  1. Yeah, the best thing Jeffress is doing right now is limiting walks and homers, but that K rate is really low. You'd expect it to come up, but you'd also expect the BB and HR rates to rise a bit also. He's a solid reliever right now, but I am skeptical that any team thinks his value has risen a lot this year just because he's racked up some saves.
  2. I definitely think a trade with the Cubs could work, but I don't think Schwarber is the best target. By the time he plays for the Brewers, he could only have four years of service time remaining. Adding that to question marks about his injury (he'll probably be fine long term, I admit) and the fact that he can really only play first base, and that really lowers his value for a rebuilding team like the Brewers.
  3. Except that it's been widely speculated that the Brewers would pay a sizable amount of Braun's salary in order to gain a impact return in prospects/players. So no, they would not just be gaining money.
  4. Underwhelmed by that Cameron article. Very much focused on how Braun fits in with other teams and much less on what they could offer the Brewers. Most of the teams he mentions would have little to no chance at Braun.
  5. There is plenty of doubt as to whether the Brewers will get a great player. Number 5 picks bust pretty frequently. Buster Posey in 2008 is the last one who's been an impact player.
  6. Man. Holding on to Lucroy until the deadline is a huge gamble, but it could pay off in a big way. If he stays healthy, it feels like that could create a big market.
  7. Yes, that is because generally, teams who are clearly not competing have sold before the season, and all the rest of the teams at least attempt to contend until July. The Brewers are a very unusual case, though, in that they are clearly not looking to compete this year, but still have a significant chip. They are great candidates to be exceptions to this rule.
  8. There is quite a bit out there about how these organizations may actually do more harm than good. Here's one: http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/07/22/the-new-abolitionists-mexico-dominican-republic-human-trafficking-mormon-our/
  9. Only thought is that it's pretty early and he didn't want to go to the bench yet. Not sure if it's a good excuse, though.
  10. If he's sick, it's hard to see Bumgarner going more than three innings the way this is going. This will be a long game.
  11. I also just realized that I would take the SF player over the MIL player at every single slot in today's lineup, 1-9. That's amazing.
  12. Gennett against Bumgarner is a disaster, and Braun should be batting second, but otherwise I like the lineup construction. Definitely looking forward to this season, as much for following the farm system as anything, but plenty to watch for at the MLB level too. Just keep Lucroy healthy until he's traded, and then I can watch the games with a lot less apprehension.
  13. Boomer, just curious. Are you still sticking to your 100 loss prediction?
  14. If the Brewers were to send Lucroy to the Cubs, I'd target Addison Russell over Schwarber. I doubt they'd go for it, but they have some depth, and Russell hasn't really broken out yet. Pipe dream, though.
  15. Braun is probably slightly overpaid. I was hoping Gordon/Upton/Cespedes would get more in free agency, making Braun look better in comparison. Still, he's not an albatross. If the Brewers need to throw in money in order to get a better return, they definitely should do so. I would like to see Braun, Lucroy, and Smith traded ASAP. Smith could get hurt at any time, as could any pitcher. Lucroy also plays a physically demanding position and therefore holding on to him too long is risky. Braun has nagging injuries often, so it's possible his value could go down soon, too. The Brewers can't risk being stuck with that contract for a player who is hurt/in steep decline. I'd like to see those three traded, along with Peralta, but Peralta isn't quite as urgent as the other three.
  16. Think of 2003-2005. Was it not exciting to see Rickie Weeks, Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, J.J. Hardy, Ryan Braun, and Yovani Gallardo graduate to the big leagues after years of hearing about them? How about when they made the wildcard in 2008 with the homegrown base? This is what the Brewers are gearing up for again. It's been over ten years since they've been able to say that. It will take time, but it should pay off in the long run. It's certainly better than the alternative of playing mediocre baseball with underperforming, overpaid veterans like we've seen the last couple seasons.
  17. If it increases the return, of course the Brewers should do this. It's clear that they'd have more suitors if they ate 5-6 mil per year, and they'd get back better players. Their payroll is low enough where they have the capability of doing this. It's like what they did with Aaron Hill/Isan Diaz, but on a larger scale.
  18. I'd love to wager on this. I think it's much more likely the Brewers improve on last year's record than they lose 100 games.
  19. Curtis Granderson, Matt Carpenter, Paul Goldschmidt, Justin Upton, Nelson Cruz, and Mike Trout were all in the top 15 in strikeouts. I think they're pretty fun to watch.
  20. This should be the least of Stearns' worries. Maldonado and somebody they claim after Spring when rosters are cut down, I guess?
  21. Wow. This is the "Capuano is the true ace, not Sheets!" argument, except it's over who's the "team leader" or "face of the franchise."
  22. Yes, so noble of Braun, who's got a nice cushy long-term deal, to smack down the guy whose team won't give him one.
