  1. Even before the Badgers surprised us we knew they were going to struggle again teams with quality bigs this season. The Badgers aren't very deep there and really aren't very deep overall, not surprising when they lost so many seniors. But the tourney is about matchups and they might only need to take down one team like Illinois/Purdue to get to the final four if things fall their way. Not that I really have high hopes for that or anything but having a star like Davis sure makes it interesting.
  2. OK I don't want to beat this to death, I will drop it. I am in agreement with you that cap room can be made if needed to tag Adams for a trade if Rodgers leaves which is what the premise of this thread is, if Rodgers wants to go you do what it takes even if it gets as far as restructuring Clark. Edit: I guess thinking about it maybe you are right and teams would rather just wait for Preston to be released, that we don't see those type trades in bunches every year was really what changed my mind about this a few days ago.
  3. The first sentence of the article says so. Do a Google search and look at the dates of the articles about the trade. Every single article I found says it was mar 17, the start of the NFL new year, am I missing something? The article you linked says they restructured 5 players and tried to restructure him, I don't think that means they didn't get under but still traded him after the start of the new year to clear more space, one article says it freed up space to extend Floyd. Again, why can't the Packer trade Preston for a 7th rounder rather than cut him? I am not sure I am right here but the rules clearly state trades start at the start of the NFL year, if there is window to get the Rodgers trade in before the cap deadline that certainly makes things easier so I hope you are right.
  4. I guess I am not sure but the Brockers articles I find don't say he was traded before the deadline to save room, getting $1 under the cap isn't enough for draft picks and as Peavey pointed out ERFA's so more room might have been needed by the Rams after the start of the NFL year. I mean Preston Smith has an $8 Million dollar base salary next season which I think is all the destination team would have to pay him, I would think a bunch of teams would jump at that and even pay 4th or 5th round pick not to have to get into a longer deal in free agency. The article I read on the Stafford trade a few days ago said they had to wait until after the start of the new year to complete it.
  5. They absolutely can trade to clear cap space. The Rams traded Michael Brockers and the Saints traded Malcom Brown last year effective 3/17 to clear space to get under the cap. This article is talking about how the Saints may have to trade players to get under the cap. I think if you could trade to clear space pre deadline you would see a lot more of it rather than releasing players. Trade and release often have the same effect on the cap so you would see a ton of "future consideration" and low round pick type deals from cap strapped teams. This is probably designed as the players union would rather see those players released so they can get new contracts and more money. But I mentioned earlier that they could work out a trade and extend Rodgers to clear space if all 3 parties are in agreement and then officially trade him on Mar 16, as far as I know there are no rules stopping this. I could be wrong about all of this of course.
  6. They could rename the Packers the Cows and I would get over it pretty quick and look forward to the new uni's. At least those stupid cheese hats would make more sense.
  7. I would expect they would do it with the trading team involved, much like you see sign and trades in the NBA to resolve cap issues. I am not sure of the specifics of how they would do it but for example they could have a large guaranteed base salary in 2023 that the trading team could convert to signing bonus next year for their own cap relief. In the obvious case of Denver they have the cap room in 22 to make pretty much anything work.
  8. Couldn't option 2 also be done if they intended to trade Rodgers and Adams? A trading team would be extending Rodgers anyway.
  9. Look at last years oline compared to what we had this year. 3 of our 5 all pros from last season missed virtually the entire season with injuries. There was plenty of pants pissing about the cap situation last offseason and most of us expected a regression from the previous season. The result? 13 wins and a number 1 seed just like the year before. Years ago I think mcGinn or more likely one of his scout contacts said after the first 10-12 players NFL rosters are pretty much the same. Rodgers, Adams, Bak(hopefully), Jaire, Gary, Jones, Dillon, Clark are pretty good starts. We made strides with the young oline this season, Starks looks like he can be a player. Jenkins could be back opening day. They can bring some of the FA's back on deals that would be cap friendly for 22, I trust Gutes to figure out which ones should be a priority. Nothing is ever that dismal when you start with Rodgers. And all this coming from a guy who would rather cash in Rodgers and Adams and start over as I am sick of postseason disappointment and not convinced next January will be any different.
  10. I forgot about this until this last post so went to see what news was over on Buckyville forum and Jeff Potrykus hinted pretty strongly this morning he isn't coming to the Badgers. Sounds like Wednesday will be the announcement.
  11. Rodgers and Adams both had pretty big cap numbers this season and they cleared 25-30 million in space without doing anything with either of them when many thought they had to. We will have to let some vets go as indicated above and will have to make some tough choices with the FA's but they can push some of the bigger cap years for Adams and Rodgers into future caps that are expected to grow rapidly like they did before COVID. We lose players we don't want to let go most seasons, a little more turnover than usual this offseason I would think but more of a reload than a rebuild. Keep your core 5 or so players in place and you can get by with some young guys and cheaper vets. I don't think the Packers went all in recently or anything, they have always been pretty steady spending wise the Covid year just blew the plans up. Any good team with an elite QB is usually working close to the cap.
  12. The Dolphins only got a 4th and a 7th for Jarvis Landry but he isn't near the player Adams is. Jared Allen got 2 first, Frank Clark got a first, 2nd and 3rd. There are a few others somewhere in between those deals, Corey Williams drew a 2nd the last time we did it. I think given his age and high projected salary he is worth a mid to low first rounder, he is a blue chip player.
  13. Yeah, OBJ did too
  14. Well I would have preferred a Yancey Thigpen style drop in the end zone to end it but that will do.
  15. Rams needed a TD there, with no timeouts adown to the wire game will not be kind to them. Please god let the Niners step on their dicks and blow this at the end.
  16. That was crazy, I thought for sure it was a fumble or why would he challenge?
  17. It must suck to have your home games feel like a neutral field.
  18. [sarcasm]It always works for the Packers[/sarcasm]
  19. I wasn't specific but I was referring to trades, which like extensions/cuts could be a tool to reduce the cap number but apparently is not allowed before then. I guess from the players point of view they would rather be released than traded so I can see why they do it that way.
  20. Yeah, I am sure you are right on the room needing to be cleared for the tag before the under the cap time, I just wasn't clear when that was. I guess the work around here might be extending Rodgers and Adams before that time to help with cap with the worked out trades in place. It seems easier if the NFL did allow a window to get some things done though before cap time, I mean every $ paid counts eventually anyway.
  21. Ok so the post above by nodakfan17 about trading Rodgers not helping clear space for Adams tag is correct? The 8 hour thing I posted above to submit transactions must be related to something else.
  22. Are you sure we need to clear space before franchising Adams or does that need to be done at the time when all teams need to be under the cap? I couldn’t clarify that anywhere when googling earlier.
  23. Trading Rodgers first clears 20 and the 20 for Adams only needs to be cleared for a day and you get it back. Most moves outside of that are things we have to do to get under the cap anyway, there have been a few recent posts listing them I think. Edit: just thinking of my post earlier on the Rodgers trade timing which may be incorrect, do we even need to clear space for Adams if we sign and trade him on Mar 18th?
  24. I know the one guy I don’t want doing the Packers clock management is Romo. Yeah let’s down it at the one down 3 points.
  25. I have to admit I don’t care who wins but want excruciating losses for everyone.
