  1. No doubt the Cards caught a break twice in as many innings. The first call on what was called a foul tip appeared to have missed the bat and touched the ground before it went into the catchers glove, The home plate ump heard the sound and the 3B ump saw the bounce. The batter did not break for 1st, but casually stood at the plate. A deke? It was a tough call. On the second call the ball beat the runner to the plate but he slid very wide to avoid the tag. It was impossible to tell if Pierzinski's swipe tag got him, but when the runner made a second attempt to touch the plate AJ reacted with a late 2nd tag. The ump was baffled and didn't rule the out until after the runner beat the second tag. It was indeed a strange call. But Matheny was due for a break. I believe that he has the lowest success rate on reviews in the NL. I fully expected to lose both reviews. The Cards dodged two bullets last night.
  2. I understand that the 20 win stat is like RBI's. A lot depends on other factors. But which would one rather have? A 15 game winner with a 2.75 ERA or a 20 game winner with ANY old ERA?
  3. Bombers, you picked some of the tamer quotes!
  4. Thanks for adding that sad fact. For today's entry I will first ask one of my favorite barroom trivia questions, guaranteed to win a round: Who was the first black HOF player to hit a home run in the American League? The obvious answer would have to be Larry Doby, but in 1947.... At Sportsman's Park, in his final big league AB pinch-hitter Willard Brown of the Browns becomes the first black player to a hit home run in the American League. The historic homer, an inside-the-park job off future Hall of Fame hurler Hal Newhouser, helps the Browns beat the Tigers, 6-5. Who was Willard Brown? Brown was picked up in the last weeks of the season after being spotted by a Browns scout at a KC Monarch's game . The 32 year old Willard must have had one helluva game as he was picked over several younger and better players to integrate the Browns. But his play was unremarkable and he was benched. Not expecting to play, Brown didn't bring his bats to the season finale and had to borrow one. He returned to the Negro Leagues, where he knocked around for 3 more years. It was on the strength of that single AB that a committy headed by Buck O'Neil got him enshrined in the HOF. Larry Doby hit a ton of homers in his long career, but none in his '47 rookie year.
  5. ...and bullpen support; the Brewers have to stay in the lead the rest of the way for him to get the 'W.' Absolutely.
  6. It's hard to win 20. HOF'er Don Drysdale only did it twice. Chris Carpenter: once. Fernando Valenzuela: never. It will come down to RUN SUPPORT. If Peralta gets it, he can do it.
  7. 2010.... Milwaukee's Casey McGehee's last hit, a seventh-inning single, during his 4-for-4 performance in the team's 8-4 victory over Arizona at Miller Park establishes a franchise record. The Brewer infielder's ninth consecutive hit breaks the club mark set by Braun in 2008, but is three shy of the major league record of 12 accomplished by Pinky Higgins (1938) and Walt Dropo (1952). 1984....Is it Kirk Douglas' voice heard at the start of this amusing video of an ugly moment?
  8. I was following on the radio and didn't understand exactly what he did. I guess our announcer tried to downplay it. Pretty bush, and how could anyone get away with a "sell" so obvious with all the cameras and replays used now?
  9. The Pirates finally placed Mc Cutchen on the 15 day DL. Josh Harrison has taken up the slack and has now hit safely in 12 consecutive games while his batting average is now up to .314 for the year, his highest since June 18. http://sports.cbsimg.net/images/visual/whatshot/MLB-rumors-injuries-news-updates-Andrew-McCutchen-081014.jpg Molina's cast came off but is still looking at another month. It's thought that Brandon Phillips will return from the identical injury in 2 to 3 weeks. LA's SS HRam is on the DL with an oblique.
  10. That's a pretty sour note for the Braves, with the Reds breathing down their necks, only a half game back in the WC and playing two last place teams while Atlanta faces two division leaders. Good chance they catch the Bucs as well.
  11. 1982.... Tagged with the loss in the Twins' 6-3 defeat to California‚ Terry Felton's career record drops to 0-14. The 24-year old right hander, who will not win a game in 55 major league appearances, establishes a new mark for the worst individual start in baseball history, surpassing Guy Morton's 1914 record of 13 consecutive losses from the beginning of a career. Terry had a very respectable 7.5 K's per 9 rate to go with his 6 BB per 9. In his last ever start in his 0-16 career the Twins had an early 7-1 lead against the Royals, Felton left the game with the Twins still ahead, Ron Davis came in and blew everything up. The final score: Kansas City 18, Minnesota 7. Davis’ response to a reporter after the game was over: “Drop dead”....his final baseball quote. After baseball he became the night supervisor on the East Baton Rouge P.D. and happily served as the sniper for the S.W.A.T. team. (no joke)
  12. The Reds and Pirates have an opportunity to make up some ground this weekend, playing the Fish and the Friars while the Brewers and Cards slug it out with 1st place Baltimore and LA. The Dodgers have really hit their stride of late, playing very good ball. The O's are also pulling away from the pack. The country will get their first look at Cubs rookie, the red hot Javier Baez on WGN this afternoon when they host the Rays at Wrigley.
  13. If the Brewers hold on and win it's likely they will go to bed with the 1.5 game lead as thunderstorms are predicted in St. Louis from 8:PM to 5:AM Could pose a problem in Sept. as the Red Sox aren't visiting again anytime soon.
  14. There's a lot of that going around. And welcome Blood.
  15. He's still throwing pretty hard. But RR is yanking.
  16. I don't even know what his function on that team IS, or how an organization could swallow the La Russa Kool-aid the media has been force feeding the public from the day he "invented" the closer role.
  17. 1950.... Three white players of the Chicago American Giants are barred by police from participating in a Negro American League doubleheader against the Birmingham Black Barons. I wonder if they had cops outside of the ballpark yanking the white folks out of line as well. http://www.birminghamprosports.com/birminghamblackbarons/picture06.jpg
  18. What I can't understand is why they let their best two pitchers get away when the offense is starting to shape up? What am I missing?
  19. Discussing the drilling of Pirates' McCutchen, team exec La Russa denied that the drilling was intentional and in the next breath pointed out that the Bucs lead the league in HBP. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24647143/video-diamondbacks-retaliate-for-accidental-hbp The Reds have caught the scuffling Braves in the wild card race. Their losing streak has reached eight. The Nats are pulling away, 4 games up in the East.
  20. I'm getting to watch your game in snatches as the Red Sox@Cards is on a rain delay. It's always bad luck when the Cards are on ESPN. The Reds are clobbering the Tribe again, and the Pirates are tied in the 7th.
  21. Fortunately for the opposition, Matheny insists on on keeping Rosenthal as the closer in spite of the fact that he routinely gets in trouble starting the 9th after Neshek just mows 'em down in the 8th or earlier. And when the writers beat Rosie down and Pat gets the job, HE will be kept as the closer too long and the cycle begins anew. The Eckersly, Isringhausen and Ryan Franklin syndrome is alive and well.
