  1. I predict this will be the hottest topic on the board until either Pavano signs with Milwaukee or goes elsewhere. I think Melvin will be all over Pavano's agent to make a deal happen. If you believe they were even willing to offer Cliff Lee 7 years, that should tell you all you need to know about Melvin being on the hot seat this year. This doesn't really make sense. What some fan's belief about what Melvin might be willing to do, with no evidence to support said belief, tells us all we need to know about Melvin's job status? I don't get it.This is a simple case of reading between the lines. One can infer that he was getting to the fact that Melvin has a lot of pressure on him this offseason to build a winning pitching rotation. It makes complete sense even though he didn't back up any of his information/statement. The need to act aloof and/or elitist was unnecessary. I think you guys are reading into what I wrote too much. I apologize if I didn't make my point clear. I'm a simple guy and I was simply reading between the lines...that is all. I am certainly not aloof and/or elitist. I'm simply trying to state that it is in my "opinion" a make or break year for Melvin and the information from which we have these discussions seems to indicate that...(a losing record last year, Fielder's contract, fan and ownership expectations, etc.)
  2. [3:26pm] >> The Brewers have met with right-hander Carl Pavano and his agent, according to Adam McCalvy. Doug Melvin says the trade market is not buzzing too much, so he is switching gears to the free agent market. Cue the music, ladies and gentlemen. I predict Pavano gets overpaid to sign with Milwaukee. And I'm (gulp) okay with it, only because this is likely Fielder's and Melvin's last go round in Milwaukee together.
  3. I'll be willing to think it's the Phillies. He loved it there and the fans didn't boo too often. Sounds like a good fit.
  4. Wasn't there trade interest in John Maine a couple years ago from the Brewers, or was that speculation on this site? I agree, bring him in as a NRI with incentives.
  5. Maybe at best the Brewers could get a #5 starter or decent starting pitching prospect that's about a year away. I can't imagine them netting more in return, and what I'm throwing out there may be a stretch. I'd like to see them get rid of him though. I don't think his personality is a good fit in Milwaukee...a little too sure of himself and his abilities.
  6. I think it's a foregone conclusion that Mr. Melvin is obligated to go for broke for two reasons. One, we'll only have Fielder for one year and he's gone. The trade market isn't going to net anything worth while at least over the winter. And two, the Brewers need to show significant improvement this year to keep his job. He has to roll the dice this year. It's playoffs or bust for Doug Melvin.
  7. Besides my affinity for Capuano, I'd like to have Webb and Harden on our side. What's the latest on Ben Sheets? Was he even going to be ready for spring training? After doing a little looking, I forgot he blew out the flexor tendon again in his elbow. So, I suppose he's a no-go for all of 2011. I'd also like Pavano on a short-term deal.
  8. I am truly saddened by his passing. He was a master of comedic timing and self-depricating humor.
  9. Thanks for the statistical insight gentlemen. I appreciate it. All of these things being said, I think Capuano should be brought back and there certainly is room enough for both in the rotation. I think that's something we all can agree on. No stone should be unturned when it comes to fortifying the rotation next year.
  10. Narveson had a good September in '09 too. Just sayin'...
  11. I don't need classical music to increase my IQ...I just go here.
  12. Where Wolf will certainly be in the starting rotation in 2011, the jury is certainly out on Parra and Narveson. Capuano, if healthy, you could argue is as effective or even better at times than Wolf. I want Cappy back with an incentive laden contract. IMO, he'd make at least a good #4 in the starting rotation. He showed in September that he can get the job done. The Brewers would be making a mistake if they didn't bring him back to compete in 2011, as long as the contract isn't outrageous.
  13. I'm underwhelmed. This is the least popular choice as far as creating fan excitement is concerned. The Brewers will have their work cut out for them selling season tickets this off-season. I'm not saying I don't like the choice. I think all four finalists are a better fit for the personnel than Macha was, so that should improve our fundamental chances of winning. As far as getting more talent is concerned, that remains to be seen.
  14. Well, this is encouraging info for Valentine supporters like me. Although, I'm not holding my breath. I really think he's the right guy for the clubhouse as well as on the field. The press will love his quotability, but perhaps not his volatility. He would definitely keep things interesting.
  15. I trust Bill Scott's word. I've known him a long time and he is a man of integrity. He takes his job very seriously and has never looked for attention in his career. Trust him.
  16. If all things are relatively equal as has been suggested here (2-3 wins) among whomever is the manager, it would seem to be a prudent investment to get the guy who'll bring more excitement to the table and run more people through the turnstiles. That person is Bobby Valentine. Oh yes, and he's another Texas Ranger reference too. How convenient... When is the decision date on this hire? After the World Series I suppose?
  17. Just trying to have fun, John Briggs. I am heartened by the fact that the Brewers have been proactive, deliberate, and thorough in their search. Regardless, of whom the manager ends up being, they all appear to have attributes that can help fit to the team's strengths. Out of the four candidates, I think Bobby Valentine will sell more tickets and that certainly can't be discounted as a hiring factor, considering the market size and attendance drop off last season. I don't think any of the four will be a bad hire.
  18. You are referring to a gentleman with the initials B.B. I presume.? Do I presume the initials B.B. stand for Bob Barker??? He's available. He's also a California guy...a plus for Mark Attanasio.
  19. I am completely satisfied with your response RockCo, and I appreciate the time you took to explain your informed view. I am not in the know and thought that on the surface, he'd make a good candidate. Based on what you, obsessedwithbrewcrew, and TooLiveBrew have said, it seems to me that a guy like Hurdle is better served as a coach...the good cop, if you will in the clubhouse. There is always a role for a guy like that though, but not necessarily as the manager. Thank you all for your input. That being said, whom, out of the alleged candidates, is the better leader in your opinion?
  20. What is it about Clint Hurdle that makes you nervous, RockCo? I liked how his enthusiasm and "players" style turned around Colorado. I don't know what happened to make the wheels fall off though. Does anyone have any more info? Did he lose his players after a fashion? I think he'd be at least an intriguing interview.
  21. I'd like to see that too, only if both gentlemen can work well together.
  22. Ouch! To hear that Wallach is older now that Harvey Kuenn was in '82 hurts my head and my feelings. Getting old sucks!
  23. His 2010 numbers were around his career averages. That in its own right is amazing after making a comeback from a second Tommy John surgery. I don't know what he made this year...league minimum? In '07 and '08 he made about $3.75 million each year before the second surgery. I'd love to have him around next year, but what is his market value? His numbers suggest he's a solid 3 starter. Don't laugh, but take a look at his career numbers, including this year, and convince me otherwise. I'd like to think he's worth at least a 1 year $2 million deal with a club option.
  24. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing. There are many teams with openings after this season, and without the owner spending the money to get a big-name skipper, it's a possibility that the Brewers may have to settle for a manager with fewer credentials than Macha. I'm not sure I like this situation at the moment, unless they have their sights on somebody already that they think they can acquire. This is certainly a huge story if true. I can see why they'd not pick up the option, but again, this is a cause for huge concern in my opinion.
