  1. Good points madtownhawk. In fact when I started this thread, I was hoping that we could get Gray with a package headlined by Corey Ray, with the 2nd and 3rd pieces being solid (Dubon and Clark). And the majority of posters thought that it was an INSANE amount to give up for him. But now that the market has been set with the Quintana trade somewhat, I don't think there's a snowballs chance in hell that Oakland would accept that offer.
  2. I 100% agree with this. Orlando Arcia would probably be the only player that I would consider a current core Brewer. A defensive minded SS who can hit is a rare commodity in baseball. Like I've said before, I don't think he's a "franchise" player however. Ten years ago, I'd say we had two of those in Braun and Fielder.
  3. I agree with much of your assessment, but you must really be buying into Nelson's sudden breakout this year. Even as such, here are the Rotations of likely NL Playoff teams: Nationals 1. Max Scherzer 2. Stephen Strasberg 3. Gio Gonzalez 4. Tanner Roark 5. Joe Ross-inj Dodgers 1. Clayton Kershaw 2. Alex Wood 3. Rich Hill 4. Kente Madea 5. Brandon McCarthy Cubs 1. Jake Arrieta 2. Jon Lester 3. Jose Quintana 4. Kyle Hendricks 5. John Lackey Arizona Dbacks 1. Zack Greinke 2. Robbie Ray 3. Taijuan Walker 4. Patrick Corbin 5. Zack Godley Nelson would be the #4 starter on all of these teams and likely the 5th stater on the Cubs. You may be the first person to ever call Jimmy Nelson a "low end ace". I hope you are right.
  4. Actually Braun's spotty health makes him a question mark as well. lol
  5. I hate to always be the "negative Nancy" but I feel that all three of these players are having their career years. None are franchise type players despite the numbers they are putting up this season, IMO. Shaw and Santana can be solid regulars going forward. Nelson to me is a good 4th starter on a playoff caliber team. This same post could have been made this time last year with the names Jonathan Villar and Junior Guerra, IMO. If by "Core guys" you DON'T mean franchise type, all-star level players but simply guys you'd want to hold onto because they are cheap solid regulars, then that's something different.
  6. And if the Brewers would have been in this position last season, Brewer fans and prospect hounds would have said that Phillips and Nottingham are "untouchables" in any trade. Now a full year later, those prospects "shine" has worn off a bit and the reality of it is that those guys could not come close to headlining a deal for a significant trade deadline piece like Quintana. Phillips could maybe be a 3rd piece in a trade and Nottingham would almost be just a throw in at this point. I'm sorry but our current rotation is filled with question marks and guys with short track records of success. I think most Brewer fans would pick Jimmy Nelson to pitch Game 1 of a playoff game at this point. I hope his breakout is real, but let's not forget that this is a guy who didn't even have a rotation spot of his own entering this season and lost 16 games last year with a 4.62 ERA and an awful 1.52 WHIP. Anderson and Guerra are hurt. Garza and Davies can not be consistently counted on to pitch well. Woodruff is a rookie who's also going to be coming off injury. Growing pains at MLB level are the norm. And I'm not as convinced that the Brewers need a arm for the pen as bad as some do. Knebel, Barnes and Hughes have all been pretty solid. Drake is like a right handed LOOGY. Hader has been good when used. Torres is a veteran with a long track record of success. Stearns just traded for LHP bullpen depth with Tyler Webb and picked Jeanmar Gomez off the waiver wire.
  7. How is Chase Anderson greater or even equal to Zack Greinke? Also, how is Jimmy Nelson greater or even equal to Yovani Gallardo? I get that both Anderson Nelson are having breakout seasons, but that is just nuts. I think overall our current offense could be on par with 2011, but 2011 Braun and Fielder are a more potent middle of the lineup. The 2011 rotation after Yo was nothing too special, but that 2011 rotation still had a ton more experience and track record then our current one. Also, the current bullpen overall might be as good but also lacks the experience that the 2011 bullpen had.
  8. I was 8 in 1982 and had just starting getting into baseball. I remember watching the last game of the season against the Baltimore Orioles. I believe the Brewers only needed to win one game of the final series in Baltimore to clinch the AL east but their backs were against the wall going into that game. My biggest memory was Ben Oglives awesome slidding catch in the LF corner. I saved the game and the season and yesterday never happens without that play. Amazing. The next summer I would ride my bike down to the corner store a couple of times a week and buy 3 packs of 1983 Topps baseball cards for a buck. Still my all-time favorite set. I collected all the Brewers, which had their 1982 stats on the back. I still get warm fuzzies from looking at these. Great memories. What a team of colorful characters!
  9. Saw Brett Phillips abs at Miller Park last night, and he just doesn't strike me as being an impact bat at the MLB level. I think the Brewers should look to sell high on him and include him in a package for a quality starter. At this point, I'm hoping he'd be the 3rd piece in a significant deal.
  10. Darvish WILL become available and likely is alreay, but it doesn't make as much sense for the Brewers to pay a steep price for a 2 month rental. deGrom...not happening. I think the guys that make the most sense of the Brewers are Sonny Gray, Marcus Stroman or Dan Sraily. Yelich in CF makes zero sense for a multitude of reasons.
  11. Between Brewers pitching coach Derek Johnson having coached Sonny in College at Vanderbilt and new Brewer Stephen Vogt having caught him Oakland, I'm certain the Brewers have plenty of inside people putting an educated opinion in on Sonny. I think the Brewers could beat the package most of those interested teams are offering except maybe the Astros. I also think it would be tough to beat a Cubs package headlined by either Kyle Schwarber or Ian Haap.
  12. Sonny Gray tonight... 6 IP 2 H 0 ER 1 BB 5K W Pulled at 100 pitches
  13. A 2019 FA is not a rental by baseball terms, BTW. I'd be interested in "controllable" RHP Kyle Barraclough however.
  14. I usually make a new Tim Dillard photo collage at least once a week. I rarely share them with others on the web however, so consider yourself lucky.
  15. The original title was just "Tim Dillard". I failed to realize how many posters would click on it actually excited that prospect Tim Dillard could be headlining a huge trade deadline move, and then have their confusion turned quickly to anger when they realized it was not the case. As a courtesy, I added a disclaimer in the thread title. If I was ever to be banned from Brewerfan.net, god forbid, I just really wanted to go out in a Blaze of Tim Dillard Themed Glory.
  16. Schwarber alone is probably more valuable than any one piece the Brewers could offer. Ian Haap also.
  17. The inclusion of Brett Phillips isn't going to hold up any potential trade IMO.
  18. The Cubs signing of international free agent OF Eloy Jimenez for $2.8M in 2013 essentially landed them 3 1/2 years of a young #2 starter. The Brewers signed international free agent 3B Gilbert Lara a year later for $3.1M. Good idea by the Brewers to start to spending on international free agents. However, Lara's still only 19 but he's hitting just .191 this season at single A for the Timber Rattlers. Bummer.
  19. If Rosenthal's report is correct, then the Brewers REALLY WERE in on a potential Quintana deal. I think this is a sign that Stearns is willing (and looking) to make a big trade this month.
  20. The Giants would 100% walk away from that offer. The White Sox nearly got that much for LHP Jose Quintana. The price for Bumgarner would be considerably higher without a doubt.
  21. I was really hoping the Cubs wasted the their top prospects by trading for a rental like Yu Darvish. It's very rare for a contending team to be able to acquire a young LHP pitcher with 3 1/2 years of control. Sucks that this move hurts the Brewers for a long period of time. It almost cost the Cubs the same for just 2 months of Chapman last July.
  22. As long as we don't trade Garrett Cooper, I'll be happy.
  23. I really think Chicago won this trade, hands down.
  24. Rotation update Cubs vs Brewers RHP Jake Arrieta RHP Jimmy Nelson LHP Jon Lester RHP Chase Anderson (Suter to fill in) LHP Jose Quintana RHP Junior Guerra (Woodruff to fin in?) RHP Kyle Hendricks RHP Zach Davies RHP Jon Lackey RHP Matt Garza How does this move NOT effect the Brewers this season?
