At that point, I think that the chances either signs with the Brewers drops a lot. Before June 6th the Brewers are giving up a 4th round pick and other teams are giving up a 1st round pick. After June 6th, nobody is giving up anything. This makes it less likely that the Brewers sign either once that deadline passes.

I agree. We are probably as close as we’ll get to a WS for the foreseeable future. Our window is short... spend the cash and go for it all! And you base this on what? I'm genuinely curious. The fact that Yelich is a FA after this year? Or that Shaw is? Or that we'll be losing Knebel, Jeffress, Wahl, Hader, Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Nelson next year? This idea that our window is closing is just fake. I can see the argument that we're close and were a game away from the WS last year, but that has nothing to do with the false narrative that our window is closing.

Well this went from an actual interesting read to an obnoxious, childish thread with people making stupid absolute statements and the most pathetic insults that you really don't expect to see outside of a playground. The "little 10?" Is that really your definition of clever? I'm sure the really funny one "Viqueens" just has your stomach hurting. I really can't stand this stupid, fictional "rivalry" between Wisconsin and Marquette. They play each other once a year and don't see each other otherwise. The skewed attacks on the conferences they play in are even dumber. You can cherry pick whatever you want to support your arguments.

That article that was posted above you definitely seems to disagree. And by what definition are you using?

Do you think it's at all possible the Brewers would go with a 6 man rotation once Nelson comes back? I think this would be an easier argument if they had the pen they expected with Hader-Knebel, Jeffress and then Wahl emerging as another high leverage reliever and then Guerra, Anderson, Albers and Claudio to round it out. But wouldn't this be a better would this be a better way of stretching these pitchers out and trying to limit their innings. It feels like the extra day of rest has led to some suggesting pitchers coming over from Japan have tired early, but I don't know how much there is to back that up. I don't think that works with the staff as constructed, as it puts too much strain on too few quality bullpen options right now - plus it would screw with the more established starting pitcher schedules of Chacin, Davies, and in part Woodruff. What I think makes more sense when Nelson comes back is to play musical chairs with starts for 3-4 starting pitchers. The Brewers could easily go through a turn with Chacin, Nelson, Woodruff, Peralta, and Davies while having Burnes miss a start and remain in the pen as a relief option for a few appearances in that ~10 game stretch he doesn't make a start. Next time through the rotation he could switch roles with Woodruff, next time through it could be Peralta or even Nelson. On top of that, they could even give Anderson a few starts to have even more flexibility without having to burn options or start a AAA shuttle - that's all assuming injuries are largely avoided (fingers crossed). It won't be a true 6 man rotation - they will stick with the 5 spots, but a few of those spots will consist of multiple starting pitchers even without having to tap into AAA starting options. I wouldn't be worried about it messing with their normal schedule too much as there are plenty of times throughout a year where you have a day off and you'd have the same type of situation. But I think you're right, if they had their full BP options, that'd be easier to navigate, but you have no clue what you're getting from anyone not named Hader right now. If you could have gone with Guerra/Anderson/Wahl as your middle relievers, Hader to come in where needed and then Knebel and Jeffress to finish them off(maybe throw in Albers as well I guess as he's had success every other year lately+ a guy like Sanchez or whoever) it'd be so much easier. As for now, I'd agree, it's too difficult without having your BP in place.

Next First Round Pick To Have an Impact?
OnTheBlack replied to Jopal78's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I think everyone understands you need to have patience with a young prospect. Where the opinions differ is between those who believe he'll be a good hitter early in his career and those who believe that it'll take another year because he hit .272 and didn't dominant AA last year(the only level he wasn't dominant, he was still good). But this isn't a Lewis Brinson or Corey Ray type player. He's got a much better hit tool and guys like that tend to have more success earlier on. This whole thing is pointless though. I'd say lets wait until it's past the cutoff to even start talking about this and look and see how he's done in AAA, or even better, just wait and see what he does this year. But just in general, I'd hope we'd be patient with all our young guys. It's a tough sport and an even tougher sport the harder you're trying sometimes(over swinging, being overly aggressive for a hitter, or over throwing and losing command as a pitcher). It's rare a prospect comes up and can just relax and doesn't press. We have plenty of time to see if Keston is one of those guys or if he isn't, but I'm pretty sure it'll be tough to find a reason in his one year thus far in full season BB to know one way or another. -
Agree, we don’t HAVE TO trade for anyone right now, but it would be nice to have one more experienced high leverage arm in our pen. But I would also imagine the price to be sky high for said arm. I think most people trust Stearns. If the price is too high, he won't do it. He's not going to trade Hirura for Will Smith, but I'm sure he's looking right now.
-
Agree, we don’t HAVE TO trade for anyone right now, but it would be nice to have one more experienced high leverage arm in our pen. But I would also imagine the price to be sky high for said arm. Which is why you don't do it. It makes zero sense right now. You stand pat and continue to get what you can out of guys that you seem to really undervalue. You truly believe that it makes "zero sense" to try and improve the bullpen right now? So when Hader's tired in August and when we stop winning ever game by 1 run with Hader closing all the games, we'll see if it still makes "zero sense." There's a reason Stearns was even talking to Craig Kimbrel and it's not because it made "zero sense" to sign him.
-
Or I could answer that in an equally obnoxious way by asking myself a question and then answering it. Why do you have to add someone to the pen right now? Don't worry, I'll answer it. Because we know it's going to be a significant issue, Josh Hader has been used as our closer and just pitched 2 2/3 IP because CC didn't have one other arm he could trust to close the game out and it just seems logical that if you KNOW something is going to be a problem and you're built to win this year, there's no good reason to wait until the trade deadline to improve your BP when you know you need to now.

2019 NFL Free Agency/A Busy Day for Green Bay
OnTheBlack replied to Ron Robinsons Beard's topic in Other Sports
Great news. People were speculating that he could start at guard for us last season. Probably won't this year after taking a year off, but as he works himself back into shape, he adds good depth. College tackle also, so more depth there. And as we've seen before, that depth can disappear quickly. Hopefully Spriggs can turn it around this year and stay healthy and whatever it is that the Packers saw in Turner and other teams didn't, lets hope they were right. -
2019 NFL Free Agency/A Busy Day for Green Bay

Actually many people have said Jennings is wrong and it is easy to find that. You just dont seem to look for it. And many of these players are not current players who seem like they would have to say it - Casey Hayward, Chris Banjo, John Kuhn, HaHa, James Jones, even Ryan Grant https://247sports.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/LongFormArticle/Aaron-Rodgers-good-teammate-current-former-Packers-players-support--130985476/#130985476_8 Maybe I am missing something, but I read these comments to say that the article as a whole was wrong and that Rodgers wasn't a bad teammate and that McCarthy wasn't this absent coach as was suggested. I didn't see one person dispute Jennings comments. Comments that are frankly relatively mundane and have been grossly exaggerated in my opinion, but all the same. If I'm wrong and there's someone saying Rodgers has thick skin or that Jennings is lying, by all means, post a link. It just doesn't seem like it's that important though. What Jennings has to say. By the way, look at what people have said about LeBron and how they're saying now how the big time stars don't want to play with LeBron. Usually, if you're the best at what you do, they try and chip away at you. In Rogers case....he's given them some ammunition and they seem to have created some more on their own. -
2019 NFL Free Agency/A Busy Day for Green Bay
OnTheBlack replied to Ron Robinsons Beard's topic in Other Sports
Oh, ok then... None of those guys say Jennings is wrong. None. They just either make a generic statement or say something that has nothing to do with him/they like Rodgers. Both can be true, you know. Jennings, on ESPN last week, said he never heard about the massage and that it was beyond anything he saw or heard. Again, Packer fans continue to misconstrue the things he says. Grant, on your list, said Rodgers is overly sensitive. Clay Matthews has said it. IMO, it is about the harshest thing Jennings has said. For some reason, when he says it, people act like he's the only guy saying it. That's all I've ever seen Jennings say. That and then the comment he made during a game that I believe shows Jennings to be just as sensitive. But I don't see a single comment on there suggesting that Jennings was wrong in any of those comments either. Jennings always has talked about what a good off the field relationship he and Rodgers had prior to that comment. I'm taking all of this article with a grain of salt. I believe McCarthy lost the team and as everyone knows, people like Madden, Walsh and others have said a coach usually does after about 10 years. He was a good coach for a good chunk of his time here. Rodgers is a sensitive diva. So is just about every other QB. I'd like to hear about Brady and BB's issues. We know that Robert Kraft had to jump in the middle and basically overrule BB to trade a backup QB away. Think about that. A backup QB to the most accomplished QB in NFL history caused that much friction between the HC and the QB. I agree with others that Rodgers does seem to be a tough guy for young players to play with because he expects too much too quickly and I'll buy that. Especially since Finley talked about how "it was crazy" how Rodgers wouldn't throw it to you unless you ran the "exact right routes." Sorry J-Mike, it's not. But I agree OldSchool, I see basically a bunch of prominent Packers who played on other very well run teams basically say this article is garbage, but none say that what Greg Jennings said was wrong. -
I'd also add comparing one of the best relievers in the history of baseball to other pitchers who have done this in the past few years is pointless. Holland was great later in the season last year. You can't bring pitchers straight from working out and throw them into high leverage situations. If the Brewers signed him, I doubt they'd do this.
-
With respect, it's not always differing opinions, but rather someone constantly talking down to people that's creating the issues. Comments like "what don't you understand," and the like can be a lot more divisive than simply one persons opinion on signing a player or not.

Can anyone offer up anything about what's going on with him? Last I heard he was pitching in the fall instructional league last year after extended ST'ing last year. I didn't see him on a roster to start the year. He seems like he basically went through what Taylor Williams went through and then some. Still, curious where a former potential #1 overall pick with the upside to be an ace(again, at one time) who I heard sporadic reports on is. I realize at this point he's not really a significant prospect any longer, but still curious. Also, Drew Rasmussen. What's the deal with him. Love that the Brewers take shots with guys like these. Guys with the huge upside. Is he throwing yet? IIRC, he was picked by us last year, but had undergone a second TJ surgery, so he was sitting out all year last year. Appreciate any updates.

Being a consistent top 4 team in the Big 10 is about as much as you can hope for. If you're consistently that good, something even more difficult now with Maryland, but if you're a top 4 B10 team now, the Badgers are going to be making some deep tourney runs. I for one would be 100 pct satisfied with that. That gives you the chances to go to back to back final 4's, beating what many considered one of the best college teams in recent history the previously undefeated UK team and losing a close game in the finals. I looked back at that UK team BTW. That team would make a good NBA team right now. Willy Cauley-Stein, Karl Anthony-Towns, Devin Booker, Lyles and then a few others. Didn't realize Booker was on that team. I knew those Harrison twins were, not that they ended up doing anything. Not saying they're gonna run the Warriors out of the building or anything. In fact I'm not really saying anything other than marveling at the NBA talent UK produces year after year.

I'm trying to think who would be the best option. I don't like the idea of any of them being pulled from the rotation. Burnes certainly seems like he'd be the best reliever. He was effectively a RH'ed Hader late last year, but he does have 4 pitches and the upside to make him an ace(I'd argue all 3 young arms could be low end aces or #2, though they're still a long way away from that). It'll almost certainly be one of them, probably Woodruff as I don't think Davies is much more valuable in the pen. Really excited to see how this team has jumped out to a 4-1 start though with the bad news that came right before the season started.

No kidding, how bad has the Brewer bullpen so far? NL ranks- ERA = 5th (3.57) FIP = 3rd (0.96) OPS against = 2nd (.590) Is this another Aprils Fools? Using the BP's stats after 5 games? 3 of which for the record Hader has pitched in as our closer, which I'd assume we can ALL agree is not ideal? The Brewers have played well. They still need to address their pen earlier than later. Like I've said over and over. I also will say again I trust CC and Stearns to figure it out.

Keuchel & Kimbrel in Milwaukee Today?
OnTheBlack replied to sveumrules's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
There's at least a post or two like this every April Fool's day, and has been pretty much for the 15+ years I've been following this board. It's tradition. Yes. People have spent time and effort creating satirical posts for April Fools day. Not a 2 sentence lie. This was not a joke, this wasn't satire, this wasn't funny in any way shape or form to anyone but the person who wrote it. https://onmilwaukee.com/sports/articles/brewers-cubs-toll-april-fools.html I really don't get this. Is this article an example of why you dislike April Fools? Because of how stupid and obvious some of them are? Or are you trying to say this article was actually a good example? Because I chuckled at this thread. That article just made me cringe. I'm not saying one has to be believable, but the jersey surcharges? Talk about trying WAY too hard. The funniest ones are ones that people either truly believe and that you know have a good sense of humor, or are quick and short and just make you chuckle a bit. This was the later. -
Keuchel & Kimbrel in Milwaukee Today?
OnTheBlack replied to sveumrules's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Plus...really...if you didn't 100 expect someone to do this today, that's all on you. I expected a "Kimbrel signed 3/62" type post. It's April Fools day and we're talking about a kids game(baseball). -
Right, I don't think it would have created any issues had they posted the job. I was also under the impression that if you had named a successor you could forgo the process that has been cited, but either way, if the AD makes it known who the next Head Coach is going to be, the posting period doesn't really matter. And especially when it's a guy like Barry. He can certainly throw his weight around and name a HC. I know they did it in another sport just this year. To be fair, at the time, I was on Bo's side. It seemed like he was ready to step down before the season that he actually did, there was some tension, Bo wanted Gard to take over, it seemed like Barry wanted to do a more comprehensive search, then whatever happened with Bo happened and he stepped down, team takes off and Barry is almost stuck with Gard at that point. As much as I trust Barry as the AD, minus a few small mis-steps, I trusted Bo when he sang Gard's praises(as well as the players who said it was Gard who ran the practices IIRC).

Not to mention losing out on both Hauser brothers and Herro(who looks like first rounder if he declares now). Hard to blame him for either individually. One brother decides to go to Marquette, the other will. Herro has a chance to go to a Basketball factory and play right away...again, tough to blame him. But perhaps a more up tempo style of play would be more enticing... UW BB looks like it's entering a sustained period of mediocrity. They had 3 upper classmen contribute this season and finished 4th in the Big10 and were a 5 seed in the tournament. And this was "the year," they were going to be good for the foreseeable future. Plus, I don't believe anyone was confident in this team going into the tourney. The teams that tend to thrive in the tournament are the teams that can get hot, shoot it from 3 and shoot free throws to close out games. And usually their best player can either do those two things, or they have a really good supporting cast. Does that in any way sound like UW? This is also the last year of Happ, the player some have argued is the best player in UW history. I assume those saying that are suggesting as much simply mean he had the best overall career. He certainly wasn't as good as even Kaminsky was just a few years ago and this just may be my age, but Finley also seemed like he was a better player. I don't particularly care either way, but the point is, this was the year they looked to be good and then it looked like they would struggle the following years. And they were blown out in the first round. None of this to say you're wrong, and I'll be the first to say that every other year you wondered how the Badgers BB team was going to be able to finish in the top 4 of the B10 again and they managed to, so it's possible without Happ, you'll see Gard play a little differently and the same will be true. It just doesn't feel like the same and I would say the NIT seems more likely.
