  1. Kind of a hype article than something legitimate. Let’s not forget Knebel has had one good year in his entire career. He then had a pretty shaky year and then got injured. He showed some flashes last year, but relievers that ‘show flashes of brilliance’ might be the most common commodity in baseball. He is far from his days of being elite and again...that was one year. Article acts like he was Mariano Rivera on his way to a HOF career. I have no doubt he has some left in the tank, but his consistency and how good he will actually be is far from a sure thing.
  2. You can sugarcoat it any way you would like...but Graham Mertz has been straight up garbage for another game.
  3. Where is the cheap vacation...asking for a friend...
  4. Remember when Mertz was the next great thing...whoops!
  5. I don’t think anyone is worried about him being Justin Smoak. It’s the fact he could have an OPS in the .700-.750 range and basically be replacement level at 1B...which is probably not going to help us make the postseason. If he gets his OPS around .800 he can probably be a solid contributor...hopefully at DH, but I’m sure it would be fine at 1B considering our budget. I guess I can’t totally speak for his defense at 1B for an entire year, but eeessh...that could be rough even for an .800 OPS.
  6. Too soon to say what a team is or isn’t. You’d be surprised how weak some of the elite teams are this year. Wisconsin has a fairly solid team...maybe not a ton of difference making talent, but certainly a group that should play well as a team and be pretty productive.
  7. There is nothing enticing about Carlos Rodon. His closest thing to a full season was 165 innings a half decade ago. Lately his has been terrible or hurt. We can do better even on our budget.
  8. What do you think reality is? In his lone full season, 2019, he posted a 111 OPS+. Entering 2020 he was projected for a 121 OPS+. He posted a 98 OPS+ in 2020, but it was only 136 PAs, he was unlucky by xwOBA & his walk/K rates were steady so I don't see his projection going down too much for 2021, maybe to around a 115 OPS+. For reference, here are league average 1B/DH wRC+ the last three years... 1B | 2018: 108 | 2019 : 111 | 2020: 108 DH | 2018: 110 | 2019: 104 | 2020: 97 Depends...one big thing is how much he is facing LHP. The more he doesn't face LHP the more you will inflate his numbers to look good. He was absolutely atrocious against LHP in 2019 and in 2020 he only faced them 12 times. Which speaking of that I keep seeing his comparison to "league average". Are you really league average if you are a platoon player and are hanging around league average stats? Seems like that would actually be below average. The other thing is he doesn't really have much of a track record. His numbers in 2019 are only good because he posted a 1.195 OPS in April, outside of that his was a lot more human. In the second half of 2019 he barely posted a .600 OPS and obviously was off to a terrible start in 2020 before his hot streak. (He did hold his own in May/June/July of 2019...but merely average at best) Real streaky so far in his career, which despite a lot of seasons isn't a huge sample size of time outside of 2019.
  9. Is that a good thing? We did that with Sogard and the first time we did it he hit to the tune of a .406 OPS the next season. We were then dumb enough to fall for it again and he hit to the tune of a .560 OPS. Seems we were getting struck by that lightning more than catching it in a bottle. I think I have said it before, but he basically gives me Eric Thames vibes...but slightly worse of a player. He is going to go beastmode for about a month and then be below average to terrible most of the time.
  10. Sure, give me your brights, just prepare for my retina burning high beams back though.
  11. Arbitration contracts aren’t guaranteed. There are certain deadline days in spring training where some of the salary gets guaranteed. Automatically 30 days are guaranteed. 17th day of spring training 45 days are guaranteed, and then at break of camp it is fully guaranteed.
  12. But that's not at all what they're doing. They have "core" players in guys like Yelich, Hiura, Burnes, Cain, and Woodruff. We don't have the funds to fill the roster with star players, so we need other guys to fill out the roster. If we can get league average out of these guys without spending too much money, that's probably the best we can hope for. I'd love it if we had more players coming up from the farm to fill more holes, but we've been trading prospects to help the MLB team over the past few years. After a while that comes back and bites you. Without league minimum guys coming from the farm, you need to pay more for all the guys, including the "filler" players. We now have C, 1B, 2B, SS, LF, CF, RF covered, so hopefully by saving some money in the deals made yesterday, we can find another "core player," or at least an above average guy, to play 3B. Problem is one of those core players was horrendous last year (Hiura) and the other one probably got his AARP card in the mail while he didn't play this year. It would also help if Vogelbach was average...but he is really far from it. You hope his bat is average, but playing the field he is definitely not an average player. Don't even give get me started about RF and SS. Not sure if I would call the offseason a massive failure if we fill up the offense with similar garbage we had in 2020 because of the disastrous offseason/financials...but I could certainly see why someone would be unhappy with Vogelbach getting 500+ ABs next year...it probably is not a good sign to the overall offenses success.
  13. I hear what you're saying, but I just can't justify basing the difference between 3.5 WAR in 2017 and 0.4 WAR in 2018 just on HR/FB rate. Like adam, I remember the Knebel that finished strong at the end of 2018, but was so bad at one point that he was demoted to the minors a month before that. 0.00 ERA and a 18.2 K/9....completely bonkers in September 2018. Good times.
  14. Probably, we probably said the same about Neftali Feliz too. That type of comment is about as relevant as someone coming to spring training "in the best shape of their life".
  15. So the Dodgers notice adjustments that can be made, but Milwaukee didn't notice any adjustments? These kind of statements always bother me. This team can see things that they can do to improve a certain player, but the previous team wasn't able to see the same things... When does the new team not make a comment like this?
  16. Yah...good luck finding a team willing to trade for a 35 year old CFer, whose value largely comes from defense, costs $17mil, and is coming off a poor 2019 and/or 2020 vacation. If a team was willing to give us salary relief I doubt it is turned into something very useful. I doubt they would go drop $15mil per year on a major free agent in return. Most of it would probably go to reducing payroll.
  17. In his lone full season he posted a 111 wRC+ & 1.6 WAR. If he can approximate those numbers in 2021 it would be perfectly cromulent production for 1.4 million dollars. Sure, you could look at it that way. Maybe not the most accurate if you want to make the postseason though. We aren't going to get very far if we are loading up the roster with guys 'worth' their salary, but are 1.5 WAR (or worse) players and absolutely miserable defensively. I don't think Jack thinks the price is bad, but that the player isn't really that good...especially at 500+ ABs. You could make the most +value roster in MLB and win 60 games...is that what we want? Probably not.
  18. First thing to agree on, he is not versatile. He had a -1.5 WAR defensively in 2019. Just because someone plays more than one position does not make them versatile...at least not in a good way. He is the kind of dude who will have 30+ errors at 3B. That being said I would prefer this guy way more than Vogelbach as a DH and maybe even as a 1B.
  19. Paying $5mil gambling on a 7th inning reliever is probably not something the Brewers would want to do even if there wasn't a financial crunch with the payroll.
  20. They can trade Josh Hader whenever they want. Pretty sure he doesn’t need to complete the arbitration process first. It doesn’t take a lot of critical thinking by another team to figure out what he will cost. A simple search on MLBTR.com would be enough. Maybe I am wrong, but I’d think the arbitration process would just transfer to the new team.
  21. We will see how this plays out, but one of Narvaez, Pina, or Nottingham is still likely to go before the season. The only way to keep all three is optioning the most expensive of the bunch (Narvaez) and having two right handed catchers. That doesn’t make sense obviously and keeping all three on the MLB roster isn’t happening. I’d still expect a duo of Narvaez/Nottingham...I’d be pretty surprised if Stearns didn’t go with the younger catcher. Of course...maybe they think they can sneak Nottingham back to AAA. I would be a little surprised...but never know. One theory is to hold all three until the last second and then send Nottingham to AAA...not many teams will be wanting to claim a catcher right before the season starts.
  22. No better option, hopefully he can post at least a 0.1 WAR next year. It isn’t guaranteed so we have the ability to find something better this off-season still and can easily kick him to the curb if he doesn’t make the team. That would be my guess.
  23. Lag time or something the sensor was too slow to pick up on...it can be pretty surprising what a camera can miss in a short period of time. On a doorbell camera...probably not overly important. I almost bought a Ring doorbell on a Black Friday deal...but I can get a package of Blink cameras for about the same cost and have it watch over three different spots around my house. I will just put one by the front door by the doorbell...basically the same end result.
  24. Does Alexa also get the stuff out of the fridge and put it in the microwave? I hate Alexa. I am always at someone's house and they are like, "Alexa, living room ON. ALEXA! Living room ON! ALEXXXXXXAAA LIVING ROOOM ON!!!" Just get up and flip the light switch!!
  25. Hulu has fast forward DVR if you get the upgraded DVR...which is $10. As it stands that makes it the same price as YouTube TV, but will actually make it more expensive when the price for Hulu goes up in a few weeks. We will see how standalone RSN works...I see a lot of issues. If it is a standalone product the sports fans have to shoulder the entire cost...where now it is divided among all the subscribers. For that reason I doubt it will be anywhere close to cheap...even for one regional area. It also seems you would have to stick people in a year contract for financial reasons. If not Brewers fans or Bucks fans would just drop the service after the season ends. I can't imagine how bad subscriptions would be if the Brewers/Bucks suck. Subscriptions would plummet after a month or two of the season if they suck. That is before even considering the revenue sharing problems and how MLB would respond to it.
