  1. With those innings totals you'd think the plan is to give him a shot at the rotation initially and move to pen if it doesn't work out. Anyone have info on velocity and arsenal?
  2. Well, for a comp and in a virtual best case scenario he would pitch like Scherzer leading up to this opt out at 35ish. Do we think Scherzer would beat 4/144 if he was a FA right now? Three months ago I would've said No, now I'm not so sure after these two deals hit the market.
  3. Fine idea and all. But not sure if your phrasing of that as the easy solution is all that accurate haha.
  4. That goes without saying, and thus why I said "chances are". This is a message board, we're speculating.
  5. I'd have done this without thinking twice since it's a one year deal. Chances are to come here he'd have needed a few mil more to make up for location and not a familiar manager in Girardi. Then it gets questionable if the 14 turns into 18-20.
  6. That's actually my favorite aspect of it, that there is a real value if you go undefeated. It's very rare to have 3 from major conferences go undefeated like happened this. Keeping the regular season value.
  7. 1 year deal I think I'd have been seriously interested. But, not unlike Wheeler location could be a big factor for him in someplace close to NY
  8. That's where the 6 could come in, just make it clear too. 5 champs and 1 WC. Another thing that could happen down the line though, especially with the new financials stuff coming in with paying players combined with the health risk so few people playing, would be the Major conferences to separate from the rest with their own rules. A scenario could come up where it becomes 4 conferences, presumably the B12 getting poached, and 48 total teams. So essentially you'd have the conf title games as the "round of 8", then it goes to the way it is now for the final after the 4 conf champs are decided.
  9. The most likely scenario IMO that an 8 could pull it off (win all 3 for the title, not just one upset) is if a team is seeded low due to a QB injury but then the QB is healthy for the playoff. Or yea if an elite team like BAma takes an extra L during the season for who knows what reason and gets seeded low. At some point it will happen, I agree. IMO I'd rather not have that be possible and keep rewarding teams for elite regular seasons. But looking at Snappers points from UWs perspective he's right. Our best chance at a title is 4 teams and getting in due to winning the B1G with 1 loss or less and only having to win 2 games instead of 3. I made a similar point when BB left to Arkansas to 'win titles' since he said you needed to be in the SEC. IMO it was easier at UW as you could put together a cake schedule, pull of the B1G title game and boom you're in the Championship (this was when there was 2 teams). Instead he chose to play Bama, Auburn and LSU every year just to even get to his conf title game. Obviously that increased even more when it went to 4 as now it's almost impossible not be included as a 1 loss B1G Champ, but he didn't know that was coming. I mean, if he himself as the Special Teams coach knew hot prevent punt blocks they probably win the title in 2011.
  10. Exactly. The talent in the NBA has gotten so good and the rules tweaked so much in the offenses favor that you simply have to pick your poison as best as possible. That's exactly what the Bucks do. Basically they only lose if the other team has a huge outlier game from 3 where they get ridiculous hot. Their logic on D is that won't happen 4 times in a 7 game series. And they were right, Tor didn't do that. They lost because their O got shut down. And even with the O getting shut down if FVV doesn't slop in about 5 more 3s than he should've they would've won it all.
  11. Snapper pretty much nails it there. I'll add to it that it's really about preferences, do you want to find out who the best team is or have the most entertaining tournament? I'd easily argue the CFB systems typically shoot among the highest % of the best team actually winning, probably number 2 after NBA. But, it's not nearly as entertaining as a 64 team tournament in basketball due to it just being smaller. They've essentially eliminated a ton of the variance. I actually like it this way. I think it would be BS for a team to go undefeated and have to play a 3 loss team and then lose on something fluky or have their QB get hurt in that game which costs them the title. They already proved they were the best team all year, but are being forced to do it again. I also think it's BS when it happens in the Bball tourney, but of course I'm greatly entertained by it. And I also dislike the notion that all games that aren't for the overall championship in any sport are pointless, I hate that the ESPN Ringz obsession has seeped that far into everyone at this point. Kind of what Homer is getting at too. There is a pride in making it as far as you can and accomplishment in it. Winning conferences, beating rivals, beating similar level competition from another conference, etc.
  12. But who knows what else Dayne gets from booster groups and things of that nature too or any other way the school funnels him money. Dayne also has a terrible personality for commercials, Taylor on the other hand is the exact opposite and would be great at it and could cash in off added name recognition of the record with that. Look at Baker Mayfield right now. But yea when adding in the injury factor it just makes no sense to risk it. Yea who knows maybe(still doubt it does) in 40 years of earning small amounts on his name it balances for 1 year of NFL checks, but no way to eliminate the injury risk. For the Heisman, like I said it would be like a career accomplishment type one. Puts up another 2K+ next year while team goes at least 10-2. No QB has a bananas year and all of a sudden he wins. Fields and Lawrence will be back though so obviously the odds are low but it's feasible in kind of a how the heck don't we give it to the guy with over 8K career yards. Both Dayne and Williams got it for breaking the record. But of course that was 20 years ago before everyone realized how overrated RBs are. BTW still a joke Gordon didn't get the Heisman for his 2600 yd season, 2nd best RB season ever. While two Bama RBs recently have gotten it with normal seasons.
  13. I'd actually say Taylor should be there over Young. Yes, Young is ridiculous and the best defensive player, but simply not playing 2 games should virtually eliminate him. That said, this comes down to the voting, this means all those guys beat Taylor in voting. They're not gonna have Taylor be there over guys who beat him in voting. So the people really at fault are the voters, not some Heisman committee or anything. As much as I know Taylor is going pro and financially he has to. I'd be curious the long term life and money implications of coming back and setting that record, one that is very unlikely to get beat. One could probably make an argument the lifelong implications of that, and possibly getting the career achievement type Heisman next year could outweigh the one year of earning NFL money. But, that's as long as he doesn't get hurt. For example, down the line he could probably get paid a chunk of money by UW each year to kind of be an ambassador for the program. Going around to all the events, glad handing, fund raising etc. I'm not positive, but I think Dayne is on the payroll now in a similar capacity.
  14. And the Chryst has to go crowd from two months ago. In 5 years he's won 10+ 4 times. Made the Rose, Cotton, and Orange Bowls. Having won the first two. Won division 3/5 years. Realistic areas to improve being I think 4/5 years is an attainable goal for winning the West. And of course pull of a win vs OSU at some point and winning the conference. But still at least they gave OSU a legit game this weekend. To me that's all I want vs OSU, play them close and have a chance almost every time you play and eventually you'll catch a few breaks and win like 1/6 times. Or I mean if you really want to get whiny, Fields shouldn't be playing at OSU right now so then all of a sudden you might've got this championship. Obviously they're still OSU so it's not a freebie, but you go from huge dogs to even or small dogs without Fields (their backups have transferred so would've had a huge question mark if he was ruled ineligible). Or maybe you're playing PSU instead. But of course we can't get a kid who sat out the whole year last year to be eligible in basketball.
  15. Well they finally looked at Bama's resume which has essentially no good wins on it. But yea I agree it's an overreaction. We all know they'd only be underdogs to the top 3 teams, and if Tua is healthy that might not even be true. I actually like the 6 team option better than 8. I think 8 waters it down too much and opens up 3 loss teams. But most importantly, I like that it would give the top 2 teams a bye in that it will keep the emphasis on being undefeated and how every game is so huge, which is what make CFB great now. Team would still have a massive care and emphasis on being top 2 for that bye so that, as an example, that SEC title game mattered last weekend. Sure would've been rough on the committee this year picking who doesn't get the bye though. But, imagine this year's scenario with the old system of picking just two? At least that problem is gone.
  16. I mean they have to be at least talking to anyone not named Cole, Stras, Rendon. No harm in feeling people out and putting in your best offer even if you know it's unlikely they take it. Say we gave like 4/70 and that's it. Or maybe see if he has interest in some kind of creative option stuff and be the team that explores that with people. If he declines and takes a bigger one so be it, on to the next.
  17. Yea that tweet with that many teams bidding seems like the price will get out of the range that I was talking on my original mention a few days ago at which point I'm out. I was assuming all the collusion would keep the price down, haha.
  18. Post I had about this in the Wheeler thread, of course I'm out if you're paying any kind of big contract: I'd agree with many that think Dallas seems like the most likely fit in terms of level and contract. But, when someone posted that big list earlier today it got me to thinking Bumgarner might not get anywhere near the deal his 'name' would command and actually end up in the same reasonably priced 3-4 year deal we're thinking on Dallas. I know many here hate him and I fully realize he's nowhere near what he was, but if the cost isn't near what we fear I'd be OK with it. I wanna say he's originally from the NC mountainy type area initially. If not for what ATL just spent on Hamels they could've made sense for him. Cinncy probably isn't too far either to match him up with our old boy, obviously Cincy seems to be all in.
  19. Well let's say you're right and OSU would be still slotted ahead of UW. Then it's OSU, SEC Champ, Clemson as locks. Then debate comes between 1 loss UW B1G Champ vs 1 loss Utah, 1 loss B12 champ, and vs either two loss UGA or 1 loss LSU. The only situation there that would be a problem is if LSU were to lose to UGA. We're in over B12 and Pac10 and I don't think that's debatable. If LSU beats UGA we'd be in over UGA, no doubt. 1 loss LSU vs 1 loss UW I think is a toss up. That would be the only situation we'd be in trouble. Generally speaking if UW has 1 loss and wins the B1G Title game they're almost always going to make the playoff, probably 95% of the time if not higher. You'd need some serious things working against you and bad luck to not. I'd still think they turn it into an OSU/LSU debate and use our Conf Title to have us in already especially since we just beat one heads up, but just discussing hypotheticals which is one of the fun things of CFB
  20. Generally I'd agree. But TB is a different type of team. First, the money owed to Snell is big for them and they're always looking to cut. Second, they're the other team besides us that is all about the creative bullpen usage and being creative. Thus devaluing starting pitching to a degree and also putting greater value on a possible multi inning machine like Hader. So yes I agree with your premise but I do think TB, if anyone, would be the ones to break from it.
  21. I think Arenado is simply impossible. But your overall notion made me quickly look at teams and try to think of good signed players on crap teams and try to come up with someone. What I came up with is Starling Marte. 2 years and 22ish mil left on his deal. With Stearns mentioning Braun to 1B again it could make sense to add an OF and one who plays good D like him. Pitt is also a frequent trading partner for us and Marte isn't so good that he'll cost a ridiculous amount in prospects. Another Pitt option is Josh Bell. 6 mil for 2020 with 2 years of Arby left. Personally I'm a bit skeptical that his first half this year was a huge outlier. But even if that's true, he's still a solid player. Switch hitter and would benefit from our park. Also shouldn't cost a ridiculous amount in prospects (like Arenado would).
  22. Yea as he was playing it seemed like he was doing so well then you saw the stats and it didn't line up at all. I remember several times looking up the stats and thinking "man it sure seems like he's doing better than this". Seemed like he was doing something every game but the stats prove not. Still, he was a respectable depth guy to have as a just in case for injuries. Good luck to him.
  23. UW has no shot at the playoff IMO. For the scenario you mention where we're assuming ILL misses that kick at the end. I think it would go down that we're in over OSU if we would beat them tomorrow. L in OSU but beat them neutral field gives us the edge, then tack on the conference championship. We'd have a great schedule and resume that trumps the Pac 10 and Big 12 champs without question (Wins vs OSU, Mich, MN, Iowa, no bad losses). It would be SEC Champ, Clemson, UW. Then the debate comes in for the 4th spot between Utah if they win, Big 12 champ, OSU, LSU if they lose SEC. That would be an impossible decision to make but I'd have no doubt UW would be in that scenario. If I was guessing I think they'd screw over the Big 12 and Utah and pick between LSU/OSU. If I had to guess I'd say they pick OSU but who knows, like I said that would be a horrible spto for the committee to be in. Maybe they'd take the copout and put Utah in so they can say Conf Champ even though they all think/know OSU and LSU are better
  24. To add to the OSU motivation or things in their favor topic I think the most important difference from game 1 is the weather. I mean we did hang with them for 2.5 quarters and all but it was in an absolute monsoon. Their speed being able to be fully utilized in a dome instead of slowed by the rain is a huge difference for them and why I think we don't really have a chance. I'd be happy to be wrong. I just hope I'm not wrong in that we hand and lose by less than 15.
  25. I actually don't think Coan was the problem in game 1. him not having more than 1.5 seconds to throw and having no run game were the key things. There's more to FB than the QB. Sure, of course if you had a freak like Wilson he can dodge all those rushers and make something happen, but that's just not realistic. Yea I'm also fairly sure OSU wipes the floor with us. 17 gives me cause for concern on a bet but I do think OSU covers it. Probably going to look for a 1H line under 10 and load up on that to hedge a bit. With how leaky our D got in the 2nd half of the season I don't know how we stop them unless Fields goes down, and even then...
