  1. All you can do is laugh at this point. The big 3 I was so excited to see didn't even make it one game. Now maybe it's time to tank and see if we can draft a PG.
  2. Cleveland looks to be pretty done on draft picks that can be traded until 2021. Their roster contains no one I would want and/or could obtain.
  3. The problem was he was the guy that put the rat in the wall in the first place. That gif of the guy perpetually cleaning up after himself has never been more accurate. Yes, the Charlotte trade was amazing. Im assuming they are tanking for the next two drafts and we benefited from that. I just wish we were that team that took on a bad contract with a first round pick attached down the road rather than signing the bad contract that needs to be immediately dumped in the first place.
  4. Davies is the only guy Id even consider, though Arcia might become one after 2017. With WAR becoming such a key stat when it comes to value, none of our current MLB guys are the types that will be big WAR types, so there is no point in spending big money on an extension to buy out the arby years.
  5. Youd think they'd get creative and trade for future picks, even if it is 4-5 years. We sort of did that with the guard from the clippers when we took on his contract, then immediately traded the pick away for that back up PG. We could also pick up a bad contract along with a pick but we'd rather trade for that bad contract on our own. So much facepalm.
  6. While Id love to get rid of those contracts, the last thing we need is another guy who cant shoot. I have read that LeBron wishes they still had Delly. I wish we would just trade him for future draft picks and be done with it. We are one of those teams that rarely trade for picks, we are always trading for contracts with older guys that we need to dump a year later.
  7. To think we could have had a high lottery pick for him. I supported Kidds ability to judge MCW at the time, but its clear he has no idea what he is doing judging talent.
  8. I wouldnt doubt that these guys are still taking something. The technology is always advancing and the money is too big to not try and get an edge. As they say, follow the money.
  9. We tend to not know the man behind the stats. I have no knowledge of Butler but logic says if the Rockies dont want him there is more to the story. Exhibit Brett Lawrie
  10. Agreed. This is a major deal. Id suspect the Cardinals will lose their first round pick at the very least and the Astros will get it and/or their pool money.
  11. If Scooter can become a super sub that would be great. He isnt much of a player though as a starting 2B if we were trying to contend. He is a 92 OPS+ guy who somehow struck out 114 times last year. We have heard forever that he could only play 2B though, so where is this new found capability coming from? IF, and its a big IF, Villar can handle 2B on D, he is a significantly better player overall. I dont think either guy is an option for 3B though, so I guess thats why Stearns picked up Shaw, though he isnt much either.
  12. This team is really lucky both Giannis and Jabari made the leap to the next level stardom because their other moves have been borderline insane. Those big contracts will be a real problem for this team. It will be up to Kidd to find roles for these guys that highlight what little they are good at and still allow our big 3 (once Middleton comes back) to do their thing. Im hoping they dont do anything at the deadline to trade away a pick to bring in a vet.
  13. One thing that I would do is invest the money in the low minors to developing 2-3 knuckleball pitchers. A guy who could eat innings like that would be gold. Those guys are rare, but could that be because no one really invested in developing that position as a position in itself, as opposed to a pitcher per se? Sort of like how the soccer style kicker changed the FG in the 70's and 80's.
  14. They sort of have this in the lower minors with the piggy back system. One thing is the players union would never go for it because the starting pitcher is such a premium paying position. This would essentially pay most everyone like a reliever except for the rare elite guys.
  15. With the benefit of all the information (that Braun hid from them), it was a silly extension to be sure. In fairness to the Brewers, they thought they had locked up their franchise player at what would end up to be a bargain price when it was all added up. Im sure Mark A is twitching with anger every time he sends Braun a check these days, but what can you do? He is too good to dump but not good enough to carry the Brewers to anything meaningful, nor to another team and generate a decent return when factoring in his dead cost at the back end of the deal.
  16. Games they win in first half of the year are games they dont need to win the 2nd half of the year.
  17. At this point, the best bet is to see what happens in spring and if a contender on his trade list needs a bat. Braun doesn't appear to be going anywhere based on the contract. The HoF votes also show that people are not "over" the PED issues.
  18. Braun's contract is really a problem. Teams are looking it as a two year, $76M contract essentially. As we mentioned yesterday, the projections for just 2017 look to be way down for Braun in the baseball world, let alone 2019.
  19. Fangraphs isnt very impressed with Braun for 2017. Suggests a 2.0 WAR, which is a major drop. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3410&position=OF
  20. For what its worth, Fangraphs has Thames as our best player (at 2.5War) overall. http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=23 I find that surprising, Id guess Braun and Arcia would be our two best but I guess both of their D's were somewhat underwhelming. Braun is obvious on D, but Arcia has been projected to be a GG SS for a long time, so maybe his time up was an anomaly? Catcher isnt really a toss up to start, its more of a soft platoon/hot hand kind of thing. We don't have a 130 game catcher on the roster, they are both nice back up types. CF is just a place holder until Brinson is ready.
  21. My thoughts, for what it's worth: Villar: .730 OPS, 1 WAR No. He isn't much of a fielder but playing at 2B should help vs his horrible numbers at 3B. He is a quality if not borderline elite lead off man, so 1 WAR seems nuts. Broxton: .682 OPS, 1 WAR. Maybe, the guy is all over the place from brutal to white hot. Braun: .837 OPS, 1.9 WAR. He would have to be hurt much of the year, so it's possible I guess Thames: .626 OPS, -1.8 WAR. Just a silly signing. Classic Stearns where he tries to get cute instead of taking a quality guy, but -1.8 suggests Yuni bad. I can't see that. Shaw: .741 OPS, 1.1 WAR. Seems spot on. Susac: .707 OPS, 0.9 WAR. Again seems pretty viable. He is a quality back up catcher but as a starter, replacement level seems appropriate Arcia: .666 OPS, 0.3 WAR this would be a disaster. I think he will turn out to be nice defensive SS who will be meh on offense but should steal some bases. This War suggests he won't play much and I think he will play a lot. Santana: .787 OPS, 0.9 WAR. Seeing how WAR really values corner OF D this is possible. I do think he will be a 800 to 850 OPS guy.
  22. They snagged a once useful lefty starter at a bargain price. Nothing wrong with that.
  23. Pretty solid back up catcher. Little bit of power, great arm. Maldy was just a decent back up himself and Gagnon didnt seem like the was going to become anything super special. What about Wily? He came on a bit late in the year and he is one of our very few pitchers that could be a #2 type.
  24. No one wants to hear the answer but it starts with the letter T. Thats the most direct way to land one via the draft and associated bonus pool $$$$. Other than that, get lucky with some trades for prospects and hope one pans out to be a plus plus guy.
  25. Yes, players traded mid season can not receive a QO for draft pick purposes.
