  1. Miller would start for half the teams in MLB, and he'll only make $2.25M...Counsell was signed to be a reserve for $3M, Graffy will make about $2.5M as well. I certainly have read nothing to indicate Miller's $1.825 over Rivera will be a reason to dump him. The Crew's bench is now loaded with vets who could start for some, and are top backups. This is the way Doug planned it.
  2. Rickie's career SLG is .397, JJ's is .388...they should be projected close.
  3. Not to mention how weak the DH's were last year. Hardly anyone had a legit starter as a DH, and it showed.
  4. 12 has to be PR, based on the SB's and runs scored. -1 happened so rarely, but much more in the AL...P having to bat because the DH had to play the field? No, I don't know why this would not go under P.
  5. What it tells me is that very few teams have any depth at all. As soon as someone goes down, they are lost, and like the Crew, have to settle for kids that re not ready. That's really been a strength of the A's, they always seem to have a Sarloos type waiting to go, unspectacular, but serviceable.
  6. Jeff Sackmann does the legwork and shows what a true #1 is, and so on. This will hopefully help eliminate those who think a 4 ERA guy is a #4 SP. Those who feel Sheets is anything but a #1 (when healthy of course) are off base as well. This also explains why a 200 inning, 5.25 ERA guy has a huge amount of value. Excellent piece by Jeff. LINK
  7. Brian is right, leftover signs are a minor problem, especially on Sunday, the first day of most sales. As for the next person, who said that prices have to be typed into a computer, they usually don't, unless they are item specific. If it's 25% off juice, they are able to just make it a category wide discount.
  8. Philip Hughes might develop into Ben Sheets, or he might not. I wouldn't dream of it.
  9. In a perfect world, one of the excess OF's would be traded for a solid relief guy, since we're dreaming, a LH who can get hitters of either batter's box out. In reality, I assume we'll shop Geoff, Kevin, and Brady and take in return the most we can get. Since the major league roster appears full and actually has 3-5 decent bench players who are out of options who may not make the team (Rivera, Nix, Sarfate, Hendrickson), one or two of them could be added to a deal to get back a reliever and/or prospects.
  10. MS, the price thing is due to categories and subcategories, and how difficult it is to get all proper items on sale. 25% off juice, for example...does this include "juice" products with little juice, like Hi-C? Mixers? Of course, human error is the cause of a simple mistake...that and many consumers see a sign on one item and assume it applies to everything within many feet.
  11. I would agree that the longer it goes, the more likely someone is to make him a Meche offer.
  12. Yep, SEA's signing of Lehr was a nice one...Justin is about as good a minor league FA as there is.
  13. Trachsel is a much better option that other names on the list. I assume Rod Lopez, Jon Lieber, and tradeable guys will be reconsidered as Plan B.
  14. I find it strange they skipped from the bottom of the 8th to the bottom of the 10th...seems like that would have been more exciting than a scoreless half-inning/inning earlier in the game.
  15. Ajay, I cannot believe you started a thread for this game!! {Just copying a grumpy gus from last week:)} I thought this was the Bill Hall HR in the 9th game. The memory, it's a fuzzy one.
  16. I have no use for save percentage, as you can "blow" 2-3 saves in a game and still win. However, it does imply that the middle relief was not as average as I recall, for whatever reason.
  17. The bullpen certainly wasn't a strong suit, but I'm not sure if "collapse" is the right word. Turnbow's collapse did make us use Lee to get Cordero, but overall, while not strong, I just don't think it fell apart. I'd point to the Ohka/Sheets replacements as more telling than the bullpen...of course, they could easily be related, as the 'pen was asked to do more because of the lack of SP's going deep into games.
  18. I think it's pretty obvious the Crew's depth was rather weak, as they had to go get Graffy and Bell. Depth can also easily be looked at as AAA vets, which was "ok" at best. The funny thing is, if Mark A says we need to improve the bench and to spend what it takes to do so, why would Doug not do it?
  19. What in the world do you talk about for five hours? I thought the same thing. Suffice it to say, I bet Yost and Melvin went over every player on the team, and for lack of a better word, it was a long, grown up version of a pep rally for Brewers' baseball. Mark A was likely there to add things like, "If we need another reliever in June or July, Doug will have the money he needs to go get him." Another thing to consider about the depth I think is superb and others do not, I imagine Jeff Suppan is a lot more impressed with Miller, Counsell, and Graffy on the bench than he would be with Rivera, Barnwell, and someone we plan to pick up in late March.
  20. Penny only makes about $7-8M, so he'd be cheaper...but of course, what are the players worth it would take to get him?
  21. Doug is looking to add a reliever, not lose a pair.
  22. Again, you can't just ignore his previous efforts. 865 in a partial season isn't enough for me to anoint him a future star.
  23. I sure don't see Rios as a 900-1000 OPS guy. He could be, of course, but his first half last year looks like the outlier. If he were 22-23, I'd agree, but at 26, I don't.
  24. First of all, while "median salary" is down, total payroll is up about 30-50% since '02. Teams are using low salary, low experience guys more instead of higher priced vets. This is probably why MIL is now able to compete with other teams for "elite" utility players.
  25. He was an absolute stud at Wausau in the Northwoods League a few years ago, a man among boys. Every throw between innings was right on the bag, so if he can catch, he certainly should, it's his only chance of a career. I'm shocked he works full-time. With his dad obviously "comfortable", I would think he'd be working out 6 days a week as his "job".
