  1. They were good moves, but acquiring players in the winter is like hitting home runs in the third inning. They're good but not decisive. He has yet to show in back to back years that he can finish the job and get the man he wants in the 9th inning with the season on the line. And there's that releasing Scooter Gennett move too. Say what you want about Doug Melvin, but when he set his sights on the playoffs, he got his man. Twice in fact. Yeah, I guess your right now that the trading deadline has passed. Might as well pack it up and not even play the remaining games.
  2. Off the top of my head, I'd go something like this: Burnes (Diaz) Erceg (Bannon) Z. Brown (Kremer) Bickford (Pop) Neuhaus (Valera) If they valued Diaz more than Burnes we would have to give more somewhere.
  3. oh man, that is a great point. Sounds like the issues have been resolved. Should see Machado in Dodger blue on Friday.
  4. What the hell is a throttle jockey
  5. Light? That seems like an overpay particularly with Hiura coming fast.
  6. Exactly! Usually those with the highest level of piety that have the most to hide.
  7. Yes. Sell off second and third tier prospects to better our team now and for the future. I agree, but if you can get a can of worms for a Villar or a Broxton, do that too.
  8. I would advocate for something of a "sellers light" approach at this point.
  9. Why does that matter? Still human beings and if it's wrong then it's wrong.
  10. This is the right call.
  11. True, but you can't say I'm not suspending you be because you did the moronic thing, but rather because it was moronic to not cover it up. If he gets suspended it is gong to be directly because of tweets he made as a 17 year old seven years ago. Not because he was a moron and didn't delete them.
  12. It wouldn't be a suspension for what he did at 17. It would be a suspension for being a moron. Yeah, he was a kid when he wrote that stupid stuff, but apparently he also didn't think it mattered enough to go back and delete those tweets once he was in the public eye. That's the choice he made as an adult, and likely why there will be consequences. You can't suspend someone for being a moron.
  13. Nobody is saying all rentals are equal. I've made the distinction between a Dozier and a Machado even though both are rentals. Context matters and the difference between Machado and Sabathia has context that matters. Who exactly was going to trade Machado for all this marginal talent you speak of? "Hey, take our junk that probably won't ever amount to much for this exceptionally talented rental player?" In what world is that going to work?
  14. Braun has gone weeks and months without playing and people have not forgotten. Also, I feel like this issue is a bit more sensitive for many people. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm not so sure this is going to "go away" as fast as some believe it will. I don't know. I can totally see the baseball purists considering what Braun did to be a much higher order of offense.
  15. So you want to suspend him because he forgot to delete some tweets? Yes, given the vile content of those tweets and the distraction they caused on a night we should be celebrating baseball. Maybe I'm reading this wrong but you seem to be contradicting yourself. You say you don't want him suspended for the tweets but rather that the tweets still exist and in the next breath you say you want him suspended for the tweets. I mean, causing a distraction isn't really a punishable offense here. This seems personal to you and hey, I get it. I'd hate to see what society would look like if we condemned every one that said something vile when they were 17.
  16. Agreed with everything. My call for a suspension isn't to placate me. It's to send a message to women, African Americans and the gay community that MLB takes this seriously, and that the game is punishing a player to has shown himself to be disrespectful of them. I think it's possible to believe Hader's comments last night and still need to punish him for allowing this stain to happen. So the fact that the people currently in his life vouch for him and say that this isn't who he is today doesn't send a message? It think that clearly says he recognized his ways and he corrected that behavior before anyone called him out on it. He changed because he wanted to, not because he got caught. I think that says a ton about who he is. Do we go back 10 years and punish any player that has shown disrespect to a minority group when they were a teenager and punish them for who they used to be?
  17. I understand but what good does stashing prospects in AAA or the bullpen for 3 years waiting for a spot or an injury do? At some point these guys start to lose their value. We more than anyone have to capitalize on these guys values. That means not only trading them before it becomes clear they aren’t major league quality but also giving them opportunities to succeed when they are ready. If Corbin Burnes, for instance, isn’t given a legitimate opportunity to win a rotation spot next year then I think we’ll be wasting his talent. But then again I’d say the same thing about Peralta. And Woodruff. But in reality there is just no chance all three will have the ability to win rotation spots next year. Not with Chacin Anderson Nelson and Davies all still around. That’s why I’d have no problem whatsoever using two of them to acquire Degrom or Syndergaard. I think you are moving the goal posts a bit here. I think the argument has been about not using that talent on rentals. I think everyone would have a different opinion if we had wiffed on DeGrom or Syndergaard. Either way, I see no evidence this team is nesting away prospects. They just moved a bunch for Yelich. They are promoting guys quickly not only to the majors but aggressively to through the system. I think that is a bit of a strawman.
  18. Correct. There is a difference between depth and high end quality depth. There is no way this system has the high end talent it had when Fielder and that group were coming up. I think we have more depth now, but less high ceiling talent. To lose any portion of that upper crust talent for a rental would have been a travesty.
  19. So you want to suspend him because he forgot to delete some tweets?
  20. So if the Cubs are better top to bottom (even with Machado) what are you trying to accomplish? Why not hold off? How would a rotation of Neslon, Anderson, Peralta, Burnes and Woodruff look next year? Maybe they can use Davies/Guerra to improve the pen? Maybe Nottingham can be the answer behind the plate and Hiura will be ready at second/ We are a step behind the Cubs but how much more can the Cubs really improve? We have given them everything they could ask for the last two years with significantly more roster holes. I think the Brewers can improve a ton and close that gap. I don't think I buy that the Cubs will be the dominant force for the foreseeable future if the Brewers manage to play this thing right. However, if they start dealing away significant pieces for rentals, they will always be searching for answers at multiple positions and stay one step behind the Cubs. If they had one singular hole, and Machado fit that hole, then I'd have been more for that trade. The context matters. I also think there is a 100% right answer here and I think DS made it.
  21. Anyone else think it's strange we haven't heard anything new? No, "the Brewers are pivoting to......." type of stuff?
  22. That's the thing though. We've seen this play out before, right? If you are truly a WS contender your team should be able to stand on it's own without help. Machado wasn't a NEED move for the Dodgers, he was a luxury, get over the top move. Even if we had gotten Machado I still look at the Cubs and Dodgers as having significantly better rosters to to bottom. Would Machado have made them better, sure, but he didn't make them the favorite for anything.
  23. Above all else? Good to know that you value baseball games more than human decency. And of course his teammates will defend him and say that's not who he is, that's how it always works. Because you know better? I know I did some things in my teenage years that I have a great amount of regret for today (and I ain't no spring chicken). Looking back, I was probably pretty racially ignorant because that's what I knew (or didn't know). Today, that isn't who I am because I've grown and become my own person. If the people that live and work with him every day vouch for him, who am I to say it isn't true. I know for darn sure it isn't for me to get on my pulpit and judge what a young man did at 17. Stones and glass houses.
  24. Another really good point.
