  1. Right. The scouts that are very high on Diaz are few and far between - the general consensus is he has a very good hit tool but has limited power, is average defensively and not an impact on the bases. Which means he better hit well. I think Ortiz has the higher ceiling and think Phillips is absolutely better than Diaz. Phillips is better at everything except the hit tool and his hit tool can absolutely be average MLB. I get the O's wanting to rebuild and it helps they got 3 MLB caliber players (maybe a 4th with Bannon) but those dudes are in A+ outside of Diaz while Phillips is ready right now for 5yrs in CF and Ortiz can easily be bumped to AAA tomorrow and be in MLB within a year if they let him throw more than 70 pitches since we don't. Very interesting I don't think you will find all that many scouts that are all that high on Phillips either. In any case, this may just be that the Orioles preferred the Dodgers package despite our belief that the Brewers package may have been the better one. I'm glad DS didn't panic.
  2. I agree, certainly was not a low ball offer.
  3. He also said there are certain prospects he isn't giving up. I don't know what major acquisition you are going to make without your top prospects being involved. He also made similar comments after Cain/Yelich and everyone and their mother thought he would add pitching. That didn't happen either. You may see smaller scale additons but Machado was this years Quintana.
  4. I don't think you get Realmuto without one (and maybe both) of Hiura and Burnes. Agree to disagree but I'm all but certain Realmuto will not be a Brewer.
  5. Good on Stearns for not budging. That would have been about the maximum I would have wanted to give up.
  6. I'm a fan of Nottingham down the line and the idea that if nothing else, he should be a low OBP/high power guy, but I am not sure if Nottingham is going to be much of an improvement on offense the rest of this year or next year over what we've gotten out of Pina, et al. You have to play him at some point to find out.
  7. Probably not. But that doesn’t change the fact that Realmuto likely improves the offense much more than Dozier does. So theoretically if you trade for Dozier you’d have to trade more prospects to get another player or two that would improve the offense as much as Realmuto would. You are correct in a vaccum. Does he improve it more than Hiura playing second and a FA signing like Grandal at catcher plus still having your other assets to get pitching with to go along with Burnes in your rotation? I'm guessing no. Too many folks looking at this year as a make or break year.
  8. I agree with that plan.
  9. At the risk of answering a question with a question, does anyone really think there is singular missing link to this offense?
  10. Then I think it's time to stop seriously considering Realmuto as a legitimate target. DS said himself that there are just some prospects that they are not going to part with. I'd guess Burnes and Hiura are chief among them. So if that's what it takes to get him and we aren't giving that up then he isn't coming here. And no, I don't think DS said that as a bargaining chip.
  11. Was it Larry Waker?
  12. No way I do that.
  13. These ones. There are 32 (!) catchers who have at least 150 PAs this year, who have a better OBP than Perez. 23 of them have managed an OBP of .300 or higher. 14 of them .330 or higher. Including the one we already have.
  14. Sounds like Duffy would fit right in. Lay an egg 30% of the time seems in line with our guys. No interest in Merrifield at all. Kershaw lays eggs. Duffy, when he's right, and he has been lately more often than not, performs like an ace, and that's exactly what gets you through short series. How many guys go through 6 innings against Houston's lineup unscathed? Duffy did just that in June. He's also on a reasonable deal through 2021. Merrifield is an above average player at a position the Brewers are below average, and it'll take Hiura as a centerpiece to get a haul. I'd listen on Duffy but a good stretch doesn't cancel out the bad, especially for Hiura. I have zero interest in Merrifield (or Perez for that matter).

  16. I give up Hiura for Realmuto. Obviously Hiura is a fantastic prospect, we all know that. But that being said there is no 100% guarantee he is a stud at the ML level. There have been plenty of "can't miss" guys who did indeed miss. Realmuto has a ML track record, we know what he is. He is one of the top catchers in the league and we have a gaping black hole at C. In your scenario of Realmuto and Castro, I'd offer Hiura, Ortiz, Nottingham, Gatewood and Bickford. I'd like to keep Ray as he seems to be putting it together finally but if he absolutely has to be part of the deal, then so be it. Then pass on Realmuto for me. No way I give up that package. There are other potential upgrades at catcher that wouldn't cost nearly as much. I'd also be much more inclined to giving Nottingham a whole bunch of playing time the next two weeks to see what we have.
  17. Of course they can. No need to make a panic move at this point.
  18. This is probably the closest I've seen to what a Dozier deal should look like. I don't think the Twins are going to get a huge premium on "second half Dozier." I wouldn't even say Ponce or Medeiros, my offer would be Gatewood, Ponce, and a long-shot. Jon Perrin, Brad Kuntz or Jorge Ortega maybe. That sounds right to me. I wouldn't give Medeiros there.
  19. Stearns is what he is, a new age GM, who is still learning. The July deadline requires ability to think fast and understand the other's teams needs well enough to make an offer that will get his target. He's failed the last two July's to get his number one target. I don't know how else you can spin it other than to say he failed. It was pretty clear to me back in May that Machado was the missing link for this team. We don't know when Stearns came to that realization, but he clearly wasn't prepared to do what it took. The Dodgers didn't give up all that much. They got their man. Stearns is left going over the scraps. Melvin got his guy and the expense of the future. In my opinion to make only two playoff appearances off of that core group was a travesty. I mean, Melvin was the guy who threw Nelson Cruz in a trade. Melvin ran this organization into the ground and Stearns has brought it back and not just or a year here or there. Stearns obviously wanted Quintana and Machado, but not at any price. The weak move is to throw assets at another club until you get what you want. That doesn't make you anything but a sucker and other GMs would feast on that to no end. No, the strong and well prepared move is to set your price and not exceed it out of panic and desperation. I'll take the strong, well prepared GM over the weak one every time. If you think Machado alone was the missing link for this team, you have a lot to learn.
  20. Wait, so are we giving Doug Melvin credit for Zach Greinke here? Because he was an offseason trade, therefore not decisive...right? maybe he's referring to Shaun Marcum Marcum was off-season too.
  21. post removed. please don't call individual posters out like that.
  22. It has been a quiet deadline so far. Other than the Machado there hasn't been much scoop on anyone going anywhere.
  23. It's not just this thread either. These proposals are straight out of video games.
