In the same article, Passan said another possible deal could be Mason Miller to the Brewers for return Josh Adamczewski, Braylon Payne, Bishop Letson, and Sal Frelick. Again seems pretty pricey on the surface. If they swapped Adamczewski with Fischer or Jett and I’d consider it more.

Passan soft predicting Skubal to Brewers. Return Logan Henderson, Josh Adamczewski, Ricki Moneys. A little pricey for me for a rental but it is Skubal. Swap Henderson with one of Gasser/Letson/Hardin and swap Adamczewski with Fischer or Jett and I think I’d do it.

Jett is on the IL with his wrist injury with a timeline of 2-3 weeks. Can you trade prospects who are on the IL?

I realize I sound aggressive saying I’d send Pena and 2 others for Miller, it’s just cause I always assume guys will be a bit more expensive to acquire than I’d originally expect, mainly guys with multiple years of control left. I also know Pena is still ranked high but assume he’s lost a bit of luster this year with his health issues and only 2 HRs in 40 games, maybe prospective trade partners wouldn’t think this though. And the fact I think he’d be blocked in the IF until 2029 (Turang possible trade post 2028) with 2B Turang, SS Pratt and 3B Made until then, so he is imo somewhat expendable. But yes the Brewers do have a ton of depth to trade from and some guys who are ranked around 10-15 in our system would be top 5 in others so maybe could get away without sending Pena for someone like Miller.

Yes but I’d be confident someone would have a better offer than Luis Pena 1 for 1 swap. So once they start having to outbid others and Made becomes a requirement that’s where Padres lose me. But if the requirement to get him was for sure nothing more than Pena plus 2 lower level guys I am sprinting to the phone.

Personally I’d be fine with being cheaper and trading for a mid tier starter such as Mize, Soriano, Gausman, Ray, etc and a nice bullpen arm (but not any of Miller, Chapman or Hader). I don’t think even adding 2 guys like Miller and James Wood would get them over the Dodgers hump still personally.

I’d be confident if Brewers refused to offer anything more than Pena plus 2 other lower ranked guys they would get outbid by someone for Miller. So if they truly want him I think they’d probably have to send Made.

Skubal is the only “top guy” who’s on an expiring contract so wouldn’t cost Made especially since Tigers have no leverage left. But guys like Miller, J. Wood, etc have no reason to be traded by their teams yet with their control remaining. So they can be stingy

Absolutely. No question. But they would want Made so won’t happen

To get any of M. Miller, J. Wood, and maybe even R. Detmers, C. Abrams or E. Perez they’d likely have to send back Made. They won’t do that. To get any of Skubal, J. Soriano, Peralta, Mize, maybe J. Ryan, and others you could likely get away with L. Pena or a slightly lesser prospect as the headliner. My pipe dream was Aroldis Chapman as he wouldn’t have cost Made but now that the Red Sox are contending they won’t trade him. I think they add a mid tier starter, a nice bullpen arm, and that’s it. They just don’t mortgage the future and send out their best prospect. I think we see maybe 2-3 of our top 10 prospects traded but maybe only 1 of the top 6-7 and then a couple others below that. Jett’s injury takes him off the block. I think they trade one of Fischer and Burke as they are both lefty 1B at the MLB level. They will need one next year with Bauers likely gone but don’t need both. Made will be at 3B next year so Fischer wouldn’t be there and likely then limited to 1B. L. Adams could to be dealt this week assuming they plan to bring back Vaughn next year. Quero could be traded if they plan to bring back Bill next year as they also have Dinges. One of the OFers at single A Wilson likely to be dealt imo as they have 4 talented guys pushing for PT there now (Frias, Antunez, Encarnacion, J. Anderson) I could see them selling high on Joey’s recent success and including him in a swap for a 3B but the infield market is pretty barren for impact players so they might keep the offense as is. Abrams has never played 3B, it wouldn’t be an easy transition, and he already plays bad SS defense. Could DH some I suppose. Joey’s defense is invaluable so they might just see it worth it to keep him as the 3B starter. Maybe can add an OF if Sal’s injury will keep him out through August.

Keep in mind there was only 13 rule 5 draft selections last year and 16 the year before. Most teams just bypass it and opt to keep their own guys. Wilken would easily go unpicked if not protected so no worries there. No need to add to 40 man. Adams however in addition to Jett would have good chances to be selected in addition to Spencer M saying C. Wagoner, M. Manfredi, and I believe T. Kuehner as the other 3 he said would be the most likely guys stolen by other teams if not protected. Might see 2-4 of those guys protected by us and added to the 40 man, we’ll see. edit: I misread, there was 13 players selected last year in the major league phase and 55 picks in the AAA phase, 68 total. But still, no need to protect Wilken

Agreed. That swing is butter. He’s got average speed and average at best defense, probably below average arm but he screams future .285 avg, 25 HR, 90 RBI guy to me. Would rather have him over Payne personally despite Payne’s budding power, crazy speed and better defense than JA. Too many Ks is concerning. Payne seems kind of like a poor man’s Garrett Mitchell maybe the Brewers value Payne’s speed and defense over JA’s skillset though due to Brewers recent trends

Yea the timing of Jett’s injury is not ideal as after this year he won’t be a top 100 prospect any longer it’s looking like. Adams has been great this year and not a bad long term MLB 1B option or even early-mid 2027 if Vaughn is traded. Otherwise if Vaughn returns for 2027 and/or is extended then yes Adams is very expendable. Especially as someone who is rule 5 draft eligible this winter and would need to be added to the 40 man if they don’t want him stolen for nothing, cause I think he’d actually get selected by a team. All depends on their plans for Vaughn after this year. Love Wilken but he has no value at this point and would just be a throw in. Is rule 5 eligible but wouldn’t be selected, so can just be kept off the 40 man and brought back to AAA as a depth option and resurgence candidate to then be called up/traded if he regains value. Burke and Fischer are pounding on AAA’s door and will be both be moved up within a month so one of Adams or Wilken would need to be dealt to open up 1B/3B ABs

I’m pretty confident Sal will be dealt sometime between now and offseason after 2027. Wouldn’t mind him returning as 4th OFer in 2027. But I don’t see him as blocking Adamczewski at all. Payne, Ragsdale, Encarnacion, Strosnider, Jones also intriguing OF but I think Adamczewski is the best guy there. Mitchell I think would be kept for 2027 as well but tbd after that. Free agent after 2028 so maybe they get one more year of value then trade him. I doubt they extend him with his injury history unless it’s for pennies. starting 2028 then you can roll with the trio of Chourio/Lara/Adamczewski with the best of Payne/Ragsdale/Encarnacion/Strosnider/Jones that’s still around as 4th OF. With Frias then waiting in the wings assuming he’s not traded.

Jett is out 2-3 weeks with a sprained wrist and assuming you aren’t allowed to trade injured prospects that is NOT ideal. Hes the most expendable prospect they have imo. still don’t want to part with any of Made, Pena, Adamczewski, Fischer or Frias personally

This, if they don’t trade him and pay him his arb money next year like $10 mil he would pair nice with one of Fischer or Burke as the LHB (whichever one isn’t traded). Otherwise since they are likely to lose Bauers you don’t want to trot out 2 rookies as a platoon at 1B (L. Adams and one of Burke/Fischer). But, then you lose him in FA after 2027 for nothing assuming not re-signed, unless you trade him mid-2027

Not worth it imo, maybe in the offseason since he has 1 year of control left before FA and will cost around $10 mil next year. He provides some of the power we already have little of. Type of guy we’d be trying to acquire if we didn’t already have him.

Sal’s trade value has to be low so maybe wait til the offseason to trade him if he turns it on or run it back with him as 4th OF next season

It might not be worth it if there’s no season in 2027. For that reason I’m not sure the Brewers make a splash like that
