  1. Sad day. My favorite Brewer ever. He will probably be forever underappreciated by the vast majority of Brewer fans. He was tremendous. At least he went to a team I like.
  2. Please heal quickly Jon Leuer.
  3. That's true. What it comes down to is we're faced with a strong possibility of getting one measly playoff appearance out of this heralded corps we'd been hearing about for years, and it's due to the lack of pitching.
  4. I am loving the expensive comedy bits from the last couple days.
  5. I didn't mean to imply I don't think Davis isn't an improvement over Suppan. The point I'm trying to make was the Brewers' rotation was gawdawful last season, and in my eyes it hasn't been improved enough. Melvin had a very tall task in front of him, and from here it sure looks like he's fallen short. The rotation is upgraded, but not enough to make up for the drop-off in offense. The offense won't be nearly as good. Look at positions likely to regress just because of how well they produced last year: LF, 1B, 2B. There's likely to be some decline there. Then there's a huge offensive downgrade from Cameron to Gomez. Really, the only positions where it's safe to expect a little improvement are catcher and RF. To make up for the offensive drop, they needed to add more to the rotation than Wolf and Davis. Sure, the rotation will be better next year, but my point is that it still won't be enough. EDIT: Darn it all, I can never get paragraph spacing on my mac for some reason. Sorry for the jumbled mess.
  6. I agree Diskono. Jarmusz was huge last night. He had Manny Harris beyond frustrated. His offensive game is certainly ugly right now, but he is earning his playing time through his D.
  7. There's also a good chance they won't have the room to add salary during the season due to this Davis signing.
  8. The ugliness was fresh in my mind, but I'd like to thank Marquette. If I hadn't DVRd that wretched game and watched it right after Wisconsin, I'd probably be feeling worse about the Badgers' performance tonight.
  9. Keeping up with the analogy, I'd argue they bought a 150,000 house in an old suburb when some great new condos in a hip area were going for a similar price. Or something? Basically, they could have done better for similar money. Is Sheets really going to get much more than 5.25 mil? We could have had Sheets or Bedard instead of Davis and Hawkins.
  10. I really have to say I'm surprised by all the positive reaction. Davis hasn't been good since leaving Milwaukee. He was below average last year. His k/bb has been below 2 each of the four years. Finding someone who simply isn't as bad as Suppan isn't enough. They needed someone better than Doug Davis.
  11. A slightly better rotation with a slightly worse offense, and they're right around .500 again. They needed bigger improvements than this to be a good team.
  12. The Brewers have discovered the next Moneyball undervalued market: walks issued. They'll lead the NL. Melvin from five days ago: "Our new thing is that we're not just looking for innings. We're looking for quality innings. We like our offense and our bullpen. We just need quality innings from our starters." Huh? Davis is exactly what he said they don't want. Randy Wolf and Doug Davis aren't going to make the league's worst rotation into a competitive one.
  13. Changing course a bit, Marquette has really surprised me this season. If it weren't for a couple late-game free throw gaffes, they'd be in great position right now. That hasn't gone unnoticed, as Pomeroy currently has them at number 17 (he values close losses to good teams higher than close wins over bad teams). Buzz has really done a great job. After losing the Big Three and Cadougan going down before the season even started, I thought this would be an ugly year. Jimmy Butler is a pretty great college player, and DJO has really come on lately. I think Dwight Buycks is getting more comfortable and could really be a well-rounded scorer. I expected Marquette to miss the tournament this year, but it seems they should be expected to make it at this point.
  14. Conan still relentless tonight. Apparently he was actually offered a role in an adult film. "Just as I'm about to climax, I'll be replaced by Jay Leno."
  15. It's going to be kind of annoying when most of their starters regress to the mean and Rick Peterson gets all the credit.
  16. I am quickly becoming a Jordan Taylor fanboy. Seven assists, zero turnovers against Northwestern.
  17. No Doug Davis, no Jarrod Washburn, no Jon Garland. If they won't sign Smoltz or Sheets they should just save the money for a midseason trade.
  18. No, they'll sign Mulder without seeing him throw. They'll probably skip Sheets' session anyway. Anyone but the Cubs...
  19. Outstanding game yesterday. I think it's quite possible that Jordan Taylor is the best player on the team. He's efficient and has one of the best assist/turnover ratios in the country.
  20. Just about Yost's only redeeming qualities were not bunting or IBBing. Macha's actually refers to "numbers" pretty regularly, so I'm not sure how he's missing this.
  21. I don't get hate for the Morrow deal. He's a huge question mark at this point. League was a very good reliever last year.
  22. I thought UW was "lucky" to only lose by 7. The first half was embarrassing; they looked as though they had never seen a zone defense. I feel confident saying Purdue will beat them even in Madison. I still think Wisconsin will take third or fourth in the conference, though.
  23. Ugh. Instead of getting Smoltz for one year they'll get one of these nondescript guys for two.
  24. Liriano did that a few years ago, and he probably had a case. He was carving up AAA and the Twins just wanted to wait to make sure he wasn't a Super 2.
