  1. Bringing in Andruw Jones would be a great infusion of power to our lineup, but then do you shift Billy to left for the final push, thus, again, cramping an already cramped field of outfielders? Also, I know Andruw is truly spectacular with the bat and is still young by free agent standards, but isn't that a lot to give up for a guy who is still bumping up our payroll $10mil (I believe he's making $18.5mil, cut in half...)?
  2. Just out of curiousity, what would be the asking price for Teahan in everyone's opinion? Villy or Inman? I would have to say that a young, highly-talented middle-of-the-order bat that is also quite cheap...well wouldn't be cheap.
  3. Teahan would be a welcome option, as I was thinking of his acquisition since the end of last year. I just have a hard time imagining the Royals would be open to trading him, as he is young and cheap. I know that Gordon is waiting, but he could easily be shifted to the outfield, or even first, as was the case with Team USA when they also had Ryan Zimmerman. As for Baldelli, I am definitely in the camp that wants to see Rocco in Brew Crew Blue but it would take a bit to make such a transaction, as the Rays are of the opinion, rightfully so, that they are not going to be forced to make room for their young prospects until an overwhelming deal comes along. Both CC and Rocco have very palatable contracts. Also, JJ's value is quite low righ tnow so let's put off trading the gent until he at least brings his career average to .275-.280.
  4. No. You're right. I don't know what I was thinking, as I'm usually critical of such a mistake on others' parts. Nevertheless, Super-Two does make it expensive in the later years, especially with such gifted players as Weeks and Fielder.
  5. I would imagine both would be super-two's and, thus, Weeks will only be the Brewers' prop. until the 2010 season (unless all his missed time comes back to haunt him).
  6. I was making the comp more on their maturity in the minors. I apologize for the misleading statement. Nevertheless, ZachJack, not a year ago, was a few majorleague innings away from where Garza was, and ZJ is a southpaw to boot.
  7. Matt Garza had but one good game as well and he is still lauded as one of the top prospects in baseball.
  8. I think the Rays are taking offers on everyone but Delmon. It would seem that all their MLB-ready prospects and their young cornerstones (outside of Kaz) are all relegated to the outfield. Upton would seem to be the latest casualty, as I have heard his defense is going to force him off the hot corner. What I would love to see with the gent is for him to be turned into what Billy was last year. And, if he would allow for such a delegation, I would quickly trade CV the Younger for his glistening bat. Then again, imagine having him and Rickie attempt to turn the DP (and I'm a RIckie believer...).
  9. Bay Port?? I'm a Redbird. Our Legion teams (DePere) have always been better...
  10. Jr. Griffey to the Giants. The Giants trade....
  11. I have long esposed on that such idea. Perhaps it is more a testament to his utilization by our organization than his own attitude. Nevertheless, I would argue that his value in trade is greater than his realized value, as his best position is filled ably by JJ.
  12. And yet no love for Michael Brantley. The guy could become a truly dominant centerfielder if he puts it all together... And that's why I love prospects. They'll love you, leave you (or their hopes will leave you), and make you cry.
  13. Just thought I'd post a link to some analysis of Morgan Ensberg and what to expect in 2007. You need to be a subscriber, which I'm not, so they could completely bash the Trojan in the body of work, but the title gives me the impression that they project him to be a bargain for what is a loaded crop of hot corner dwellers in the NL. Baseball Prospectus That said, I think it is going to be a very quiet few weeks before reports out of Arizona.
  14. First and foremost, as I stated, I'm not sold on Hall in center, thus I would believe he will be relegated to a corner outfield spot when, and if, Braun makes it to the Keg this year. But I would truly prefer to see him sit in AAA all year, so that is why I would move Billy back to the hot corner, keeping it warm for Israel's finest. Second, the depth at AAA in the outfield is now two centerfield prospects, Nix and Jr. Gwynny. And finally, we hold an option on Jenks which, if he were to put together a full year mirroring his second half of 2005, would make him a supreme bargain. Farfetched, but there's more proof to that than Braun becoming a steady enough defender at the hot corner to justify his immense bat there and not, as you mentioned, in a corner spot in the OF. Our outfield is already cluttered, and the shiniest nugget to potential suitors would have to be the young Jason Campbell wannabe.
  15. While I see your point, I would actually use the 2005 draft as a reason why we would take Wieters if he were to fall, as Ryan Braun was the epitome of a "need" pick. But I can assure you that he won't get past #2, as the Cubs have long been long on adding big names in the draft (Samardzja, Prior).
  16. And more than likely, by jettisoning those pieces, we will almost assuredly be picking up MORE pitching. One need look no further than our neighbors to the south and how they turned two pitchers into four. Quite the magic trick. Perhaps I am a bit short-sighted in my theoretical pursuit of the Padre fodder, but it is far from fodder. And also, I can't help but shake the idea of a certain spot start against the Cards when a young gun went six shutout innings. Chris Saenz... Good times.
  17. First, did anyone think Andrew Miller would be languishing around our pick last year? The year prior, did anyone see Luke Hochevar or Mike Pelfrey slipping? Prior to that year, what about Stephen Drew and Jered Weaver? Top shelf talent is not always picked. That said, there seem to be some decent-sized pocketbooks in front of us. As a side note, I thought I'd post an article on the top young catchers, and they make mention of Matt Wieters, even though he has yet to play a professional game. Top Catchers The most disturbing thing about this article, however, is the complete lack of mention of a certain Grand Salome, as I would take the REAL Pudgito over half those young crackers.
  18. As a side note, I was perusing some websites and found it very interesting that again, there seems to be a bit of ignorance about the future of the Grand Salome. Brew Crew Catcher Bias I find it a bit confusing that they name Matt Wieters, a player who has yet to be drafted, and no Salome. Is it his defense? Is it his stature? I would put Angel up against at least half of these young guns. Then again, I have been guzzling the Kool Aid (and that's not a reference to inebriation).
  19. You have a very narrow view of the ramifications of such a trade. We have more than just CV the Younger waiting in the wings. Also, at some point, we are going to have to trade some piece(s) from the outfield and if I had to ponder a guess, given the values of Mench and Jenks, I would say that Gross is the most likely to go. I only say this because I am more enamored with Corey Hart, and I know that their numbers are quite similar so please don't pose that argument. Corey is and has always figured more prominently in our long term plans. And while I am content with the state of our bullpen, to deny that Linebrink wouldn't be one of the few additions that would further our agenda is without argument. He has a better track record than anyone in front of CoCo. In the end, this argument is wrought with naught as I doubt Rowand will be buying his ticket to Petco, but if it were to come to pass, two upgrades at our biggest questions entering the season (three if you infer that Hall will move back to third) would be worth the youth I would suggest bartering with. Sometime in the near future, the tap to our farm system is going to get clogged with young pitchers, as ZachJack, CV the Younger, and Yo should all be tapping on the knocker at various times throughout the year.
  20. That just made me think of a battery of Will and Angel on the Power... I dunno. Nevertheless, on off days, the 5'7" sparkplug "doubles" (or homers) as a DH. Thus, for all intents and purposes, he pulls double duties on equal ends of the fielding spectrum. Just one of the many reasons why, with the near graduation of Braun, that we are still very well stocked in the future. Gracias, Jack!
  21. As any critic of law can tell you, the only difference is who wrote the opinion. Bryan Smith obviously likes the concensus two more than the scrappy second rounder. Nevertheless, I was verily impressed. And it doesn't hurt that the graphs came from a Brewer fan from, Brew Crew Baller!
  22. Lederer Pitching Article I just thought I'd post this article dealing with two (Kevin Roberts makes three) of our top pitching prospects and why we should all be excited about the prospects of our prospects. He even goes as far as stating that Yo is the best PITCHER (not thrower) in baseball, though not in so many words. Good read.
  23. Well Cameron would slot in a lot better if Hall were moved back to the hot corner and Clark were to be relegated to centerfield. And to say that Linebrink isn't an upgrade is a bit farfetched as no one over the last two-three years has had an ERA lower than his outside of CoCo. And considering what unproven pitching cost at the deadline for the Reds, I would speculate that proven relief would be at an even higher premium. I'm just not sold on Hall in center, and don't really see how Gross fits into our plans long term, especially if there are no at-bats for him. And while giving up young pitching is always hard, so is trading for a dominator of a set-up man.
  24. Well the Padres aren't exactly spilling over with prospects so I think they could be amenable to a prospect+-type deal, especially if they are further depleted by the trade for Rowand. Also, they have some good relievers, which would be one of our more pronounced deficiencies, even if I am still of the opinion that we have surplus relievers (albeit average and unproven at present). Perhaps.... Mike Cameron Scott Linebrink for Gross/Jenks (I would prefer to trade the QB) CV the Younger/Inman (obviously, I prefer to trade the CVtY but Inman may be what it takes to procure two of their top chips) Nevertheless, we would again be taking on money, while trading away young talent, unless we rid ourselves of GJ. But Linebrink has shown himself to be a dominating set-up man and Cameron, as already mentioned, would give us a lesser (and I DO mean lesser) version of our fave trade target, Andruw Jones (who is also five years younger than Cam). I do have to admit, it is a tall price, but they are giving us the NL Central, if we don't have it already. From World Series Champs to late run to finish in third and hold off the surging Pirates, good days are on the horizon in Beer Goggle-ville.
  25. I believe that argument has been going on all offseason. Unfortunately, the Brewers don't have the hype machine that the Yanks have. But the fact that Yo was a 2nd rounder and Hughes and Bailey were firsts would tend to drop Yo outside of the discussion with most analysts, which tends to rub me the wrong way. The one exception would be Nick Adenhart, though I would argue the former twelfth round pick would have been picked in front of Homer had he not had his arm problems (Adenhart would look so good in Brewer pinstripes!).
