  1. I know I shouldn't have laughed but.......
  2. Put it this way... if you put together a trade package for archer where you step back and think, "that doesnt hurt so much..." it's not going to be enough. Broxton, aguilar, perez and ponce dont tip the scales Maybe so. And if so, I say, time to walk away. Getting a good SP needn't cost that much. Apparently it does need to cost that much. If they could get the equivalent or better of Archer for that package, it would have been done.
  3. That is how I feel as well. Money. I would be far more willing to be a prospect hugger if the players we were talking about had anything more than 50/50 shot at being an all-star but I'm not sure any of the players being mentioned in that group have even a 50/50 shot. If they come out of all of this still holding Hiura, Lutz, Ortiz and Woodruff, that would be an amazing job by Stearns.
  4. Wow...just.....wow!
  5. Your minimum threshold is a guy that went 12-4 with a 2.74 ERA last season? Tough crowd! I would say Corbin's upside is similar to Anderson's. Yes, if you're serious about contending for something more than a one game playoff, Anderson has to start he season as the number three. Unless I missed something there is no guarantee Nelson comes back 100%. It's also going to be much easier to sustain an injury to one of your top pitchers if your three is Anderson.
  6. In my mind the minimum threshold for acquiring a pitcher whether they are better than Anderson. Is Cobrin better than Anderson?
  7. Of course they want money. You like being paid for your labor too I assume? As it stands now, free agency is the one chance a player has to actually receive what they are worth and deserve, since the years of team control and arb years suppresses their wages in their prime years and ownership reaps huge profits off of their labor in that time. And this is just the Major League portion of their career, most players grind away in the minors for years making next to nothing. Don’t blame players for wanting the money they rightly deserve just because the system is set up to prevent them from receiving that money until the downslope of their career (generally). Yes - comparing my job and salary and impact is exactly the same as Darvish to the Brewers ....... or not even close Except that isn't what he did. Point is, you leverage your skills and experience to maximize the amount of compensation you receive. That is all the players are doing and I don't blame them one bit. If that scares you, then so bit it. Someone else spending their money as they see fit is not a scary proposition for most.
  8. I think this is probably close. My guess is that they have two different paths they can take both involving more than one move. Path A would be something like Sign Darvish and trade for Salazar. Path B would be something like trade for Archer and sign Lynn. I'd bet they have a pretty good idea of what it is going to take to get both scenarios done and need to decide which one to go "all in" on.
  9. Well, that's something. Likely means there are potential moves on the table, and the Brewers brass needs to decide to sign off on them. Ball could be in their court now. Of course, could be a planning meeting for Spring Training logistics, too. But its more fun to think a big deal is on the horizon. Why does it mean any of that? Could mean they have been stonewalled at every turn and need to have a meeting to reassess what to do next.
  10. They have an embarrassment of riches. Multiple top pitching prospects that are at the MLB level or MLB-ready. LHP Luiz Gohara would be my dream addition. Would a Santana and something like Pennington get that done?
  11. Teheran is pretty mediocre now. I think people keep bringing up his name because they remember him as top prospect from 4+ years ago. Don't the Braves have a few ready or near ready young pitchers? Is it possible a Braves deal would center around one of them?
  12. You’re really comparing Suter to Arrieta? C'mon, that isn't close to what he said......and what he actually did say is 100% true.
  13. Good grief, start a thread on Braun's durability already.
  14. Illinois has higher state taxes, a 3ish% difference in state tax on say $140 million is substantial. If you went to the Cubs board you'd see they think Darvish is going to sign with them for 4/$90...LOL. $120-130 is probably the low end of what he might get. Actually...no. A 3% difference(I went 7%/10%) is an incredible $2mil difference on $70mil. Only half his contract is made in Chicago/Milwaukee. pft, lousy 2mil!
  15. I don't doubt that. The point is, the Brewers caved. They tried to play hard ball and lost. They blinked first and that doesn't bode well in these or future negotiations. This stuff happens all the time actually. Agents and GM's lie more than car salesman. This I was told by more than a few people in MLB. I've found that if you enter the process well informed and well prepared, car salesmen are not all that untruthful. Opportunistic, very much so, especially with those who are unprepared and ill informed. I would suspect a high degree of trust is an important part of these negotiations otherwise nothing would ever get done.
  16. I don't doubt that. The point is, the Brewers caved. They tried to play hard ball and lost. They blinked first and that doesn't bode well in these or future negotiations.
  17. As I was told, Darvish's camp was looking for final offers. Brewer's gave theirs and then Cubs came in and exceeded Brewer's offer. I/we assumed that Cubs would get Darvish as their were no other offers coming in....at all. This went on for a few days. Darvish's camp just sat tight and is still sitting. 2 days ago Brewer's came back and matched Cubs. Brewer's don't know yet if Cubs or even other teams have matched. Waiting on Darvish's side now. And the thought from Baseball execs is that if Darvish keeps these teams waiting to much longer that they will A) sign other pitchers decreasing the need for Darvish. B) Teams will withdraw their offers as teams don't want to be jerked around. And because of the latter statement. A Decision is "expected" by Monday. As all teams on Darvish are getting impatient and even a little perturbed. And my source is not aware of where the bidding/numbers/years is at. But..........it's going to be extremely pricey!!! I thought the Brewers gave a hard yes/no deadline and were rebuffed? Doesn't say a whole lot about the Brewers bargaining prowess if they went crawling back with another offer.
  18. Sure, but these things still have to be managed. Even if it's a toy there is a significant amount of planning and consideration going on. These are competitive men by nature, they want to win.
  19. That assumes Nelson comes back at 100% of what he was. They need to acquire two pitchers in my opinion.
  20. The question is then, will limiting their flexibility pay off? And even if they acquired a pitcher, it doesn't mean in two years that they couldn't move on and recoup some players in a trade. Same goes for Yelich and possibly Cain. Sure there are owners that are more or less risk averse than others and/or more profit oriented than baseball results oriented. Either way, do we really believe that people who can afford to buy sports franchises have no plan for the future?
  21. Arizona for spring training?
  22. What the heck does this even mean? We missed with him? He came out of nowhere, and had a great half season. Nagging injuries caught up with him last year. What did they miss with? That makes no sense. Trading him at the 16 deadline like some of us begged them to do. I thought they had tried but didn't find a return they liked. I mean, it is possible that other GM's saw him as a flash in the pan ready to flame out at any moment. I don't think anyone really thought of him as anything other than that but maybe I'm wrong and some thought of him as the real deal.
  23. I think the whole post is very obtuse. They are relieving that pressure by playing Braun at first and both Broxton and Philips have options. There is plenty of room for Santana and any perceived NEED to trade him is artificial. I'd think their aggressive efforts to trade Santana since basically the day the season ended would have been more than enough of an indication that the Brewers wanted to move him. I also think it's ironically obtuse for you to call out other posters after such a condescending tone of your own. If you want to go off of HH19's post then fine, some of us aren't as sold as some others.
  24. They are already assuming Harper will sign with them.... talk about delusional. A couple weeks ago one guy invited us to join their board...claimed they'd be civil. LOL, maybe if they replace the word civil with outrageously rude... There isn't enough money to be part of that community.
