  1. Hank had 2 weeks that made his season stats go from below average to very good. He won't be available, or is very unlikely to be.
  2. Parra and Seth will be the long men, and considering the quick hook Dale had today, better be ready to go.
  3. Counsell makes that argument seem ridiculous. Guys that walk do so because they take balls, not because the pitcher is afraid to pitch to them.
  4. I've heard paintballs hurt a lot regardless...I've seen softball size bruises on people.
  5. He hasn't collapsed yet, but you may be right at some point, Joe. His ERA was right on his career norms, except for the few starts he pitched injured before the all-star break. You'll see teams make similar deals on SP's this offseason, I'm sure. His deal has 2 years left, so it's far from crippling. Some small market teams would not have interest because they can't afford him, but plenty of teams would take him if he were waived...that's limited value, but far from negative. The risk with Jeff is what happens if he declines. Of course, that risk exists with any long-term deal.
  6. Since Sizemore is in CF, I assume he'll make the bigs long before Grady is done...Mike's not done switching yet.
  7. Suppan still is nowhere near overpaid. Those who fail to see that would be the first ones to complain if they struggled to find guys to fill out the rotation each year. Lohse's numbers gotta be close to Jeff's. Carlos Silva? Padilla? That's what guys make now...you can hope Zach Jackson or Mark DiFelice will step up for $400K and not suck, but that's not a playoff plan, that's just hoping not to only win 70.
  8. I'm sure lots of folks just want to get in and make a day of it, so to speak. You can tailgate any time (you can do that without a game!), I'm sure a lot of photos will be taken today and a lot of souvenirs purchased. Heck, I bet most people will even buy ballpark food, rather than bringing in subs or snacks from home.
  9. Yep, Jack Z basically says since so few guys can hit for power, throw hard (and throw LH hard); that's what they look for. Again, most of the dissent is just cliches, it's the big things that win games. Teams that score a lot of runs and prevent their opponent from scoring win a lot more games than those that bunt at an above average clip. I loved it last night when BOS led off with a double in the 9th, Youkilis made no attempt to hit behind the runner, and made a 5-3 out. Drew followed with a HR hit about 450 feet...that's major league baseball. I'll take that any day of the week. Note that BOS also played with their 1B (granted a former 3B) at 3B and a career CF at 1B, and never batted an eye. Of course, no one will even discuss this, because it is not the story the old, failing media wants to tell.
  10. Ryan is so good in LF, I doubt they move him. He might be willing to do so for the good of the team, but only for a big improvement.
  11. Nelson can't play CF, so he would not be the 4th OF (which is semantics, I realize), but as long as Kapler returns, he doesn't need to. Considering that 5th OF is unlikely to play much at all other than PHing and an occasional start in LF or RF once every couple weeks. Nelson is cheap and hits LH, so he's got a couple things going for him. It's also nice he can play 1B. He's also got the build that could make him popular if he's able to hit at all. I don't see him ever being more than a reserve, but I suppose anything is possible.
  12. If they sign a FA SP, for example, they may not be able to pay Mike $10M, though he may be happy to tear that up and play for $5-7M, or maybe he wants to maximize his salary, that's up to him. However, on the merits of his play, you're certainly not going to improve CF much. I have to believe replacing him with Gwynn would have cost the Brewers more wins than the 3B group did below a guy like Beltre.
  13. Brantley is the same age as a guy who just got drafted. As well as he knows the strike zone, it seems likely the power will come. If he were still with the Crew, I'd hope he hit 30 doubles and 10 homers...with his speed, that seems reasonable. 15-20 is aggressive, but is possible. If he were 5-7 and skinny, no, but it just depends on his growth...how big was/is his dad.
  14. That was a near perfect signing. Signing him long-term now, after his health has been spotty, would be shortsighted. History usually repeats itself. Ignoring the past is not a recipe for success. Hope is not a plan.
  15. I don't really think there's much debate. No one thinks he's a great guy bad things just keep happening to. The levels of dislike just vary.
  16. Unless Kapler goes elsewhere, I'd just as soon the other OF reserve be LH as well.
  17. If you realize he's going to be healthy for about 40 games and pay him accordingly, he'd be fine. Somehow, I doubt many would like that, however.
  18. If you ignore all the blood evidence, OJ was still as guilty as the day is long. I still recall Bill Maher saying, "Jeesh, it's a 10 minute Columbo episode".
  19. OJ Simpson...13 years to the day after a dozen jurors ignored DNA evidence as scientific babble, found guilty of being a bad, bad man in Vegas. Unless somehow overturned on appeal, he is unlikely to ever be a free man again.
  20. Jonny, the enviromentalists must have been furious.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. You win a lot of games with HR's. The difference between most AAA vets and the big leaguers is SLG.
  22. The band members on here have openly discussed hazing, though I do not recall if it involved booze or gender inappropriate stuff. That stuff went out with b&w TV. It's now harassment or assault, and has no place in a campus sponsored organization. Good for the UW to try and end this once and for all.
  23. He's that good and years away from his peak. His ceiling is about as high as anyone in the game. And you know what...this is the first year he's hit much.
  24. I just did a post at Ramblings which magically replaced our 3B group with Beltre's career road production (which is far better than his overall numbers, by the way). Adding him alone bumps the team to the upper third in the NL in run production. Meanwhile, a guy like Mark Loretta would actually decrease what the '08 guys accomplished, even though his OBP is nice, his SLG is horrible...Hall and Branyan hit a lot of HR's, even though they had warts. Also, Dejesus, who I like mind you, does not compare favorably to either Cameron or Weeks (CF or leadoff). You can argue that Dave at $5M is better than Mike at $10M (I may side with the Dave folks, to be honest, especially as Mike gets another year older), but thinking that Dejesus' would help just by stepping foot on the field is incorrect.
  25. I also like Green, he's a nice player. But, he just seems like a guy who will struggle, as none of his tools stand out. A Loretta type looks to his ceiling, and he seems likely to fall short of that and just be a reserve. No big deal, as everyone needs bench guys, especially cheap ones, but it's tough to get excited about that.
