  1. Considering the Cards are chasing Joel Pineiro and begging him to be their 5th starter, I think it's safe to say SL cannot afford Suppan.
  2. Maybe I'm missing something here, but why are we comparing how long it takes for someone to fly to Southern Cal from MIL versus driving there from SF? Let's say Jeff pitches Tuesday, and the team has Thursday off, and Jeff is scheduled to pitch again Sunday. If he were in SF, he could leave as soon as the day game was over Wednesday at say 4, take a flight home, and spend Wednesday night, Thursday, and early Friday with his family. He can fly back at noon Friday and make it to the park in time to get in his pitching session Friday late afternoon. This is a huge advantage if you are the Giants and you are bidding for Jeff, without a doubt.
  3. i had this wonderful dream last night that we signed suppan to a 4 yr/14 mil deal. Did you also fill up your pickup truck for $10?
  4. Would he prefer to be in SF, where he would be an hour or 90 minutes away from home by plane? That will probably be the key to his decision making. He has a restaurant there as well, FYI.
  5. Why is it greedier to want the market value of the system rather than the system?
  6. "kind souls" were out in the parking lot offering to sell theirs for a profit. Nice Xmas spirit. There's certainly nothing more wrong about selling your system than taking it home and keeping it.
  7. Rios sure is getting a lot of play for a 26 y/o with a good half-year.
  8. Rotoworld feels it's between the Giants and Brewers, with the Blue Jays mentioned as well.
  9. because its extremely likely 1 of the top 12 pitchers on this team will open the season on the DL What? But I've been told many times we're fine with Carlos V as our 5th starter, even though that leaves with a AAA vet as our 6th starter (or Zach Jackson).
  10. MLB revenue, according to ESPN radio, has increased 11% each of the last 5 years. With labor peace already at hand for the next several years I see nothing but prosperity in baseballs future. This will lead to continual escalation of player salaries. What are you talking about X? Utility IF's cost $500K and quality SP's about $3M. The irony of this is the escalation of salaries means that players with 0-6 years of experience are more important than ever...and all most people can do is try and find a way to trade any and all youngsters we have for high priced vets...but slightly less than current market value. Suppan is the 2nd best SP on the market, and would improve the rotation of any of the 30 teams in MLB. Joel Pineiro hits the open market and the Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, and Twins all chase after him like mad, but we're not exactly sure Jeff Suppan will help us...because he'll cost $3-4M more than we thought he would a couple months ago?
  11. If indeed there is interest, it would seemingly again show Doug wants to improve his OF defense and is willing to trade off some offense to do so. All his moves thus far would indicate Doug's goal this offseason has been to improve his pitching and defense.
  12. Very enjoyable broadcast. Tony Gwynn Jr. does look wonderful in CF...let's hope he can hit enough in AAA to get at least a platoon job somewhere in '08. The idea of Carlos V being our 6th starter to begin '07 is enough to make me drool. Someone hurt, ineffective, you say? Bring up the guy who was dominating on 10/1, and solid his entire rookie campaign.
  13. If you just tuned in, you missed homers by Prince and Geoff, and a triple by Corey. ------------------------- Edit: tried to cram as much as possible into thread title http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif --1992casey
  14. Donnelly could easily be a closer. He's "closed" the 8th inning often in LA.
  15. Suppan would not have to pay WI taxes unless he became a resident.
  16. With the labor deal in place and a new TV deal, I can't see salaries going down. Even with the horrible luck of the $7M SP deals (Ortiz, Milton), the cost just keeps going up. EDIT: Ben and I think alike.
  17. Splitter (and others), sure the price will be high. That said, I would have expected Jeff to get 3-4y/$7-8M per BEFORE this offseason. What's $2-3M more between friends? It isn't our money.
  18. Since when do Eckstein and Belliard equal stellar defense? At those two vital spots, they are average at best. And only 3 years of 8 have been in SL.
  19. I do not know what was written by others, but in my opinion, if you have a guy who throws 200 innings and has a league average ERA, that's a mighty valuable pitcher. I assume league average is the total from all, starters and relief guys. If you can go through the order several times and still equal those who do not, that's a guy you want on your staff.
  20. I like my pitchers to not want to leave the game. Considering Royster is/was a buffoon, that makes me like Dejean more, not less.
  21. Durable means he can throw multiple games and multiple innings. Pitchers are likely to get hurt once every few years, it's part of the business.
  22. I think we'll bring in at least one RP and one SP before the team hits Arizona. Dejean isn't high ceiling, but he's durable and a groundball guy. I'd have no problems with his return.
  23. I think he's a #4 starter on most teams and a #5 starter on some teams. There's not a team in baseball with 3 better SP's than Suppan, never mind 4. Simply put, that's just an untrue statement. He was in the Cards' postseason rotation, but is a #4/5 SP? He has had a lower than league average ERA almost every year the past 5 years, and he's a #4/5 SP? Oof.
  24. The Yankees are displaying some interest in free agents Joel Pineiro and Chris Reitsma. It's unclear whether Pineiro would prefer to start or reliever. The Yankees would see him as a swingman, whereas others, such as the Cardinals or Twins, could pencil him right into the rotation. Also believed to be interested are the Red Sox, Pirates and Royals. Let's see the Yankees, Twins, Cards, and Red Sox are all after Joel Pineiro, who has been horrible since 2003 ended, and we shouldn't have any interest in Jeff Suppan? Heh.
  25. I can only hope we have "too many" quality starting pitchers...yeah, who would ever want to acquire pitching in a trade?
