  1. The guy is an enigma, plain and simple. He's a RHH who can't touch lefties, strikes out at an astronomical, excess Rob Deer-like rate and plays defense about as well as I do with my 42-year-old body and bad knee. Maybe we need to accept that, while he maybe was a little mismanaged last year, perhaps he's also simply not very good.
  2. Right ... it takes two to tango, and every other team in the majors has seen Keston put up three seasons of pretty terrible ABs now. But all it takes is one team who believes they can fix him I suppose.
  3. The fact that Hiura hasn't been dumped yet may be an indication that they consider him part of their future plans. I can't imagine his leash is very long, though. He has no more option years left, and simply cannot continue to K at a 40+% clip if he ever wants to be a major league contributor.

  5. Agreed. But his 21% K rate was at least demonstrably better. And he wasn't a complete embarrassment when tossed in the OF.
  6. This is pretty much why I want him gone. There are flashes that make me think that he might turn into something, then he proceeds to K 10 times in the next 4 games. Enigma.
  7. Like I said earlier, the guy is the square peg in the round hole of this roster. He simply doesn't fit. You can't platoon him with Rowdy because both suck against lefties. You can't play him at 2B because he's a terrible defender. You can pencil him in at DH against righties. But be prepared for at least 2 Ks per game at least. I suppose if you subscribe to the idea that Ks don't matter, that's fine. But when the rest of the lineup has all-or-nothing guys as well, throwing another on the pile isn't going to help.
  8. Me too. Seems like a good guy. It just ain't working here. Watching his approach at the plate makes me ill. I was once a HUGE Hiura fan. I thought he was going to be a perennial .300+, 30 HR guy. But the whiff rate was concerning even as a rookie, and it has just continued getting worse, to the point where it simply isn't sustainable to have him in a lineup everyday.
  9. He was pulled because he was basically a K waiting to happen. That doesn't help in the late innings.
  10. I agree he probably should have played more than he did at times. But as pointed out earlier, when they did finally decide to use him as a regular, he was trash. The guy is an enigma. Those types are difficult to work with. That's Why I'd be very surprised to see him back. Counsell gave every indication that he just wanted the guy gone. Square peg, round hole with this roster. And the "mashing righties" thing is kind of a misnomer.
  11. It is almost assuredly the K rate. Striking out at that rate simply doesn't equate to a player who can be a positive member of a lineup full time over a whole season.
  12. Hiura had a few hot stretches that propped up his OPS. Otherwise he was a dumpster fire.
  13. I think that the Brewers likely found Hiura's 42% K rate inexcusable as well.
  14. Whether you think it was reasonable or not, they paid McCutcheon to be the DH last year. Hard to blame them for continuing to seek a return on that investment. Honestly, as a fan, Hiura ABs are pretty infuriating to watch. It wouldn't surprise me if the team's management and front office had a similar opinion, which would explain the sporadic playing time.
  15. Sorry, a right-handed hitter that cannot play defense and looks like a pitcher hitting against lefties is not going to find a role in most MLB teams lineups. This wasn't a Counsell problem or a front office problem. It was a case of a player who has simply not grown and evolved as a player.
  16. I don't think he has a role on the team. I doubt he makes it to Spring Training as a Brewer.
  17. They have plenty of guys who can play 3B. I'd say if they go that direction, it's more a luxury at this point. Tellez and Adames are about as set as you're going to get at 1B and SS. Urias will likely be starting somewhere, whether its at 2B or 3B. They need to decide whether a bat like Brian Anderson or Justin Turner is a big enough upgrade over Toro/Turang/Brosseau to justify the cost.
  18. What makes Ruiz so much more expendable than Frelick and Mitchell (Wiemer is an outlier as more of a power threat)? Frelick, Mitchell and Ruiz all bring somewhat similar skillsets to the table, and all three can fly, but Ruiz has that calling-card of truly game-altering speed.
  19. Standings never, ever tell the whole story of a season.
  20. Kicking the can down the road is how NFL teams doom themselves. And we are suggesting doing that now, but for a decade or more, and not just a couple years? Nope. There's a reason the Bonilla contract has been a laughingstock for decades. It was stupid then, and there unfortunately is a yearly reminder of that stupidity.
  21. Looks like Turner to the Phillies, according to Passan.
  22. But Adames is a solid to + defender at SS as well.
