  1. We are talking about Matt Olson who signed a 8 year, $168M contract? And the Chourio contract is likely structured in a way that he's basically getting paid what he would have gotten anyways in each of the first 6 years, giving him the contract has virtually no bearing on adding other players the first 6 years.
  2. Love it! Hard to go wrong with $80M over 8 years as long as he becomes at least serviceable. Interested in hearing what the options look like. Guessing they're going to be pretty hefty to pick up, but awesome to have the control if he turns into what he could.
  3. Probably but I still don't think it's an acquisition that prohibits them from getting a better first baseman this offseason, or means they're going to trade an outfielder, or indicates they're going to go cheap the rest of the offseason,
  4. I'd be surprised if acquiring a middling guy entering his 1st year of arbitration on November 17th provides any major indication of how this roster is going to be constructed over the next few months. The other potential stuff going on tonight likely will have a much larger impact. And even then, we are waaaaaaay early in the offseason to make any conclusions.
  5. Well the roster's set! This is always the funnest time of year to be a fan, lol.
  6. hmmm... my 2050 rendering came out a little different... nice to see they put some money into Helfaer Field as well
  7. If Ross is still getting paid by the Cubs, then my vote is to pick him up for free and beat the Cubs next year while they pay for our new manager. Regardless, hopefully we finish ahead of them in the standings next year and today ends up feeling like something somewhere between a nothing burger and a dodged bullet.
  8. Well that wasn't expected. Maybe he will spend a year tearing them apart from the inside and then return?? 😬🤞
  9. 😬
  10. Maybe he's going to manage one of his kids' teams? [half blue]
  11. We can lowball CC!
  12. The Polar Bear is Pete Alonso's nickname and there was some trade speculation involving him at this year's deadline. I was in gest speculating him as compensation for CC ;)
  13. I'm really on the fence with how to handle this offseason. I do usually side with getting a haul for your stars before they hit FA (or get injured... what a blow with Woodruff), but I feel like we're in a unique spot where our farm system is looking pretty healthy already and we had a wave of prospects hit the majors last year and another wave coming soon that could help this team be contenders as early as next year already. The hardest thing for us to find moving forward is a front of the rotation headed by a guy like Burnes, so it's tempting to take another swing while we still have the ace. That said, I'll be excited to see them go into the season with Burnes still atop the rotation, but also won't be disappointed if they get a real haul for Burnes either.
  14. Yes. You don't have to have the best team to win the World Series and they don't even necessarily need to be better than this year to go further in the playoffs next year. The Arizona Diamondbacks just made their way into the Series with the 18th best offense (97 wRC+ vs. the Brewers' 92), 19th best pitching (4.36 xFIP vs. the Brewers' 4.13) , and 5th best defense (4.5 UZR/150 vs. the Brewers' 7.7).
  15. Can someone please tell me it's April 1st?
  16. Ha, well I've been tracking since the 13th for awhile because it's the time that some posters were overreacting to Canha and Santana's slow starts and Candelario's fast start. It demonstrates how poorly projecting the rest of the season is based on a couple of weeks. But your point stands as well ;)
  17. Since August 13th with their new teams: Canha (MIL) - 154 PAs, 5 HRs, 17 Rs, 28 RBIs, 4 SBs, 143 wRC+ Santana (MIL) - 159 PAs, 8 HRs, 27 Rs, 26 RBIs, 0 SB, 125 wRC+ Donaldson (MIL) - 57 PAs, 3 HRs, 5 Rs, 10 RBIs, 0 SB, 111 wRC+ Candelario (CHC) - 99 PAs, 4 HRs, 9 Rs, 13 RBIs, 1 SB, 56 wRC+
  18. Haha, that's creative. I suspect they would just re-counter by extending the opener a 2nd inning or bringing in a second reliever though.
  19. I think his argument is that once we hit the playoffs, it should be Contreras catching every day to maximize the lineup. Which I could agree with and wouldn't have a problem with generally, but I don't know if that's the time to start messing with Burnes' mojo either since he basically has no rapport built up with Contreras at this point (which I think is also part of wiguy's point).
  20. They've also won 1-0 three times (and shutout the opponent an additional 9 other times, while scoring more, sometimes many more, than 1 run). I'm not sure that's really a high number on either side of the ball for 1-0 games. They've scored at least 6 runs in 21 of their last 39 games (54%). By contrast the Braves have done that 22 times in their last 39. This team is certainly capable of putting up runs and have done it quite often since the trade deadline. They could definitely be a bit more consistent, but there is going to be a game here and there that a team loses 1-0. All that said, I'm with ya on the sentiment that there's room to improve at specific roster spots. Let's hope they catch lightning in a bottle with Donaldson starting tonight! :)
  21. After Santana and Canha's slow starts and Candelario's hot start with their new teams (since August 13th):
  22. I'd also argue Contreras was a fairly significant add this past offseason ;)
