  1. I do not know the Mets' system enough to know who those guys are. Also, no one knows if any deal was actually offered, it could just be conjucture.
  2. Because few SP's are up for trade, and those that are they want gold bars and caviar for. Sherill might be available for a price that's affordable, and if you have to cover 3-4 innings most nights, you need a lot of arms.
  3. None of the offers are even close to what TOR is asking, which, as Tom H points out, is 3-5 top prospects or pre-arby players. Escobar, Parra, and Lawrie is probably on the light side of what they want. They are looking to break the bank, not get some middling A ball pitcher not in the team's top 10.
  4. Guthrie is part of the O's future, I can't believe he's available. Heether has very limited value as a cheap 2B/3B utility possibility. Gindl and Swindle for Sherrill might be a workable deal, though I'm sure BAL would rather have a young player other than an OF, as they have Jones and Markasis. About a month ago, Jeffress and Swindle might have been a done deal. Trading CV now reminds me of those who wanted to deal Parra a week or two ago. He's talented, cheap, and part of the future. He'll recover and be fine. I should mention I like Swindle as well, and would hate to give him up, as he has shown the ability to be more than a loogy...he's been going 2 innings often in Nashville, and will be an inexpensice cog for ages.
  5. If he's better than Mike Burns, he'd be an upgrade, at least as of today. Guys that can go 6 innings and give up 3 runs do have value.
  6. Meredith has a 6+ ERA since mid-May, pitching half his games in Petco. I like him for a team like BAL, who can wait for him to work things out, but he's no upgrade on Chris Smith, who has put up good numbers despite being abused (as the last guy in the bullpen often does). The Crew has to get through 40 more days before rosters expand and allow for a bigger bullpen. Sherrill is a talented lefty, but he's unlikely to be more than a one inning guy. A guy like Coffey (or McClung before he started a couple games), able to go 2+ frames one day and come back the next and go an inning is what they need, but probably are not available. His '09 splits mirror his career, LH bats can't touch him, RH's about .320/.420. He'd be a nice guy to have, and would probably step in as the favorite to be the '10 closer.
  7. So TOR gives up Roy for a decent young pitcher in Morrow, a middling prospect in Green...Bill Hall, who has negative value, and Triunfel, who I don't know, but better be equal to Hanley Ramirez. Rios has a big contract, but nothing like Wells. Any team in the bigs would be happy to "take on Halladay's contract", to say the least. Hardy would have value to TOR because they could flip him for young talent now or in the offseason, so that is a possibility, though TOR would prefer Doug do the dirty work, I'm sure. There might be something to be said about a Hart for Rios swap, as Corey is just a bit under Alex, but whose contract is far friendly enough to have the Jays preferring Corey, I'm sure. TOR wants 3-5 top prospects/pre-arby players for Halladay. I've seen nothing to lead me to believe they'll take anything less.
  8. Personally, I found it funny both Ash and Dick Groch went to TOR...like they don't know how Halladay pitches.
  9. Lopez's production was heavily dependent on playing half his games in Arizona, so I doubt he'll be much of an upgrade. That said, Gamel playing every day in AAA, and with both McGehee and Counsell hobbled, it is a nice move to add a quality IF to the mix. I'd say it's a fine move for a playoff team, but at this moment, I doubt this is a playoff team. I give Doug credit for picking up a nice player for little cost. As Rotoworld pointed out, Gillespie is limited to LF because of his arm and is unlikely to ever produce LF numbers. He'll have some value while he's cheap, but that's about it. I wonder why the Mets did not make this deal a couple weeks ago, they've been devastated with injuries to their INF. Felipe would have been a perfect fit.
  10. In the offseason teams will deal pitching for JJ. Escobar gives us a SS through 2015, which I believe will coincide with his peak year of 28. Hardy is expensive in '10, and gone soon thereafter. You can't keep all your high priced talent, and they have a very capable, top 10 replacement for JJ.
  11. Ironically, many people still ask if my 13 year-old English cocker spaniel is a springer puppy. With all his gray hair, it's hard to believe, but he still acts like a puppy outside. As for a tearjerker, I dare anyone to watch this tribute of a Milwaukee area Marine killed in Iraq and not cry. Braun and Fielder are fine ballplayers and probably nice guys, but Bobby Warns II is a hero. I've seen it dozens of times, and if you can get past the part where his dad salutes his fallen son, you're a better man than I.
  12. I don't know of anyone who takes the ESPY's remotely seriously.
  13. Salome came out of his suspension fine. While stupid, this has been going on in baseball for decades, and was played for humor in Ball Four. It is astounding these guys can't just take a couple caffeine pills and wash it down with an energy drink, but we talking about immature kids here.
  14. Escobar is still young, and sure looks good at the plate. He may never have a .375 OBP, but he might have a .360 one, and with his defense, that's superb. I would not dream of dealing him, and would hate to deal Gamel either, but as a 3B who might end up at a spot less important on the defensive spectrum, I'd much rather lose him.
  15. I can see it as a comedy, especially making fun of the scouts that are 30 years behind the times, and using phrases like "We're not selling jeans here" and the like. It's a unique story, much like HBO's film about the tobacco takeover, with Jim Garner. I've seen parts of that a dozen times, and always enjoyed it, and I have no interest in that company or smoking.
  16. The Packers outdrew the Crew on the final game of the '08 season about 3 or 4-1. There's no comparison yet. None.
  17. I can't say I'm unhappy with Gerut, anything can happen in 40 AB's. Braun is about 4-his last 40 as well. That's why they call it a small sample. Brad's was small as well, but he looked lost, and when you're a fringe big leaguer at best, you don't get many chances.
  18. Thanks kramnoj, i intend to read it this weekend.
  19. Escobar will be the SS next year, as he'll make almost $10M less than JJ, who'll be traded. Escobar will be a plus defender, but won't be much at the plate...but not much below Hardy this year.
  20. He's 23 and throws hard. I wish we had guys like that. He's been rushed, but he'll be solid for years.
  21. He's played 84 games at 2B and 16 at 3B, so he "can" play there, but as Escobar showed, not all SS can easily play 2B without some growing pains. Defensively, I'd prefer Hall, and Lugo costs even more. I just don't see the upside.
  22. I'm sure BOS would give him away if someone would pay his salary. MIL does not need a SS, and does not need to add payroll. He doesn't even have the ability to play other spots like Hall does.
  23. Am I being too simplistic here that they go out of their way to make a crappy ball for leagues that want to minimize offense. I've never seen a ball that is anything but rock hard for a game or two, and pretty solid for a long time. I played in a league that used "limited flight" balls 15 years ago, and we could never tell the difference.
  24. According to Fangraphs estimate, Bucholtz is worth just about the same as Halladay. It'd take a mega deal to land a young guy like that.
  25. I don't see Hart bringing an ace type, and with Bush and Parra back, a mid-tier guy probably is not much of an upgrade. Also, Huff may well make too much to offer him arby, so draft picks are no sure thing.
