  1. Yea, simply because you could improve in other areas quite easily. Cain bounceback, Yelich doesn't get hurt, Hiura up all year, etc. Woodruff healthy all year, Burnes corrected, Knebel healthy, etc.
  2. Running through PSU schedules I see a whole bunch of road losses to good teams. And, losses to NW, Temple, Pitt. Several losses to MSU, which apparently is supposed to be easy. Frankly not sure how he has a job haha. Bunch of bowl losses, even though their opponents probably didn't care. In all seriousness, I have a friend who went to PSU so I at least get some takes from a diehard. I remember he and his boys all wanted Franklin gone in the 2015/16 timeframe. They lost to Pitt, then barely beat Temple, then got destroyed by Mich in early 2016. He wanted him gone after that game. Then everything clicked for McSorley and they went on to beat us in the B1G title game that year. Now, he's loved there and basically entrenched for years. What a difference a couple years make, overall I think he's a great coach. What he did to save himself was give up control of the O, he brought in Joe Moorhead and gave him control in 2016 and that's when it all turned around. So, yea he's probably not the Xs and Os guru type guy but overall a good coach. Good leader, recruiter, PR, etc and that's all important to the job. Also, made me remember that 52-49 Rose Bowl loss to USC they had. Remember how awesome that game was? One of the most entertaining games I've ever seen.
  3. Thing is I think they do have the personnel and he did do it in the past. I agree though he has not since he's been back now. Though I agree of course not as much as teams with true elite speed WRs. But with the attention our run game should garner I don't see how you can't put a few up in play action. Previous years I chalked up to Horni have no arm strength, so I get it. But Cephus can beat people deep and I don't see why Taylor and Prior can't either. Davis probably seems more like a possession guy. They threw plenty of deep balls with Abbrederis and Erickson type guys in the past. Stave was just an OK QB and they threw tons of deep balls, though I do know that was post PC. I suppose my best guess now is that since PC has been back (take out 2018 for all discussion, such a weird year) the D has been so good that he's just playing ball control low risk on O. And maybe he's not calling plays, they don't tell us. But, I think with having good WRs now and seemingly a solid at least Tolzien level type QB I'd agree it's time to start trying to be more aggressive. Although as said the OLine is not on par with those teams of the past. I just keep thinking combine 2010-11 O with our current level of D (take out 2018) and you could make some serious noise.
  4. Well, Mich plays ND this week. So a very tough game and probably a 50/50 game. App ST I'd assume plays an easy W. So, next week that very well could happen.
  5. Maybe when they have an OL that can actually pass block against solid defensive fronts - to throw deep consistently you need more than 2 seconds' time on passing downs for before 2-3 lineman are collapsing the pocket. Despite their supposed pedigree, the Badgers' Oline over the past couple seasons has been severely overrated, IMO. Any success they've had passing comes off play action against teams selling out on the run - whenever they get into sets where multiple receivers could potentially get into deep routes, their O Line needs help to keep the QB off his back. I'm not sure on Coan's arm strength, either. Another big part of it is how their offense is structured, too - I've wondered for quite awhile why Badger QBs are more of the traditional 1980's statues in the pocket, when having a better athlete to run offensive sets where the QB is a running threat could really add another dimension to both the run and pass game. Russel Wilson was great at eluding defenders while making time for throws or some scrambling yards, but he wasn't utilized in many read option sets unless they were at the goal line. Having a QB that can take a snap from the pistol and be able to give it to Taylor, fake and run it himself, or fire it out to the perimeter to receivers going against DB's on islands while the opponent is loading the box seems like a no-brainer advantage they just have never had the personnel to try and exploit. Agree with pretty much the whole post. But especially the OL comments.
  6. Coan has a whole high school reel of doing it too. He hit multiple bombs in one of the cupcake games and I think one or two vs MSU too. He has the arm strength for it, I think that's clear. He's able to zing everything sideline to sideline without it floating like Horni. Which obviously helps right there. But you have WRs who can stretch it, I agree, you need to go over the top more. I'd say my biggest nitpick on Xs and Os is the lack of play action, which should obviously include bombs like Stave threw a ton of. IMO a deep ball is much easier if the D doesn't have 6 DBs in and two deep safeties. You have this power running game that garners tons of respect from the D, yet you don't pass off it to take advantage. You basically only throw out of shotgun now. The standard play action boot of the last 20 years that gets easy 10-15 yds to TEs multiple times a game is gone the last couple years. Do a play action at the goal line and the TEs are probably uncovered for easy TDs. That's where I get to questioning if PC is calling plays or what, this stuff was standard for him in his previous stints here and now it's gone. That along with the OL just not being as dominant as it was prior to 2014ish. My armchair coach tweak would be to push Rudolph to a new job, hopefully he can get a HC job at a MAC school. Bostad back to OL and PC is OC/HC. Saves you ton of money too in what they're paying Rudolph to give Jimmy a raise.
  7. LSU finished that year ranked 13th. Get the W vs us and they're top 10. But, since they lost to us they're not top 10 so it doesn't count. Again, if you just "yea, but" everything you're eventually only going to get to the negative. First, not good until you win big road games. Beat Iowa, MSU Neb types a bunch: Yea but you don't beat big programs with elite speed. Beat LSU Auburn USC MIA and usually hang within 1 score to OSU. Yea but you now need to play those game on the road at their stadium and they have to win all the other games they play or it doesn't count. Plus, if they had lost the game prior to you that means they now don't care so that doesn't count either. Now for an example this year (and by no means am I predicting) they win at OSU then beat PSU in the title game. but get smashed by Bama in the playoffs. Then it's yea but you can't win it all anyway and they're not really legit or good enough. Or say we beat OSU in the next couple years at home, then it's yea but you didn't do it on the road. With that kind of selectivism and narrowing your criteria until you're down to only the Ls you're only going to have a negative view. You're grasping for a way to discard any good thing to only focus on the negative. Bottom line, they're never going to be OSU. Stomping our feet and pouting and demanding new coaches because they're not is just futile. They're going to be on the 2nd-3rd tier of teams, that's it and we might as well accept it. Sometimes you're going to get the stars aligned and pull out the great year, most years you won't. Should we hold them to higher standard than what Iowa is holding Ferentz to, yes absolutely. But firing guys because they're not OSU isn't right either. And you saw my criticism on the O as a major critique that I have questions on too. So it's not like I'm sitting here with some homer glasses on. There is clear areas they can improve there and it's feasible to do it (wouldn't take some drastic change to recruiting/academics since it was being done just a few years ago). Something should be tweaked on the O side of the ball to get back to that level.
  8. Agree with Plush there. Don't forget Braun getting a chunk of ABs tehre. But yea you have the whole offseason to get a guy to fill that role. I think they should target a 1B/3B combo guy as a backup.
  9. Sooo LSU doesn't count being a top 5 program and a clear dog to them. Then yea sure we can win games, but only if the other team doesn't care, OK. You're basically going into this hindsight looking with the mindset that any game that we won there is an excuse for and doesn't count as a big win (since the team we beat can't be that good since we beat them, chicken/egg type thing). This comes back to that article posted on the main page with the "It always end in a loss" type of thing. Thinking like this will always leave you disappointed and negative.
  10. So you found a way to not count other tough and good wins in order to point out the losses. It's fine but it is what it is in a nothing will ever be good enough other than Ringz and finding the negatives type attitude. Then down the line if they do get a couple of those and make a playoff, but lose (as they should vs Bama types) then someone will say whoopdie do, not like we can beat the big boys to win it all. not saying you would, but someone will. The ESPNification of everyone's thinking to "Ringzz or bust" has a negative trickle down effect. We'll never be OSU, really just have to accept that at UW or might as well just not follow. Also, they would've been underdogs in several of the games I listed.
  11. While embarrassing loss, you guys are massively overreacting here. Upsets happen all year in CFB, coaches don't get fired for it. He has the highest win % in school history. 4 days ago this is the best team we've ever had, or at least since RW. Which I still think is true today. Lose a game, hot seat. They crapped the bed, no doubt, but it happens. Wonder if Clemson regrets not canning Dabo for all those "Clemsoning" losses prior to 2016ish. OSU has had a game like this almost every year for years, though I don't see it this time. I think they're winning it all. Badgers are always a 9-3 Pinstripe Bowl team? Really? A game they've been to one time? Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl the previous two seasons. 13 wins the season before. They play a "NY Day" bowl almost every year (I know not always on NYD anymore due to schedule changes but you know what I mean on that level). Now lets also remember there is only 2 seniors on the two-deep on D right now. This is set up by the clear uptick in recruiting the last few years and the D is set up to be very good for years to come. The biggest thing to be concerned about IMO, and I said this on here in the offseason, is that the O still hasn't gotten up to close to the level it was when PC left in 2012ish. While better this year since we have a good QB. I'd have thought after 5 years we'd be back to just dominating on O like they did from 2009-13ish. The post RW teams didn't have a QB and still could just roll over people running the ball against 9 man fronts. Do we need Bostad back as OL coach instead of LBs? Who is calling the plays? They don't tell us. If PC isn't calling plays he needs to get back to it. The offenses at Pitt scored tons of points. What's taking so long for it to come back here? Basically, if you had the offenses from PCs last run here combined with our current D system, they really could do some damage. For what Plush just put, you're discounting they've won every bowl game(including two big name programs in USC/Miami). You're not counting beating LSU. A few at Iowa wins, at Nebraska wins.
  12. There's probably some probability calculator you can punch in teh scenario. But I'd guess it was closer to 66% for GB in the formulas. Then when you factor in that the Det offense had gained like 50 yards in 3 quarters you could probably tweak it up too
  13. Good luck. We just dealt with a similar "this guy could be the guy who does it" employee situation. Thankfully he left on his own before we had to fire, so we didn't have that confrontation to deal with. Still, those few days leading up to him leaving and turning his keys everyone was on edge. Some people took days off, each day I came in late and spent a lot of time away from the office/desk to avoid the possibility. Multiple people asked for extra security. Multiple told their bosses they'd be suing the company if it happened. Things like that. People were legit afraid, thankfully nothing happened and all should be good now, but it's kind of just sad that is in the back of everyone's mind these days.
  14. I agree that trade is far off. Turner is still good, he's not an albatross contract that we're gaining value by taking it on. Really I don't see how the Dodgers can fit in Rendon or why they feel they need it. Only logic would be if Turner is moved this year if he he only has 1 year left, there just isn't enough spots to play all these guys. But really they should be focused elsewhere since Turner is still good for now. They need relief help and have to start planning on the Buehler contract, Bellinger contract, Seager decision on his contract, etc. They should be planning money for them. But count me in on going for Turner if he's made available.
  15. I'd just add we should remember this isn't at all like 2017 with a cupcake schedule. UW (and for that matter OSU and PSU too) will have played a very strong schedule by the end of the year. ETA: Plus so far UW is slaughtering their schedule. In 2017 that wasn't the case
  16. If ya'll haven't seen this yet. Meyer breaking down some UW passing game things from last wee. BTW Urban is really good on TV and as an analyst. I know they won't take a college guy and do this but I'd take him all day over Booger on MNF.
  17. I'm sure that's true and all. But again, comparing it to what was before him and what he played against at the time and he blew it all out of the water. I'd guess you could have a discussion too that what he did changed how defenses need to be played which has led to the evolution to now? There is a section on Wiki about how he changed the way the game was played on offense in regards to passing and team play. I guess I'm saying you could probably just as easily make an argument that how defenses have evolved is a testament to how ridiculous he was. Fully acknowledge I'm not a hockey guy though, just having a discussion.
  18. I believe he won 4 straight early in his career with Edmonton and those teams were considered some of the best ever. Then got traded and never won another, I think did make it to the Finals a few times though. Not being a hockey guy, I'd assume the trade to LA gutted their whole team around him. Several quick tidbits interesting on Wiki. First: Gretzky is the leading scorer in NHL history, with more goals and assists than any other player. He garnered more assists than any other player scored total points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times. Between 1982 and 1985, the Edmonton Oilers averaged 423 goals a season, when no previous team had scored 400, and Gretzky on his own had averaged 207 points, when no player before had scored more than 152 in one year. Besides that, they changed the penalty rules because he was too good: In June 1985, as part of a package of five rule changes to be implemented for the 1985–86 season, the NHL Board of Governors decided to introduce offsetting penalties, where neither team lost a man when coincidental penalties were called. The effect of calling offsetting penalties was felt immediately in the NHL, because during the early 1980s, when the Gretzky-era Oilers entered a four-on-four or three-on-three situation with an opponent, they frequently used the space on the ice to score one or more goals. Gretzky held a press conference one day after being awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy, criticizing the NHL for punishing teams and players who previously benefited. The rule change became known as the "Gretzky rule". That is the opposite of what the NBA did for Jordan in changing the rules to help him.
  19. Interesting and creative idea. But I think Plush's take more or less nails it. you're essentially swapping Story/Hiura's production and hole at the other spot but one is cheap and controlled for like 6 more years in exchange for a ton of salary and some pitching, but not any pitching that is going to make anyone too excited. Good effort but I don't think quite right in order to give up such a near lock to be a massive hitter on the cheap like Hiura.
  20. Exactly, thanks. I'm no hockey expert and i'm sure you're correct in pointing out differences to now. But, for the 20ish years he played the guys he was up against played by the same rules and against the same comp and look at how ridiculous the numbers are. As you say, it's almost video game level of absurd.
  21. Well that's not how I meant it, sorry if not clear. The way the original person said Tatis wasn't a good comp because he had played in MLB. I pointed out the next person meant "prior to 2019" when Tatis had not yet played. So I was saying it was a good comparison because basically both haven't played at MLB. I know Lux did, I'm saying 20 games is as good as not playing in my mind and that sample has next to no value imo. Essentially I was saying pre 2019 Tatis is comparable situation to pre 2020 Lux and that OP wasn't trying to compare post 2019 on both guys. Man, hope I didn't misinterpret way at the beginning of this and the original was actually talking about Lux, lol. ETA: quick reread it does seem I interpreted correctly, just wasn't clear what I meant.
  22. I can't wait. If we can see it with multiple zoomed in slow down close up cameras I think it's unbelievable a ref can't see it from 15 yards away in full speed motion while having to make a split second choice, you know and look at other things too. UNACCEPTABLE!! Note, this is basically exactly what Booger said, but without the sarcasm.
  23. Couldn't find exact data for what you're talking in a few seconds of looking. But, on average teams score on 54% of plays from the 1, GB would've had 4 swings at a 54% chance. Obviously that's going to end up in a very high % of success. That's all that he was saying, and in general GB is an above average offense. Sure, there is a non 0 % chance of failure but your chances are as close to lock as you can get in football.
  24. You're right they didn't go 7 in the Finals. But that Knicks team you speak of took them to 7 prior the Finals and took them 6 another time. They also had to go 7 vs Indiana in the 2nd 3 pete. And it seems like almost all of the Finals went 6. On paper I'd agree they should've won all 8, but I'm just saying we don't know the trickle down effect if he hadn't quit. What other moves are made by other teams, if their internal tensions/pressure break them up, do they swap out roles players from team 1 for the guys in team 2, do they add all those guys to the team in 96 to make those last 3 years almost unbeatable? Things like that. Remember part of the discussion on him quitting was just being burned out by it all, that break might've been the best thing for his mind and body. That's why I'd put my money on No, just due to so many variables. But of course I wouldn't be surprised at all if they had done it or would I be stomping my feet saying 'no way' or anything like that
  25. I'd certainly try for another piece in the negotiation. I think you can make enough of an argument to make a strong case for at least some kind of sweetener. But, if push came to shove I cave and do it straight up. Everyday SS is just so much more valuable than a RP imo. For the Tatis comparison. The poster meant if it was done prior to 2019, at which point Tatis hadn't played at all yet in MLB. So it's actually a good comp. I'd have ranked Tatis higher and more of a lock than Lux, but you'd also have been giving up one more year of control on Hader. Also, I wouldn't put much stock in Lux's stats in 20 games since he came up as a 21 year old. He should be in that near lock to be a good high quality player. Will he blow up to say Bregman/Correa type? who knows, but seems barring injury his flop % is very very low at this point.
