  1. Are they? Should they be? I realize the Cardinals won the division last year but other than 1B and 3B, is Saint Louis clearly better than Milwaukee in any other area? We both have Contreras at catcher, so that’s a push? 🙂
  2. Just providing an endorsement of the 20% discount on the Caretaker subscription. For less than $1 per week, the ad-free experience is a great value.
  3. I am curious how ZiPS sees us three wins worse than last year. I think it is conceivable our offense and pitching is equal or greater than it was last year.
  4. Does Devin Williams call his pitch a change up? Your explanation makes total sense on why it is a screwball.
  5. In fairness to Mark Kotsay, he never should have been put in that position.
  6. I am usually more positive than this but I’m wondering if we also need to run this series back and rank order ‘worst CF in Brewers history’ so we can reference Mark Kotsay.
  7. Only 15,030 for paid attendance on July 4 against the reigning World Series champions? 122 pitches for Ron Robinson that day. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL199007040.shtml

  9. I remember staying up late to watch Ben Hendrickson’s debut against the Dodgers in 2004. 5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Took the loss. 3 RBI from Paul Lo Duca was too much to overcome. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN200406020.shtml

  11. On June 18, 2021 the Cubs were in first place. On July 19, 2021 they were 9.5 GB and in 4th place in the division.

  13. 11 months ago to the day, Aaron Ashby made his MLB debut starting against the Cubs, too. That was a game I may never forget. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL202106300.shtml

  15. Splitting with the Cardinals in Saint Louis seems fine. 17 runs in 4 games compared to 15 runs allowed. 16 games against the Padres, Mets, Cardinals, Blue Jays and Rays in June.

  17. Using the Cardinals series as an example, if the Brewers fall behind by four runs then the opposing team will use a less talented relief pitcher. For example, on Friday, Keston hit his home run off Kodi Whitley. Whitley was just recalled from Triple-A and has not been particularly effective in 2022. On Saturday, the Brewers plated two runs off TJ McFarland in the 9th to lose 8-3. McFarland’s ERA was 7.31 entering that contest. Understandably, I believe the Brewers offense is more effective against bad pitchers compared to good pitchers. I don’t think it is fair to say the Brewers offense is simply better when they are losing.

  19. The 2005 season when the Brewers finished .500 was such a fun year. That was an exciting offense with: Weeks, Fielder, Hardy, Jenkins, Lee, Hall, Cirillo, good Wes Helms and yes, Brady Clark.

  21. I think a broad point is that Narvaez, by design, is an imperfect catcher. He hits RHP relatively well and when paired with a catcher who hits LHP well then the Brewers get good production from the catcher spot. Combining two imperfect catchers through platoon splits is usually better and more efficient than spending $20+ million on Realmuto - if Realmuto would even consider Milwaukee as a destination. We can’t devote 20% of our payroll to a catcher.
  22. In 2020, when Urias had a .608 OPS and Grisham had .808 OPS and won Gold Glove plus Davies had a 2.73 ERA - the trade looked pretty dim. Now, in 2022 the trade looks great. Probably still for both sides despite Grisham’s slow start.
