  1. ESPECIALLY once you get to the playoffs, IF you get to the playoffs... Exactly. Let last year be the example. They lost out by ONE game and their "rotation" was on fumes. It could have been way worse.
  2. We don't have an ESTABLISHED ace, rather. Nelson pitched like one last year. Here's my thing - if we don't have a TOR ace-type guy, we better have some damn reliable #3s throughout the entire rotation. Lynn can be one of those, same with Cobb, etc. If you have Darvish you can get away with your #5 being a bit shaky, but a rotation of 3 and 4 guys is playing with fire.
  3. I would say as long as it takes - adding Darvish at whatever value they think is worth will make them better at any time. They probably have offers to all FA pitchers they think they want to sign and none of them will bite until Darvish goes, so I would say they just wait it out and hope he goes with them.
  4. I agree that the need for rotation depth is great, but when you are talking about trading Burnes as part of a package for a pitcher who has been durable and has five years of control, it mitigates that need. Granted injuries to happen, but the cupboard isn't going to be bare of potential MLB starters should one go down, either. For once, I'm actually pretty excited about the potential starting pitching depth this team has. Its high-end pitching where they fall short. There are a bunch of #3 types and a bunch of #5 types. While I get the argument that Archer is just another #3 type, I believe with his stuff and durability, along with a move to the NL, he could very well rise above that. I agree witha ll that and am very pro-Archer - I just think it would be foolish to just throw the Rays everything they want without a little hardball. Even though I'm fine giving up Santana, that doesn't make him a bad player - he's quite valuable! But is a known quantity with a lot of major league success AND your best young pitching prospect PLUS other pieces really a good deal? I'm ok with giving things up, but both Burnes and Santana could be centerpieces of separate deals, I would have a sour taste in my mouth to use two centerpieces in one deal when the return isn't TRULY elite.
  5. ' Some years I would agree, but if you're serious about competing for a title or even the division, you're not taking flyers on average guys unless you absolutely have to. Teams that are rebuilding can afford to do that - and it got us Chase Anderson which is great! And yes, it would be great to strike gold and find a cheap guy that produces like Chase did last year. But when you want to take the next step, you can't afford to grab off the scrapheap and hope for the best. Now is the time to get known quantities like Darvish when you have the resources.
  6. I wouldn't read much about Yu being hesitant about Milwaukee only because the Brewers offer (despite being the rumored highest) isn't close to what he was after going into free agency. If he wants 200 million and there are no offers close to that, he's essentially taking a discount wherever he goes so it makes sense for him to be bullish about where he signs for less than he wants. If the Brewers gave him a 200 million dollar offer and he STILL was hesitant about going to Milwaukee, then I would be concerned.
  7. The one thing about Burnes that I am hesitant to give up on is that he's so close to the major leagues - and that is not an exaggeration. When you get to AA and have major success there, you're basically a call away from the big leagues when your AAA affiliate is Colorado Springs. I can deal with Monte Harrison being traded because even with his strides this year - he's still in his 3rd professional year and hadn't really shown anything but potential. The thing is, even with success he's still 2-3 years away. Burnes could make an impact at the ML level THIS YEAR and in a position of need. Santana is expendable because we know what he is and it comes at a position we are stacked in - I would hate to see guy as close as Burnes be included when we still haven't seen his ceiling and he's very close to the bigs at a spot we need more of.
  8. I think it's clear from HH that this would likely only happen at the deadline - The Mariners hope to contend.
  9. Look at all those names!! Lots of stuff we can speculate on!
  10. I was going to argue that maybe they didn't have a good pitching coach but then I remembered Mike Maddux.
  11. What happened on August 1st 2016?
  12. It's important to establish that HH is sharing news from his source at 9 - not that news is going down AT 9. So if his news is "the Brewers are confident they will get Darvish" that doesn't mean anything is imminent, he's just sharing thoughts from the inside. No actual signings/trades will occur at 9.
  13. I'm hoping for Yu news. Yuews!
  14. I love that you registered to post this.
  15. I imagine Bundy may be available at the deadline for a nice haul if the O's are out of contention - they likely will be in a tough AL East.
  16. I agree that I don't see Santana making sense logically for a team looking to rebuild by trading their only good young SP, but it's the Orioles so my guess is as good as anyone's.
  17. The problem with the O's is pitching is always their problem - couple that with their stubborn "won't rebuild" kind of attitude and they would end up not motivated to trade Bundy. If they DID decide to trade him, I don't know if Santana would be the target - they would likely want young pitchers.
  18. Bundy HAS to be untouchable, right?
  19. If you follow Brewer World consistently (ie not just read the tweets that get mentioned here) you would know without a doubt it is a joke account.
  20. Honestly if all it took were Broxton for Corbin, I feel like it probably could have happened by now. Perhaps the holdup is that Stearns sees Broxton as being a cog in a bigger trade, but I just don't see it.
  21. The more this drags out, I think the more I find myself wanting to sign Yu. Going into the offseason thinking it would be a normal offseason, I probably would have said I didn't want to sign Darvish, but now I think it was more like I thought it wasn't a possibility so I didn't bother thinking about it. Now that it (seems like it) is a possibility, I'm 100% hoping that they get him. Fingers crossed this holdout means that the Brewers have the biggest offer on the table and Darvish is just counting down waiting for someone else to (hopefully not) budge.
  22. No way Highheat, at the very least you give us something to hang our hats on and talk about.
  23. Saying Archer is not an "ace" and merely "a 2" doesn't make me want him any less. How many aces are there at that point? Now how many could we actually get? I'm looking at this rotation, and sure Anderson and Nelson are 2s if they pitch anything like they did last year (spoiler alert, they haven't in past years). Realistically they are maybe 3s if they regress slightly? 4 if they return to what they were. Davies is a 3 or a 4, Chacin is a 4 or a 5. I don't know, but a 2 is looking real good right now.
  24. That's the key I think - everyone wins but the Cubs. Dodgers have payroll flexibility for Darvish and still have a great catcher, we now have two good options behind the dish and are improved, Cubs lose out on Darvish.
  25. They don't necessarily WANT to get rid of him, sure, but I think they'd rather have a guy like Darvish than two top ten catchers. They could likely afford to lose one of them if it means getting a great pitcher.
