  1. And by 2022 they'll be looking to include a prospect to unload it. Just getting knocked around today I see. It’s okay for Villar to be considered a good player. You’ll survive it. He may not be your cup of tea but the numbers say a different thing. Yeah 2 years playing for a rebuilding Brewers and a MLB flop known as he Oriels. I'd love to see a contender sign him after he plays for a Marlins team that's won 120 games in the past 2 years. Bad defender who is modest offensively and a low OBP "leadoff" hitter who has earned the vast majority of his value from base stealing. He hits for some power and got hot in July and red hot in August! Pay up!
  2. If Smoak had played like he did in 2017 or 2018 last year he would be making $10M+ a year. So the question is just was last year just an off year or did something change. The underlying stat suggests it was just an off year but you can never be sure. This could easily be a nice bargain. I find it strange the professional FOs can be dumb enough to pay guys based on "what have you done for me lately." Haven't analytics pushed them past that at this point?

  4. He's had fWARs of 3.0, 2.0, and 4.0 for three of the last 4 years. So, yeah clearly every 3 years. I think what's making this forum intolerable are the large number of posts with assertions that in 2 minutes can be disproved. Well then he's going to be a hot commodity! Can't wait to see his 15 million dollar AAV deal next year.
  5. I somehow had a very skewed opinion on Smoak. This is basically a lateral move. Smoak has played more, Smoak strikes out less, Smoak isn't a black hole vs LHP. Not bad for 2 mil less this year and 1 mil less overall. Plus the added option of keeping him in 2021 if 2020 proves worth it. Smoak or Thames either works.
  6. If Sogard takes the role I wanted Holt in that still leaves Thames Flores Hill Walker McHugh Cishek to go. Replace Thames with Smoak. Different path to the same results.
  7. The Brewers do not need anyone who is a modest offensive producer who'll top 150Ks with regular playing time. Modest? The Brewers could’ve desperately used the production Villar had last season and I’m not even sure that’s debatable. Between Shaw and Arcia, there just wasn’t enough. Villar is a modest offensive producer. Comparing him to Shaw and Arcia doesn't make him better. Pointing at 1 of his 2 very good years in the last 4 doesn't change the body of his work to above modest.
  8. First of, Fansided has a lot of click bait, no facts included, crap quote laden material on it. Second off. You think throwing 100 million dollars extra onto this team would make it better? Keep Grandal, then adding Strasburg MadBum and Rendon would make this team better in 2020? Get out! Really? No kidding. That's also not possible. It's also not like this team is operating on an 60-80 mil payroll. Those days appear to be gone until a rebuild hits. This team is spending very aggressively for their market and the owner needs to get his due respect for that. There are far worse and there are teams far more lucrative than MKE. They're in the middle, and supposed to be. The path to this team winning a WS is not through spending. The path to a WS for this team is through Woodruff, Hiura, Burnes, Urias, Peralta, Narvaez, Houser, Lauer, Rasmussen, Ashby, Small and Kelly. Contracts that have the ability to WELL EXCEED their price tag. If you look at MKE and say, "they need to spend" you clearly don't get it. They need to gather up MLB players who are controlled who have a chance to exceed their price tag. Adding Urias, Lauer and Narvaez is the ONLY way MKE can accomplish that. People can grumble all they want about Garcia Anderson Lindblom and Sogard not being big enough adds but to acquire enough value to compete for a WS the team needs guys like the 3 young guys they acquired to pop. They need to stack that on top of the good core they have. They need guys like Peralta Burnes Houser to mature well. This team will never have a starting 5 that scares teams. They can't buy it and growing it is very unlikely. They've improved those odds by not including interesting arms in trades (except for Yamamoto). Still, growing it is very hard to do. What they can do is build a very formidable offense. What they can do is put 9 guys in the pen who can shorten a playoff game to 4-5 innings. They got a lot of talent in the pen and frankly the AAA pen looks incredibly interesting. That's not counting Rasmussen Small Ashby or Kelly. That's the path they have to take. Strong O, 2 times through starters, super pen. They've drafted to that, they've traded to that, they've bought towards that. You do what you can with what you have. DS has done that well. They still can add 6 more guys. Everything they added seems to have fit well and it's not like they are sitting on the sidelines letting FA go by. The Sogard and Garcia deals look like they had some competition and decided to make it happen. They could be going about this quite a bit cheaper. It takes a very valuable team to win a WS. That's just the way baseball works. If you can't afford that you have to earn it. That means taking in Anderson and hoping he's 2017 Chacin. That's adding Linblom and hoping he is worth 2x his cost. That's Narvaez Lauer and Urias being worth far more than their controlled prices. Every sport is about 2 things. What value contracts do you have, and what can you spend on top of that. The less you can spend the more value you have to find. DS has opened that door many times this off season and that's the only way they win a title. The Brewers aren't the Yankees or the Red Sox, Dodgers or Cubs. Get over it!
  9. The Brewers do not need anyone who is a modest offensive producer who'll top 150Ks with regular playing time.
  10. Well Anderson doesn't qualify as Wade Miley. They got Wade Miley for nothing. Chacin and Gio were the two they paid around the range of Anderson. If he's between that, he's well worth the 7 mil MKE'll end up paying in 2020.
  11. No, it's the worst fad in all of sports writing. It's not interesting, its quick and arbitrary.
  12. But I don't like revisionist adds. His 2019 doesn't mean much to me. He has a long track record of not being 2019 and he only has 3 years over 90 OPS+. 250/320/660 blah and a career OPS+ 82. He's good at 2b 3b and the rest of his utility summed up as not being bad at other spots. It's not like I've been a Perez advocate either. Useful and 4.5 mil is a different level in MKE. I'm so sick of this SS turnstile we have going on. Trade Escobar before his prime. Trade Segura before his prime. Now we trade Arcia before his prime. Cue up Urias.
  13. Well, I mean, hmmm. When I looked at this roster I saw a need for a guy like Brock Holt at around 4 AAV so I guess this is that? He doesn't strike out. I wanted that. 4.5 sure seems high though. He's had 2 good years and 1 of them he tailed off badly. I think this is the 1st move this off season that I don't quite understand.
  14. Big fan of this Fletcher idea. Very good defense at 3b both years. If he can raise his AVG/OBP a tick, he's lead off man territory. He also doesn't K at all. Cain and Fletcher could be 2 strong defensive high OBP guys that could fit in nicely around the power the roster has in place. In the event Cain doesn't fully rebound, RHP Fletcher Yelich Hiura Thames Garcia Narvaez Cain Urias LHP Cain Yelich Hiura Braun Garcia Urias Pina Fletcher Looks pretty good. I guess we need to trade Lutz for him.
  15. DS didn't sign Hoffman either. Didn't he pay 6 mil for Feliz though? I seem to remember a narrative about CC begging for a true closer option that flamed instantly.
  16. This is a big part of why I like watching DS work. He seems to understand roster flexibility on a level unlike anyone prior to him in MKE. You see a signing like this and aren't wowed by it, but then you look at the depth that they have in AAA at 1b. You look at about 6-7 guys on the 40 man. You quickly see how Healy could be an upgrade that has nothing to do with the active 25. The guy treats options like gold, and utilizes his 40 man roster. I had speculated about adding Thames and a RH power bat in case Braun got hurt at some point. He just added that RH 1b option and it won't require a 25 man spot. That's boy scout preparedness. Frietas as 1 option and is 30. Healy has 3 options and is 28. Truly that's who Healy is here to compete with.
  17. May he pitch enough to gain dual eligibility for 2021
  18. Yup, workmans comp.
  19. The opinion varies from sure I'd match 16/4 to I don' want the bum. That's ridiculous.
  20. That's ridiculous how close that is. 1b AAA Healy AA Spanberger A+ Fry
  21. with an optional assignment, the player remains on his club's 40-man roster. with an outright assignment, he is removed from the 40-man roster. That makes sense then. There are 2 spots on the 40 and another 4-5 that could easily open if Healy replaces Freitas and/or Rodriguez.
  22. I was wondering who fit in at 1b in SA. He'd make sense there.
  23. I'm ok with this with 2 conditions. 1) He is basically free 2) He is the 3rd string 1b and backup 3b. Or less. PS: What is the difference between an outright and optional assignment? 40 man?
  24. I'd rather try him at 1b than 3b.
  25. I'll be pretty irritated if Garcia ends up in LF and CF. He is an obvious play in RF with Cain and Yelich making 2 positions very strong. Braun at LF and 1b. Clearly.
