There are other names that will factor in that decision, too, when the time comes. If I recall correctly, my understanding was that his focus would remain on the left side of the infield going forward. Of course, the shortstop position was already locked down for the most part by other slightly more polished players, defensively, when he was promoted. At this point, I believe Baez is the third baseman for the Mudcats. That is not to say that he won’t continue to get reps elsewhere in 2024 as the organization wants to build his comfort playing at multiple spots as well. Once again, we are a LONG way out, but Bitonti is not a sure thing to start in Carolina. Clearly, the organization is not hesitant to challenge young players with an aggressive full-season assignment, but at this point he is penciled in to start the year in the ACL. That being said, we all know how quickly things can change.
