  1. Weeks is still right about average, and still may put it all together for an extended stretch. Many of the replacements mentioned are barely better, and have no ceiling. I like Rickie better than almost any available 2B...my exceptions may be Hardy or Kelly Johnson.
  2. I don't see Roberts as enough of an upgrade over Weeks. Mora is old and injury prone. Yes, he's a better 3B than what they have now, and that'd be great if he were a free agent. Sherill is a nice reliever. Prince is an all-star who has 3 years left before free agency. That's a very weak package for a young power hitter, as those rarely are dealt at all. After '09, they'd have Sherill and some draft picks. Prince is worth a lot more than Sexson was. If a trade is made, names like Phil Hughes will be mentioned, not guys a decade older than Fielder.
  3. It's far from a good one though, and Mora and Roberts are stopgaps. Prince has 3 years left before free agency, I don't see them in a hurry to trade him. And, needless to say I could care little how Hatteberg did in 52 AB's last year. He's a nice bench guy, and I'd just as soon go with him as Nelson or Lamb. Again, if you lose 40 runs at 1B, I'm not sure where you expect to make them up...Beltre was 25 runs better than the 2008 3B production, and he'd cost $12M. You just can't lose 40 runs and make it up 5 at a time.
  4. Maybe for $1M. Again, he's a loss of several wins. It's hard to imagine making that up elsewhere.
  5. According to market people on CNBC, the people selling are fraidy cats, and the "pros" are buying on the dips. Unless your time frame is within a year or two (and no you should not in the market anyway), 9500 seems like a great time to get in. In 10-20 years, you got a huge discount from 6-12 months ago. I'd buy 20% now, and keep investing when it has a bad day. There's no such thing as a floor, but given some companies are selling at 3 times earnings, it's time to bargain hunt. I don't see XOM or WMT hurting an iota more than they were a week ago(it's easy to argue WMT is helped), and both are off $5 with the market. I'm no market timer, but if you are, time to start dipping your toes in.
  6. He's arby eligible, so he's going to get paid. He was unhittable in September, and scouts were all over those games...I was hoping he'd sign a minor league deal, but he simply outperformed that.
  7. No doubt Brad is a 3-5 win decline from Prince offensively. That switch alone would probably lower the Crew from 7th in runs scored to 10th or 11th. Nothing fans hate more than losing 3-2 and 2-1 either. With solid options like Hatteberg available for nothing, Nelson is unlikely to be an option for a team that won 90 games last year.
  8. Coco's career numbers are almost identical to Weeks' down 2008. Rickie has more OBP skills and more pop. Coco might be a decent stopgap in CF, but he's a defensive whiz and a mediocre at best hitter.
  9. Depends how much JJ likes it in MIL. If you give him a long-term deal, explaining to him Escobar will be taking over at SS, he may accept it, or he may not. If he wants to play SS, he will choose to be a FA in two years.
  10. They seem to be going hard after anyone they want to return. I would guess they have offers out to 2-3 more, and then will focus on who else is out there.
  11. Me and you are a group of 2 on the 2B move, Joe. I agree for the reasons you noted, and simply put, 3B hit more than 2B's. Moving JJ to a spot where he is slightly above average doesn't seem like a way of improving the team. As for the arm, Rickie has made several great throws over the years, they are probably 4 of his 5 top plays...I recall an outstanding relay to 3B to get a runner and a play this year when he nabbed a runner at 2B on an overthrow at first or an error. A great arm plays anywhere, even 1B.
  12. I see Salome, Escobar, and Salome all starting Heh, Salome at 3B might be very entertaining.
  13. 12.5 months later. I wonder if I recalled that somehow, or not. I really don't think I've ever noticed how big and generic the Rays is.
  14. In arby, Shouse won't get over $1.8M, and maybe quite a bit less. I doubt they sign him for over a year, as he is 40.
  15. I've never noticed how plain the Rays uniforms are. Looks like Ray's bar has a softball team.
  16. Very rare for a team to take a lower ceiling guy like Bateman in the rule 5. It's happened, but I think the Crew will take that chance...there will be better options on waivers.
  17. I see Salome, Escobar, and Gamel all starting, anything less would be a blow to the system. Alcides by '10 at the latest, Mat and Angel by '11. Cain's a ways off, but he might start. Green looks to start as a reserve, and hopefully develop into a starter. Ditto for Lucroy. Gillespie is 25 next year, I don't see him as a starter. Maybe a platoon guy at some point. Jeffress has a ton of talent, if he stays healthy and out of trouble, he might well be up by mid '10. He might never make it. Pitchers are tough to judge.
  18. Cain would be the easiest guy to keep on a 25 man all year; PR, PH, play defense. Tough to keep anything but an elite pitcher up all year, a hard thrower with high ceiling is about it, and those guys are rarely left unprotected.
  19. The Brewers will not offer arby to Gagne, but they can sign him prior to the arby deadline for any amount. Peavey is correct. With luck, maybe a team will sign him before the arby deadline, to a 1y/$2M deal, as they won't lose a pick, but the Crew gain one. I have friends that know Shouse, and they expect him back.
  20. 4th OF's should be mediocre, if they're better than that, they want to play everyday.
  21. Actually, I said I saw a capsule that said he projected as a major league reserve...which as I've pointed out numerous times, would be a fantastic return for a pick at his level. And to be honest, BA's latest end of the year review said he was very weak on defense except for throwing...that would hint he is unlikely to be looked at as a starter, at least until he improves.
  22. If Doug does not return, that's his choice, MA said that yesterday.
  23. I can't imagine Brad being picked up at the end of March and making a 25 man, except for a terrible team with no LH pop at all.
