  1. Guess Mitchell needed some ABs in AAA! 😃
  2. Crow pitched last night for Nashville, McGee on the 2nd Rodriguez on the 1st. Gasser and Henderson on full rest. Probably one of those 2
  3. What if Made and Pena already turned down their overtures? In fact, entirely plausible, how would that cut against your theory? You have also overlooked the relevant fact that the Brewers intentionally seek out up the middle players because of their versatility to move to other spots. For example Turang mostly played SS in the minors but has appeared there just 25 times in the majors out of 400+ games.
  4. Max Kepler got 10 million dollars last winter, and Carlos Santana got 12 million dollars. Adolis Garcia got 10 million this winter. When non-difference making free agents are making 10-12 million per year, is there a downside to a team paying more up front to secure a couple of club option years on a player they really like and have high expectations for?
  5. Yeah you might be right. There is probably not enough information to be more than anecdotal if you come out ahead going year to year and without getting a mega-deal. For example, Pratt with his draft bonus and the numbers in the proposed extension will have nearly as much guaranteed money as Rhys Hoskins has made to date without having taken a swing.
  6. It’s not about being driven by ego or hitting massive cash. Rather it is opportunity that is fleeting. If you had a physical skill that you could use to earn obscene amounts of money but said physical skill will almost certainly and permanently erode somewhere before 40, wouldn’t you seize the opportunities to make as much as possible before that day arrives? I am more surprised there are American born players who already got one major payday when they were drafted who are willing to potentially leave some money on the table by taking these early extensions.
  7. That’s really built on a lot of assumptions. First of all, I think it’s part of the GM’s core job duties to identify what premium players they have where there is potential surplus value in extending them. Some players, like Contreras, aren’t interested in delaying their free agency and likewise the Brewers aren’t interested in market rate extensions where there is no surplus value. Frelick is not eligible for free agency until he is going to be 30. With his profile is there going to be surplus value in his age 30, 31 seasons to make an extension worthwhile? I think it’s also more likely that major league players like Joey Ortiz are motivated to play hard to keep those guaranteed contracts coming in the future and the club they perform for is largely irrelevant. It’s one of the main cliches players use “If I play well these things take care of themselves”. Made and Pena likely will look at Chourio and Pratt and be motivated to position themselves to get that kind of guarantee for themselves. or even look at Contreras and be motivated to get to the majors as soon as possible then mark their free agency date on their calendars. The final reality is the players are a pretty large brotherhood, and there may be private jealousies, but they all recognize that an increasing number of players who have yet to debut in the majors signing guarantees for 50+ million dollars is good for the brotherhood.
  8. Fine. But if you think the Brewers gave up too early on Joey Wiemer or he is likely to be more than a journeyman over 20% of the league disagrees with you.
  9. A Joey Wiemer reference? Holy cow. You realize he’s on his 5th different organization since the Brewers “ran him out of town”? Thats more telling than 3 big games in late March.
  10. I think I would say his game is his game at this point (27+ years old, 6 years pro experience and 4+ years service time). The swing and miss in his game isn’t likely to be corrected with more experience against minor league pitching. And yes he is running out of time. Had he been an unheralded draft pick instead of a first round bonus baby they likely would have cut him loose already due to his inability to stay healthy.
  11. Ha! When will he be a finished product then? When he’s 30?, 31? after he reaches free agency? Sheesh. Injuries damaged his career, no doubt about it. Tough break for him and the Brewers. However already turning 28 this season, and in his arbitration years, Mitchell is in no way shape or form any sort of prospect with things yet to learn in the minor leagues. Viewed from that context he absolutely is what he is at this point. That being said, the bar is set quite low offensively in CF. Play the guy who was a first round pick and may still have some upside. Who knows, maybe they’ll get lucky and he’ll cut his K rate down to something close to 25% and they’ll have a serviceable player for a couple years.
  12. Woodruff had a capsular tear an injury that is often the beginning to the end of careers; Jimmy Nelson, Johan Santana, Mark Prior etc. That he’s back and getting outs with diminished velocity speaks to his skill as a pitcher and the effort he put into his recovery which is a lot less certain than those recovering from the much more predictable Tommy John surgery. Given his effort, and ability to learn to pitch without overwhelming stuff, I hope the Brewers keep him around for as long as he’s willing, because those are the exact kind of traits you want to rub off on all their young arms.
  13. What’s the relevance? Pratt is 21 years old and was in high school 3 years ago. Garret Mitchell is 27 and turned pro 6 years ago after 3 years of college ball at UCLA.
  14. I didn’t say give up on him or release him. But more importantly these are his “peak” seasons physically. In that case what is to be gained by optioning him to the minor leagues? I think the fact he has been injured as much as he has allows folks to lose sight of the fact he is going to be 28 before the season is over and will be heading into his penultimate season of team control. He’s kind of a finished product at this point: toolsy with speed and power (as reflected by the metrics) but with Hiura-esque swing and miss issues.
  15. He’s already in his arbitration years, what’s the point in sending him to AAA to work on his game. It’s not like he is some young uber prospect. He’s a toolsy guy who never put it together, MLB is littered with them
  16. Tolle (MLB Top 100/#17) and Early (#54). For whatever reason (maybe they were never really enamored with Harrison but needed to move Devers quickly, but his contract limited the suitors and their offers, so they simply took the best controllable talent the Giants were willing to part with) Boston seemingly was not very high on Harrison despite trading for him, and I really don’t think the Red Sox front office will lose sleep if he emerges as a reliable front end starter in Milwaukee, or if Durbin is a complete bust.
  17. What do you call an SP with 38 career stats who was probably no higher than maybe 7th on the Boston depth chart? That the Brewers liked him, doesn’t make the other not true.
  18. Harrison could be a key contributor for the Brewers. BUT that doesn’t mean he was more than spare parts in Boston or part of their future. Look at the facts. Harrison was in the Giants rotation for more than a whole season when he was traded. The Red Sox then immediately sent him to AAA and he stayed there until September while Boston used 11 different pitchers to start a game between when he was acquired on 6/15/25 and when he ultimately debuted for Boston on 9/10/25. When the season ended the Red Sox added Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez and Johan Oviedo to Crochet and Bello. They have 2 Top 100 prospects in Early and Tolle ready for the majors. So yeah, Harrison spare parts and the text book definition of a guy who obviously was not without value but was not a key player in Boston nor seemingly in their immediate future plans.
  19. They gave up spare parts that were not in their future plans to get Durbin, Monasterio a comp pick and Seigler. I’m sure they’ll be okay with the deal even if Durbin doesn’t play well this year.
  20. While nothing must’ve jumped off the page on Matos’s scouting report, he does come from the Giants, one of the worst organizations at developing talent, so odds are pretty good there just might be some untapped potential in Matos.
  21. The point remains extensions like these only work out for the team if the subsequent performance warrants the team exercising the club options. It was with Peralta. I’m positive when Ashby was given an extension he was viewed as a starter long term and that hasn’t worked out, This front office doesn’t spend money in the bullpen. So it’s unlikely they’re going to exercise their club options on Ashby at 11 AAV. It’s market rate for a high end reliever especially one who doesn’t close.
  22. Devin Williams has multiple all star appearances, was ROY, and has 2 reliever of the year awards and is making 13.5 million a year. Unless he becomes a starter or a closer Ashby’s club options of 11 million AAV are top of the market for a reliever. That doesn’t equal lots of trade value.
  23. I think the odds this contract ends up being a bargain for the Brewers is slim. It likely only ends up being a win if the player’s performance warrants the club options at the end being picked up. Peralta’s extension was great. Ashby’s has not been, and his 2 club options worth 22 million dollars (as a non-closer bullpen arm) almost certainly will be declined. Chourio remains to be seen. But on the other hand when even mediocre free agents are getting 10+ million AAV, it’s a better gamble on a kid with upside than some veteran band aids.
