  1. I'd be a proponent of resting Giannis tonight as well. Like you mentioned, couple guys out for the Grizzlies, Girzzlies are bad, back to back, etc. One of the underrated aspects of Giannis shooting more 3s this year is that's another 3 possessions a game that he isn't crashing into the lane. Slightly less wear and tear. I think he probably plays roughly 70 games again this season and not all of those games missed will be down the stretch.
  2. League average player? His floor is Moustakas and his ceiling is 5+ WAR. Baseball Prospectus: 2017: 3.0 2018: 2.5 2019: 2.2 Baseball Reference: 2017: 2.9 2018: 1.2 2019: 2.4 Fangraphs: 2017:3.5 2018: 1.5 2019: 2.9 He's been about a league average hitter over that time frame propped up by positional adjustment and defense. If we assume 2.0 WAR is a league average player, Seager has been slightly above that. If we take into context that third base is deeper than just about any position in the league right now I think it's completely fair to call him league average. And keep in mind we are talking about age 32, 33, and 34 of Seager. So even if we start him out at a projected 2.5 WAR in 2020, it's probably going down from there. And your point about Moustakas is actually making my argument for me. the Brewers didn't want to lock themselves into a multi year contract with him either.
  3. 2020: $19mm 2021: $18mm 2022: $15mm (this player option becomes guaranteed if he's traded) Honestly I don't have very much interest at all in Seager unless the Mariners are paying over 50% of the remaining contract. Locking yourself into a league average player in their 30s for 3 more years just isn't a very Stearnsy move.
  4. It was fun to think about the Brewers possibly being a sleeper for Rendon even if it was never going to happen. Glad it's the Angels and not the Dodgers though.
  5. I like the deal. Low risk signing. Hopefully adds some stability to the rotation and can probably be serviceable out of the bullpen if he can't hand in the rotation. Really affordable as well. I did see Passan tweet there are performance bonuses that could double the contract cost, but even still it's super affordable compared to some of the other back end starter types who have signed already. Still need at least 1 more starter if not 2.
  6. Here's the blurb from the Fangraphs top 50 free agent write up: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2020-top-50-free-agents/
  7. I don't know that much about him, but in the fangraphs free agent write up on him they said he's pretty much a DH/OF only option. "He’s defensively limited to left field or DH. Tsutsugo has some experience at third base, but he’s a lumbering infielder with below-average hands, which means he should only play there in an emergency. The bad hands make first base kind of dicey, too." https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2020-top-50-free-agents/ Here's a more detailed write up that is a little older: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-top-mlb-prospects-of-asia/ Also of note: the deadline to reach a deal for Tsutsugo is 12/19 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/japanese-slugger-yoshitomo-tsutsugo-posted-mlb-npb-yokohama-baystars.html
  8. No idea what it would take, but I'd be interested.
  9. I assumed he wouldn't be ready for opening day. Agreed with adambr2 that this likely has a more definitive recovery time due to how common tommy john surgery is and it's a more successful recovery than anything with the shoulder.
  10. The Rex Sox would probably have to pay 50-75% of the amount owed to Price for it to make sense for the Brewers. He's owed $32/year from 2020-2022 https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/al-east/boston-red-sox/
  11. I think the Brewers probably have room for 1 guaranteed contract in the bullpen. Kintzler is probably about the type of reliever they'll end up signing to a 1-2 year deal. It doesn't have to be Kintzler, but a dependable veteran releiver would help supplement what they have right now. This is how I would have the bullpen right now: Locks: Hader, Suter, Claudio, Free Agent signing, and Knebel who might start on the IL Out of options guys who probably make roster out of spring: T. Williams, Faria, Black, D. Guerra Shuttle squad: Burnes, Peralta, D. Williams, Wahl, Yardley You could probably argue where Burnes and Peralta will be on opening day, but my suspicion is the Brewers will want to hang onto the out of options guys for as long as possible before making a final decision on them. Some of the out of options guys might not last on the 40 man all winter though.
  12. That's a pretty good deal for the Phillies. basically replacing Cesar Hernandez and Maikel Franco with Didi and Kingery probably is a small upgrade, but not mind blowing. Maybe they'll add another bat somewhere in there to help supplement it and they have some positional versatility with the current group of Segura, Kingery, and Gregorious.
  13. Guys similar to Gausman will be around late in free agency. No need to pay market price for one of the early signers.
  14. Sounds like a 1 year deal. Haven't seen the value yet. I would have liked that signing for the Brewers. Raises the floor at SS and adds upside. Would have also added roster depth and flexibility on the infield. Oh well.
  15. Just another ho hum win for the Bucks. 15 in a row. Just incredible. There obviously wasn't the same tenacity tonight, but pretty easily handled the Magic who will probably make the playoffs as the 8th seed.
  16. Damn. I wanted the Brewers to sign him. Obviously I wasn't expecting it to actually happen and at that price I'm not sure we will ever see the Brewers sign pitcher of that caliber.
  17. He's fine, cheap, and has an option. I don't necessarily think he's any better or worse than he was last season. This is a fine use of a roster spot imo.
  18. I would love Marte- not sure what it would take, but he's signed to a team friendly deal so there is some surplus value there. Would probably take a pretty notable return to get the deal done. It would make a ton of sense if the Brewers think Braun can play ~100 games at first.
  19. So it looks like Stearns had a pretty good read on the market for Guerra. He was overvalued through arbitration compared to free agency. He is definitely replaceable, but as SRB noted he was a solid reliever who could have provided some emergency rotation depth if needed.
  20. If his medicals check out, he would be a decent option on a 1 year deal. I would prefer Todd Frazier, but either would work.
  21. I like Keon. I'm not sure if he will make the team, but you could do worse for a 5th outfielder.
  22. That was an impressive performance for the bucks. the first 2.5 quarters were extremely competitive and the defense for both teams was exceptionally active. Bucks made a few more shots and clippers turned the ball over more before the clippers basically conceded with 10 min left. I wouldn't draw any grand conclusions about the clippers from this game, but it's still a datapoint for both teams. It's been an incredibly fun season so far and I'm enjoying it greatly. On a side note, we may finally see a Giannis rest game next weekend when they have a b2b with Memphis and Cleveland.
  23. While I was very impressed with what Lyles did for the brewers in 2019 and I thought there was a decent chance he'd be back, I didn't see him getting basically the Chacin deal from 2 years ago. At this price or cheaper, there are plenty of other starters so there. Pursue specific skills, not specific players is my motto.
  24. He's been closer to league average than elite the last two seasons based on DRA. I'm not opposed to Bumgarner at the right price, but if the $100mm rumors are accurate that's probably beyond the Brewers interest anyway. On top of that, the guy is a total red ass and probably not someone who would be enjoyable to root for. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/card/57743/madison-bumgarner
  25. Pineda would have been interesting, but I wouldn't say he was atop my wishlist of Brewers targets. He was a little better than league average based on DRA last season coming off surgery. I think it's reasonable to believe he'd be about as useful for the next two years if not a little better. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/card/50704/michael-pineda
