  1. The Twins have traded a young guy once, and considering how that Garza/Young swap went, won't do it again soon. However, they have many AAA arms, and even an overpaid utility INF in Punto they'd give anything to have someone take that deal off their hands, and might just happily let a quality youngster go if the Crew took Nick.
  2. Just got our new freezer home, and it was plugged in, so it is cold. However, our neighbor (whose truck we used), who is a plumber and electrician, told us most people wait to plug it in, though he really was not sure why exactly. He said he assumed it had something to do with it not supposed to be "tipped" on its side (let everything "settle"), but we did not tip it. So, wait or plug it in?
  3. Without a doubt, I'd much rather attend games now for $1-5 than games in June for $10-15. As many of us long for the days of County Stadium and walking up at 7 and paying $8 for a prime seat, and no sign of the people who wonder why they don't pitch out when the runner keeps going on 3-2 pitches.
  4. Hardy had a down year, but still has plenty of value, especially considering teams still trot guys like Betancourt, Punto, Cabrera, and the like out as an everyday SS. You can find plenty of guys just like JJ that have good career numbers, and took a dip in '09...that happens every season, take a look at career stats, and they are up and down. Cuddyer had a down '08, Hinske had a down '07, etc. Their value goes down a bit, but for the most part, they have enough of a track record to "lock in" a majority of their worth. Several GM's will even look to "buy low", as JJ will be cheaper than he was last year because of his down '09. I don't see any way the Crew keeps the guy making $5-6M when it is apparent Escobar is ready. Alcides won't hit a whole lot, but he'll slap the ball around and hopefully, improve as the campaign goes on. If Counsell, or another veteran is around to pick up some starts versus tough RHP, it will help set him a bit for success as well.
  5. And, guys tend to hit a lot less when catching...that's yet another reason why catchers don't hit, or very few do. Catch 125 games and see how fresh you are. Casey would probably have below average range at 2B, but half the 2B do. His sure hands would make him plenty passable, while not ideal. Think Mark Loretta, or Loretta at SS a decade ago.
  6. If only we could have kept him and got CC. We'd have a $400K CF for next year and no worries except whether he'd be ok or very good.
  7. If only we could have kept him and got CC. We'd have a $400K CF for next year and no worries except whether he'd be ok or very good.
  8. We did find one on Craig's List for $50 (down from $150, lady said she did not know new ones were as cheap as they are), as long as it doesn't sell out from under our accepted offer. M2S, where are you located?
  9. Bucholtz, Bard, a solid A ball prospect (think Lawrie or a notch below) and Kotchman would be a starting point in my mind...maybe more, maybe less. I don't know much about their system, but that's what I would say would be a jumping off point for one of the best hitters in the game. One thought I have had, has Hideki Matsui ever played 1B, or could he? He is still a fine hitter and wants to play defense, but most folks see him as a DH.
  10. Robert, I have to wonder what you feel will be gained by a handful of AB's the rest of the way...will they have a better idea what Mat is if he plays 12 games (50 PA's) or 5 games (22 PA's)? Considering he played a lot earlier this year when up, and all year in AAA, I just don't see 28 PA's making a difference. As of now, McGehee's numbers are comparable to Braun and Fielder, which is truly incredible. I do not project him to that level in the future, but he's putting up better major league numbers than Gamel did in AAA. I'm no math major, but that makes the 2010 3B question moot from where I sit. Considering both are very cheap, and McGehee can play 1B/2B/3B (and Gamel has the athletic ability to play 1B/LF/RF), I don't see either one going anywhere...small market teams need to maximize the pre-arby years, not trade a guy and keep someone (Rickie, Corey) who is arby eligible.
  11. If you will have an extra, let me know. If it matters, no box is needed, so if the original box means anything to a collector, you can keep an extra.
  12. Considering TOR would have no chance to sign Fielder long-term, would JP trade 3-4 players for him? I would say no. BAL might, though unlikely. TOR? Can't believe they would even return that call.
  13. I would not say that, as Hudson has very minimal trade value due to his injury. Vazquez is the most likely to go because of his salary. Ankiel got out 70% of the time this year, so he's nothing like Holliday or Bay, who are likely to be retained by their current teams.
  14. I think the fact that Counsell is an outstanding defensive player and Gamel is...not was the reason for that swap. Seriously, if Gamel had been used as a PR and defensive replacement in that situation, I would have questioned whether he had dementia. That move was made for the same reason he brought in Hoffman rather than Axford to pitch the 9th...he's paid to win games, or at least set up the players he has to do so as best he can.
  15. ATL's LF and RF production is among the lowest in the NL...they will add offense.
  16. Davis will probably get 2-3 years, I meant per season salary wise.
  17. LaRussa sure has a lot of solid players (Adam Kennedy the latest) that he's run out of town due to nothing but his inability to get along with people, and then do fine elsewhere. Considering he runs out of pitchers in the 10th often, I don't see any "strategery" that makes up for stupid personnel moves.
  18. Well, that's a risky move to be sure, but Hudson has barely pitched this year. Pronouncing him both healthy and still an ace seems to be more hope than fact. Considering pitching is a high risk area no matter what, I guess that's just off the chart risk for me. You could easily bring in a Doug Davis type and perhaps a returning from an injury guy (Justin D?) as well for $11M. That said, if Hudson returns and pitches well, he will probably outperform the two I mentioned. That's a big "if" for a small market club especially.
  19. Freezer in the garage went out, wondering if anyone knows of a bargain. Just need a 5 or 7 cubic foot model so when we stick iup on chicken breasts, pizza, and the like we have extra space. The best we've seen thus far are at Sam's Club, GE models, $150-190.
  20. Lawrie did almost as well in low A as Adam Jones did a few years ago...that's all-star Adam Jones. I have no idea where Lawrie will be, but Farris will not be a consideration in where Brett ends up. Top prospects go where the organization wants them, and organizational soldiers do not stand in their way. It's not always fair, but that's the way it is. I would guess Huntsville myself.
  21. If teams are in separate divisions, they will not play as much. Tough to have a rivalry if teams barely play. Shorten the season? Contracts have been signed for 5-7 years from now. Economics does not allow for a single decrease in games. Travel time is a real concern, as teams do not perform well when flying all night and get into a city at 6AM, especially if they are playing the Cubs at 1PM on Friday afternoon. If the Yankees are in the same division with the Angels or Mariners, that's a lot of 10PM starts. Meanwhile, for the west coast teams, many games will begin at 4PM...work 'til 5, rush hour, drive home...dinner's on, game's in the 7th. There's a reason teams are separated by geography in every league.
  22. Nonsensical, in my opinion, and also destroys traditional rivalries and creates more travel and more games fans can't watch. I'm not sure what folks mean by a balance problem, unless you are a fan of a team that has been admittedly poorly run (Royals, Nats, Pirates until lately), you've had a decent team to watch of late. TB was the AL champs, and whose at more of a disadvantage than them...no history, no tradition, terrible park, and so on. Even BAL looks to have turned the corner, as they suddenly have a lot of young talent, even in that hellish division, they look to be solid by '11.
  23. I'm always glad no one got hurt in the playoffs, as stats don't even count. I'm shocked Helena is still playing as well.
  24. 1 good year out of 4, more walks in 100 innings this year than in 215 2 years ago. Owed $11M over 2 years. Wow. I can't imagine anyone, outside maybe SD or SEA (extreme pitcher's parks) taking a chance on him, and then, they'd have to rid themselves of a bad contract to bother.
  25. I agree cheap guys have value as middle relievers. I just don't see him as more than that.
