  1. Alright so I know I’m biased, but you can’t tell me any of those angles definitively showed JBJ’s fingertips coming off that bag. I guess indisputable video evidence isn’t the standard here?
  2. Yeah, ironic that Contreras came into the game right before this happens. To be clear, I don’t find it suspicious, just deeply ironic.
  3. I went back to look at it. Batter got it off the end of the bat. Super funky for a fly ball. I thought it was on JB at first, too, but I’m not too upset after seeing the replay.
  4. After the ridiculous pitch behind Woodruff, I dogged Manfred and MLB on the next game’s in game thread because I didn’t think they’d actually suspend anyone. I was wrong. Well-done MLB!
  5. Getting Yelich, Cain, and Wong healthy should help a bit. But the good news is that Pittsburgh is next, and in theory, a juggernaut offense should not be required to pick up a couple games. But now I'm thinking about a certain series in Pittsburgh going into the 2018 All Star break...Yeah, so, better keep warming up the bats...
  6. Not since the move to the NL: Fingers and Vuckovich won it back-to-back in the '81 and '82 seasons, respectively. EDIT: Didn't see Underachiever's post above--did not mean to pile on at all (I had forgotten about these Cy Young winners, too, seeing as I wasn't, you know, alive at the time...but my old man tells me of the glory days often)
  7. The other thing that irritates me is that baseball sitting this situation out until a brawl happens practically ensures that a brawl is going to happen, which is exactly what MLB pays lip service about "having no place in the game." You don't want beanball wars? Fine, neither does Counsell, it seems. I am absolutely fine with not engaging in tit for tat beanings, especially after I grew up watching the disgustingly sanctimonious thuggery of LaRussa's Cards. But you can't say this stuff can't continue in our game and then NOT step in when a team one-sidedly escalates the situation while the other does not. And you would think MLB certainly would offer a suspension or two after a player straight up admits in an interview that they threw at a player intentionally. But MLB is an administrative clown show, so of course this ends in blood. That'll be another banner day at the office for you, Manfred.
  8. Some people just need to feel disrespected in order to get up for playing the game. Whatever.
  9. Yeah, it was—they can’t all be one-hitters. Rank our starters however we want, but I’ll take six innings of one run ball any day.
  10. Weird explanation on the lineup card issue. Apparently, they use an “automated system” to handle lineup cards that are supposed to sync to all relevant personnel moves. The auto-populated card went to the umps, while the preferred lineup was on their own hand-created card that they used in the dugout. Obviously, that’s a bit of an oversight. I think one of the coaches is about to be given the job of double checking the computer-generated card from now on. Don’t trust the machines!
  11. By pouring it on and not allowing the Cardinals to come back, I think we are in serious danger of not playing the game The Cardinal Way©. I love it.
  12. *exhale* And there is my reminder to work on my cardiovascular health. 162 games of a contender built to play close games is hazardous to one’s heart. Gotta do more cardio...
  13. This isn't an innings thing, or shouldn't be. There will probably be some starts where he labors and throws 100 pitches in 5 innings. When you are at 74, that is the equivalent of 5 innings in a normal start. He wouldn't have been pulled after 5 innings and 74 pitches so why do it just because he went 7 innings? Doubt the extra couple of innings of warmup pitches were a killer. You do it after 7 and not 5 because you have (in theory, not necessarily practice—ie, Joc’s HR) fresher and more effective bullpen arms to take it the rest of the way. Your A team can cover two or three innings of a tied or close-led game, but probably not 4 such innings. Woody is likely to be counted on for many more high-leverage pitches and innings later in the year than will Freddy, as much as I hope Freddy continues his breakout. Bank some more pitches now for Woodruff, I say. What I DO have a problem with, on the subject of in-game management, and as others have noted, is pigeonholing Hader to the “closer” role. The only thing I can say about it is that Hader seems to like it, and so it may have psychological performance benefits for Hader. But I do not like it analytically at all. I’d prefer a matchup based approach with relievers.
  14. It’s Woody’s second start of a long year after a hugely abbreviated and bizarre season last year. I have no issues with replacing Woodruff there. I’m not sure it is reasonable to expect many guys, including Woodruff, to give 200 innings this season, and I’m down with easing starters into 100-pitch games in April. Tempest in a teapot.
  15. Man, he did it for a $500 payout. I mean, it’s obviously immoral at any price, but he knowingly trafficked drugs from Sinaloa for just some walking around money? Maybe minor league pay really does need to get looked at. But nah, the real problems with baseball are all the beloved traditions and the length of game...
