First Inning Freddy and the Gas Can Five on the mound.
  15. It’s going to be interesting to see how Nelson does tonight, especially because the pitching, which seemed to be stabilizing, has suddenly looked very shaky again. Gonzalez and Chacin (who has struggled all season) on the DL, recent rough outings from Anderson and Woodruff, and several relievers looking like gas cans. Nelson being able to return to the rotation and be effective looks more critical now than it did a couple of weeks ago. He may be running into a confident, hot hitting team. They scored 9 in each of their last two games before yesterday’s debacle.
  16. My bet is that either Shaw or Aguilar won’t be around too long and that Hiura will be back soon enough. Shaw is going to get a chance to snap out of his slump and if he doesn’t he will be back in San Antonio. If Aguilar continues to slump the Brewers may have no choice but to try to peddle him to a team (probably in the AL) that can use a right handed power hitter and will take a flyer on him, or DFA him. A guy who can only play one position (and not very well) and is not hitting is a luxury the Brewers can’t afford.
