Is Stearns done on position players?
TJseven7 replied to JohnBriggs12's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Don't really agree with how they "framed" that article. Projected WAR in vs actual war out would have held more water. You can project Shaw as a .9 WAR player all you want but he gave MKE -.9 last year. Saying they aren't better than they would have been if they kept all the pieces together is fine and all, but that's also far more expensive than what they have done to this point. Basically, the team can achieve a higher overall WAR in 2020 than it did in 2019 even if the 2019 roster achieves a higher overall WAR than the 2020 team does. Also saying they've shaved payroll isn't the half of it. Their payroll would be quite a bit higher than 2019 if they had kept the 2019 team intact for 2020. -

LHP Urias Yelich Hiura Braun Garcia Cain XXX Pina RHP Cain Yelich Hiura Narvaez Garcia Smoak XXX Urias Don't really see a need for the 3b to be a middle of the order bat. The scary part is that I could see Healy in the 7 hole vs LHP and Sogard leading off vs RHP with Cain in the 7 spot. I don't want to see that. Wilmer Flores getting the exact same deal as Sogard would make me feel a lot better. Correction: Yes we have to add a 3b. I can't see Healy's glove playing at 3b. -

This has nothing to do about the contracts they were paid that year. Once again you are intentionally dodging my point to try to make me look stupid. Let's bring this on home shall we: This started off with: Then you mocked me and moved the ball. Saying we could desperately use his production over Shaw and Arica. No one ever debated that a guy who I called a modest offensive producer was worse or equal to the terrible years MKE suffered through from Shaw and Arcia. After moving the ball you accused me of: No, you attacked me for making a valid point. Then you continued to move the ball again. Talking about him being valuable over Shaw and Arcia. Complaining about the FO whiffing. These were never the topic at hand. The comment again so you can follow along was he's a modest offensive producer. Then you again tried to paint me as stupid because clearly I'm only making my evaluation based on 1 stat. Then I get tossed FWAR number for 3 of the last 4 years. Perfect. His batting grade over the last 4 years has been a +.75 on average. Doesn't that seem like a guy who is a MODEST OFFENSIVE PRODUCER. The only reason he had a positive fWar in 2018 is because somehow a guy who has defensively graded as a -8.2 (never better than -4.5) his 6 other years was a +1.3 on fielding. (mainly at 2b) He was a negative with his bat. No, that's cherry picking. How about the average fielding grade of -9.93 in the 3 years other than 2018 from 2016-2019. You know when I'm supposed to think he's been GOOD. His fWar is driven by 2 things. Positional bump and base stealing, which gets inflated, batting lead off on a bad team. He wouldn't do that on any team that had any hopes of playing winning baseball. Ennder states 1 more year of this production and he'll get 3/40 minimum. Boy I'd love to see some dumb team sign that deal. And here you come to mock me again. And then you throw my Cobb mistake in my face. Here's the point I'm making with the Cobb take. I wanted Cobb badly. I thought he would be great. He started 2018 so freaking bad that I ate it immediately. I fessed up to being a complete idiot on that one. And yet, you still threw it in my face because you want to mock me. Because I don't think Villar is a good offensive player like you do. That's how you settle things here. Not with proof, with belittling people and moving the ball then pointing the finger at them. In 2018 Cobb and Villar were nearly of the same value. Not contact cost you ball mover, value. Explain that. Cobb miserable in 2018, yet Villar is good. They have roughly exact same value in 2018. That doesn't make any sense. While we are at it, Villars 2017 was as worthless as Cobb's 2019 as well. There's 2 of the last 4 years of that good player Villar being right there, neck and neck, with the DUMPSTER FIRE that is Alex Cobb. If a team is dumb enough to sign Villar for 13-15 million dollars. You know Cobb money. They'll feel as stupid as I did about Cobb just as quickly. You know why? Original premise. Villar is a modest offensive producer. In the last 4 years: Offense 3 (Quick go compare him to a -67.7 over the last 4 years or a guy coming off a -18.8) Oddly enough that guy coming off the -18.8 Shaw is a +2.5 over the last 4 years. He's not worth his arby being picked up. Is he good? Is he better than a modest offensive produre? Should he get 13-15 mil per? It's unfortunate he can't steal bases. He gets on base as well as Villar. Base running 19.9 Fielding -28.5 Positional 13.5 When your value as a player is salvaged by the position you play (which he plays at a DH level) and base running you aren't good. When you average +.75 batting over the last 4 years. You are a modest offensive producer. That's what I said all along. You want to twist that and run with it. You want to move the ball and talk about the FO Arcia and Shaw. Go right ahead. But don't start in on me with your insulting garbage when you aren't even talking about what I said. Let's add another set of numbers because we all know I only use 1: That good year he had in 2019 March/April 262/328/730 May 269/325/786 June 225/320/702 But wait here he comes July 298/336/779 AUGUST 333/424/1053 (heck of a month he had that year) And cue the off season Sept/Oct 254/296/703 Quite the "year." Sogard's batting was placed at 8.2 last year. Villar was a 6.5. Why Villar had better fwar... simple. Sogard wasn't allowed to butcher SS and you guessed it, base stealing. That's a 4.5 million dollar Sogard who quite a few felt was a wee bit overpaid. He's just a guy. Right I mean you said "Thinking about the little nerd guy leading off for a contending team makes my stomach uneasy." A guy coming off a 353 OBP season leading off makes your stomach uneasy yet Villar was a 339 and he was a whopping 320 OBP in the 1 hole. How would that make you feel? The correct answer is UNEASY. Which is strange because I've heard he's good. -

Misc. Offseason Brewers Prospect Rankings

I love how the Brewers system is talked about like its garbage. Like in 2016 when pipeline had Peralta 21st and Woodruff 26th. Corbin Burnes was 21st. Harrison was 16th. Like in 2017 when pipeline had Houser 19th and Grisham 11th. By that time Woodruff was 3rd Burnes 5th and Peralta 9th. Like in 2018 when Grisham fell to 19th Ashby clocked in at 18th Houser was up to 16th. This system isn't top heavy with potential stars (you know like Ray who has flopped) but they keep sending talent into the majors. It's almost laughable that they keep calling this system bad. 3 of our starting 6 infielders came out of the farm or were traded for out of the system in the last year. Yelich came from 4 guys out of the farm. 2 starters and possibly 3 bullpen pieces came out of the farm in the last 2.5 years. Our best 2 pitchers are in that group. The scouting department (Hiura aside) hasn't won the first 2 rounds but they've done a great job in rounds 3-15. -

I am as well because he's a pretty interesting case. Like a lot of people on here, I look for players who CHANGED because they significantly changed a few of their metrics. Sogard applies to that. Hard contact and launch angle jumped in 2017. He got off to a torrid start. Then he fell off a cliff and despite those numbers holding constant his results went from incredible to terrible all the way through 2018. 2019 the results were closer to the way he took off in 2017. If you know which guy MKE gets this year you got a crystal ball. I think the risk is there to say that 4.5 mil is a little steep, but if 2017's start and 2019 are closer to the results his new approach delivers 4.5 mil is nothing. I'd feel a lot more comfortable about it with a 4 pack of Urias Flores Sogard and Arcia to fill 3b SS and backup 2b. You'd assume 2 of the 4 should work out or 3 in some sort of platoon.

Thinking about the little nerd guy having any kind of a large role on this team makes me violently ill. First off I'd be stunned if he led off. Cain and Urias should be considerations over him in a lead off platoon. I guess I don't get the venom. I too hope he's the UTL IF option when all is said and done. Maybe he gets spot starts at 2b SS and gets a 33/66 split at 3b. He'd play plenty if that was the case. He'd play 40 more games if he ended up as the 3b starter. Would that be irritating, yes. Would that be more irritating than the reps we saw from Shaw Aguilar Perez Saladino Spangenberg? The answer to that is an easy no. Arcia is coming off an awful season so if Sogard sucked there wouldn't be much difference there either. Until we see it, we don't know what Urias will be. The 3b market is rough. Donaldson and a trade is the only way to get an impact 3b. You really get violently ill over Sogard playing vs a guy like Frasier? Sogard vs Flores Arica? Depth matters when you contend. I'm expecting a 3b to be added, but I for one am glad we don't have to hope and pray on a Shaw rebound or watch SpanSalaPerez. Sogard is better than that. Stearns is quoted as saying he's going for incremental improvements. That's great because we can't forget how many bad starts MKE fielded last year in the infield.

Sogard to Brewers - 1 year, $4.5m w Club Option
TJseven7 replied to JDBrewCrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Reality of the situation can still be a big mistake made by a dumb franchise. His defense is poor, everywhere. He's pulling war by being a lead off guy on a bad team. He's batting lead off despite being a poor OBP guy. Last year he was mediocre if not for a very good July and AS level August. That was his 2nd good "year" in his career. A hot, garbage time, streak. The guy has pulled the vast majority of his supposed value by stealing bases. 102 in his "good" years. Base stealing is currently going the way of the dinosaur in the MLB. Villar is exactly what he's been. He's exactly what Shaw is now. A great flier/cheap option for a going nowhere team that can hope he gets hot for a spell. Pay him, and get ready to regret it quickly. -
Not to down play the other two because they had very good years in AA but I'm very excited about File and Lazar. Lazar because he's embarrassed the competition. File because his pitches move so much he seems to cross the entire strike zone. And he's not joking about that. The slider sweeps the curve ball dives and the FB plays up because he can put it up in the zone and make it look like the curve until it doesn't tumble. One of his past coaches pointed out that he throws multiple pitches and they all look the same at the release. He's just very interesting and he's improved as he's climbed up the ranks. I could see a big start in AA jump him into MLB considerations by the late season. It's not that he has a powerful arm but his movement and the late read hitters get on that movement is very promising. Unlike his slider model, he walks about half as many batters. He just has that vibe of a guy (who isn't even on pipeline) that is going to fly up the ranks and be in the rotation before they can adjust the rankings.
-
Clevinger is one of the few guys who'd make me open to moving Hader. I'm so tired of hearing deals where MKE sends an ACE arm for a corner infielder and/or LF. Bullpen multi inning ACE is more valuable on the spectrum than any of those positions.
-
Urias happened because we got a "sell high" point on Grisham who exploded. Lauer's control took a very solid dependable 2 years of Davies. Narvaez took the comp pick and Hill. You don't get a lot of shots to pull those moves. DS hit multiples in one off season. He hits 3 every year on top of the draft and it's going to go a very long way. I also think the farm is much more interesting that MKE's farm rank points out. MKE has raced guys to the majors. Hiura, Peralta, Burnes and Grisham (Urias) could still be in the farm if MKE wasn't as aggressive as they are at moving up guys who are succeeding. You look back on recent drafts and how some of the advanced age arms are producing and you realize there could be a few guys in MKE or knocking on the door by years end. Most don't profile as top 2 options but 3s through 5s galore. They have a ton of OF prospects that are athletic freaks who could blow up just like Harrison or Grisham any year. There's quite a bit of cost controlled talent in this system. (MiLB and MLB) Throwing 3 more into that fray this year was a big boost.

He was a guy that was on my radar but after adding Anderson and Lindblom the appeal has lessened much like with Gio. I still want 2 more SP options but I'm hoping for 2 guys who slide through the cracks. Hopefully Walker and Hill. -

Narvaez Pina Smoak Braun Hiura Sogard Urias Arcia XXX Sogard Yelich Garcia Cain Braun Gamel/Broxton Is a strong group. I'm extremely excited about the upside of Urias and I can't believe we got him for a corner OF. Another solid addition at 3b will cap off a very good offense. The thing I like most about it is that I can't find a lot of bad ABs in that group. This group could wear arms out. Every single batter (save Arica) keeps Ks in check and takes their walks. It just looks like a very disciplined group. Stashing Healy, Nottingham, Broxton/Gamel, Taylor and Matthias in AAA is a really good spread of emergency options. Woodruff Anderson Houser Linblom Knebel Hader Peralta Suter Black Leaves me wanting 2 SPs and 2 RPs but the makings are there for a very solid staff. DS being tight with his values has left money to keep adding. If MKE can start Lauer Burnes Supak Brown Jankins in AAA they are very very deep. The AAA pen is a heck of a list. Claudio Feyeriesen Perdomo Wahl Williams Yardley Barker QTC There will be options for the MLB shuttle in that group. This team is getting insanely deep. -
I'd be most irritated by the inclusion of File as far as what MKE sends out. I've lost hope for Ray but I'd still expect MKE to hold him on the 40 until he's out of options. There's zero reason to give him away and at this point his going price can't be much better than giving him away. As stated above, what is Seattle paying of that Seager contract? 75%? Seager is fine but he's a negative value contract. You don't give up prospects to take on junk deals. People tossing in the middle of the pack options for 3b. Don't forget Wilmer Flores.
-
This state supports their teams well but you can't look at 2 mil and nearly 3 mil as the same thing. It's a 50% increase. 1 million less in sales volume is significant and shows the impact of winning that people are pointing to.
