  1. That's smart. Preventing runs is more important than scoring them at this point.
  2. It's almost to the point where the Cards have to think about not pitching Flaherty more than an inning or two.
  3. Ok so a 9 run first inning for the Cardinals isn't exactly ideal... honestly, the Braves are like the Cardinals Lite so I wasn't rooting for them either.
  4. I'd break it down into a few different buckets: No-brainer tender: Knebel Davies Guerra Suter No-brainer non-tender: Saladino Perez Club options: Anderson- probably decline option and non-tender Pina- definitely exercise club option Lean toward tender: Nelson Shaw- if the moose mutual option is exercised by both sides I'd work toward trading shaw before the non-tender deadline or move him to the non-tender bucket Gamel- decent back up outfielder, still has an option so keep him around. Arcia Lean toward non-tender: Claudio (3 batter minimum being biggest deterrent, but he does have an option) Spangenberg (if he still has an option I'd move him to the lean toward tender bucket) Austin
  5. I know this gets touched on here and there in other threads, but given the number of arbitration decisions I think a thread is warranted. Every year MLB-TR publishes their arbitration projections. It's just been posted for this year: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/10/mlb-arbitration-salaries-2020.html So what would you like to see the Brewers do with these players using these salary projections as a guideline? December 2 is the non-tender deadline. Chase Anderson – $10.3MM – club option for $8.5MM Jimmy Nelson – $3.7MM Hernan Perez – $3.0MM Corey Knebel – $5.125MM Alex Claudio – $2.2MM Travis Shaw – $4.7MM Manny Pina – $2.2MM – club option for $1.85MM with a $150K buyout Cory Spangenberg – $1.5MM Zach Davies – $5.0MM Junior Guerra – $3.5MM Tyler Saladino – $1.0MM Orlando Arcia – $2.7MM Ben Gamel – $1.6MM Brent Suter – $900K Tyler Austin – $1.2MM
  6. We have a ballpark to be named later, why not keep with the theme and name the LF restaurant the same thing?
  7. Are these guys free agents? Are they going to be posted? The only notable guy i've seen an announcement for is the outfielder Yoshitomo Tsutsugo from Japan.
  8. Game 4 of the NLCS last year deserves to be on the list. The dodgers made some crushing diving catches in the OF. Machado scored the winning run a few innings after the Aguilar incident. The game winnings hit was a 5 hopper through the infield. Game 2 of the NLCS last year too. Blew a 3-0 lead after the 6th inning. bases loaded walk in the 7th. 2 run homer allowed in the 8th. Yelich up with a runner on 2nd to tie/win it in the 9th. Just a crushing loss when they could have gone up 2-0. I think game 7 gets all the attention, but game 2 and 4 was worse. Not to re-litigate the 2018 playoffs, but Jeffress was so bad. Even in his few scoreless outings he couldn't work clean innings. I'm a big Jeffress fan, but I think if the Brewers had abandoned using JJ earlier in the playoffs they would have gone to the world series. I rationalized using him at the time, but looking back I'm feeling worse about it.
  9. I watched some of the scrimmage. Donte did look good. hit a couple threes. Moved really well. Seems to be healthy which is good. I'm heading to the pre season game tonight. I live near the United Center so I figured it was worth the $10 to get in the door. Was hoping to sit in the lower bowl, but those tickets were still $40+ on stub hub which isn't worth it to me for a pre season game.
  10. There were more 3+ year deals in 2017/18. No perfect comps, but could support Grandal getting a 3-4 year deal. I don't think anything prior to 2017/18 is relevant since we saw such a dramatic shift in the free agent market that winter. hosmer 8 years Upton, Cain, Jd Martinez, 5 years Cozart, Santana 3 years. Although the Hosmer and cosart deals look bad. Santana deal looks ok, but he was already traded once. JD Martinez has been great and might opt out. Cain and Upton are sorta TBD, but probably going to be pretty bad in a year or two even if the up front end production was quite good.
  11. Hamels is definitely an interesting target. I definitely though Hamels was washed and I was not all that concerned when the Cubs acquired him last year. He's been very good for them though. Hamels went 6 or more IP in 12 of his 27 starts. No guarantee the brewers would use him the same way as the cubs did, but he at least has the potential to be effective AND work slightly deeper into games at a slightly higher rate than the Brewers typically use their starters.
  12. It really will be interesting to see what Grandal ends up signing for. If we are to believe the mets offer of 4/60mm last winter is accurate then we have a pretty good idea of what the floor is for a deal. (3/$15mm for a longer term deal or 1/$19mm for a 1 year deal) Grandal isn't really a different player than he was last year and he's a year older. I'm skeptical that he far exceeds that mets offer from last year. I think 3/$54 with a club option makes some sense, but only 4 position players received deals at least 3 years long last winter (Harper, Machado, Pollock, and Escobar). Pretty much every other all star caliber player got 2 year deals. So 2/$38 also makes sense to me too.
  13. The Villar/Schoop trade was weird from the start. Schoop was presumably brought in to play mostly at 2b/ss as a right handed side of a platoon or take every day ABs at SS. Well the problem was he didn't actually hit LHP that well and Villar was hitting LHP will in 2018. Like others had said, Villar was basically benched for a few weeks leading up to the trade so it seemed clear that he was just dumped. The Brewers didn't give him a single start at SS in 2018 even though Arcia was horrible. The Brewers didn't view him as a viable defensive option at SS. The Brewers were done with Villar. It was a bad trade. The process around the trade was bad. Only taking into consideration on field production, the Brewers blew this one.
  14. Locks: Woodruff Davies Probable: Houser Option/outgoing free agents/arbitration: Anderson- I think i'd decline the option since I think it's higher than his free agent price so the brewers could save some $$ on that roster spot Lyles- I'd be interested in pursuing him. Realistically, a contract like the one Miley got makes sense. However, with the free agent market being relatively thin for relievers I wonder if some teams might pursue him as a reliever and drive up the price. Gio- I'd be interested in brining him back. I don't think he gets much more than $3mm or so guaranteed. Nelson- I'd lean toward tendering him a contract and seeing what he's like in spring before his contract becomes fully guaranteed. Stearns seemed to dance around the Nelson questions in the season wrap up presser. Pomeranz- if they are able to bring him back it's 99.9% chance as a reliever. F Other internal options: Peralta- I think they should stretch him out as a starter in spring. May end up in the pen and/or shuttle squad Burnes- Same deal as peralta. Suter- I think they should stretch him out, but it would be hard to move him out of the pen role based on that performance in september. Faria- bring him to spring and see if he can earn a spot on the roster in some capacity. Free agent starter I'm most interested in is Wheeler, but I'd guess he's going to be way more expensive than the Brewers will be in the market for. I like Colin McHugh as a swing man type if he's healthy.
  15. I'm visiting my parents this weekend and they have Dish Network. No FS1 on dish right now... can't watch the games through mlb.tv subscription. Luckily i can watch through my xfinity app, but overall dish network annoys me even though i'm not a customer!
  16. I understand the interest (assuming he is healthy). That said, considering the Astros are likely losing GCole via free agency, why would they let a healthy McHugh get away when they need starting pitching? Are you suggesting the Brewers should outbid the Astros to draw him away?? He's just a name I'd be interested in. I think the Astros have 3 pretty sure bets in their rotation for 2020: JV, Greinke, and McCullers. Then they also have a ton of guys who could end up getting starts for them like Josh James, Forrest Whitley, Cionel Perez, Corbin Martin, etc. They probably want one more veteran type arm to complement the young guys and the studs though.
  17. I think a more organized way to discuss the roster going into the off season would be to have a few dedicated threads along the lines of but not limited to: Option decisions Arbitration decisions Outgoing free agents
  18. Collin McHugh from the Astros is an interesting name to keep an eye on. He had elbow issues down the stretch this year, but if he's healthy he sorta fits the Brewers mold. More of a swing man type. Experience in the pen and rotation. Been overall good for a few years now. https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=7531&position=P
  19. I don't know why we get so worked up about who the 5 starters will be. If we've learned anything over the last couple years it's that it's going to take 10 or so guys to make it through the season. I think the better way to look at this is as a full pitching staff. Roster mainstays and shuttle guys.
  20. Win or lose with your best pitcher on the mound. I have no issue with Hader coming in for a 2 inning save. I thought he'd get out of it. Command was bad, but he gave up a couple of schtoinkers too. Probably wasn't going to go back out for the 9th if they had the lead/tie just due to all of the pitches. Terribly disappointing end to the season. No way to sugar coat that, but I don't blame Counsell for riding with Hader. Sometimes your best players get beat.
  21. what would espn care? they don't have the NLDS games and it's football season and the NBA is back in training camp.
  22. Woodruff will probably bat once considering we hit first and his PA would likely be 2nd or 3rd inning...I guess if it's the 3rd maybe he doesn't bat. I wouldn't be overly surprised if he hit 8th today. I'm imagining something like Woodruff for 3ish, Suter for 2, Lyles for 2-3, then Pomeranz/Hader to finish it. That's the dream anyway. I would think Jackson/Claudio will pitch to 1-2 hitters if any of the 3 main guys struggles completing an inning. Ya good point on Woodruff maybe getting 1 PA. If any of the pitchers hit obviously he's the one you're ok with. I'm also interested to see how they use Pomeranz and Hader. I almost feel like you need to have one of them available to get out of a big jam left by another pitcher.
  23. I love the roster. Shows the Brewers' hand a little as to their strategy. I doubt a pitcher bats in this game. I also would expect Lyles to pitch in the game. Anderson is the "long man" in case of emergency.
  24. To me, the most interesting thing will be if Lyles is coming in to pitch after Woodruff. I wouldn't expect Woodruff to go more than 3 innings. In a 1 game, 9 inning elimination game I only want Woodruff, Lyles, Pomeranz, Hader, and Suter. I'd feel ok about Peralta and Guerra in certain situations as well. Probably need either Davies or Anderson on the roster just to protect yourself in case of a long extra inning game. I'd lean Davies even though he'd be on short rest if they need him.
