  1. INF Mike Brosseau cleared waivers and outrighted to AAA Nashville (where he was playing already)
  2. I think Stearns loved him, but Counsell doesn't appreciate a no-glove, high-K guy. This dynamic led to the absurd decision to burn his final option in the midst of a productive streak last year, when trading him was the only logical move. The lack of options and bad finish to the 2022 season depleted Hiura's value, so Arnold guaranteed him $2.2m for 2023 in the offseason rather than sell low. Hiura was awful in Spring, so too expensive for other teams and outrighted to AAA. But 9 homers in his first 19 games had him deserved of a promotion, only hindered by a 5 BB / 22 K ratio. He remedied that enough over the next 4 games and should have joined the Crew or been traded on May 1st. Arnold was gun-shy and missed the window. Hiura would have helped the MLB squad for those next 10 days, then got hurt May 12th. And now here we are, with him trying to round back into form 2 months later.
  3. I figure we’ll pick whichever of Troy, Shaw or Taylor happens to be available at #18.
  4. - RHP Abner Uribe recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville - RHP Jason Alexander activated from 60-day injured list and optioned to AAA Nashville - C Alex Jackson of AAA Nashville suspended for his part in Thursday’s brawl (George “Punch Thrower” Valera got 6 games) - RHP Tyson Miller designated for assignment - RHP Jake Cousins sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers
  5. LHP Thomas Pannone is headed back to South Korea on a $350k deal. Good luck to him over there!
  6. - INF/OF Jheremy Vargas promoted to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina
  7. Given the relative success we’ve had with JUCO picks the past few years, I wonder if this is a niche area where we think we have an advantage, like nabbing young prospects from Venezuela and Nicaragua: Jacob Misiorowski, Antoine Kelly, Logan Henderson, Carlos F. Rodriguez, Tyler Woessner, Tayden Hall, Satchell Norman. I saw a 300-prospect board at ESPN, with just 6 JUCOs listed: RHP Gavin Adams (20.4), SS Kendrey Maduro (19.2), RHP Josh Bostick (21.7), RHP Noah Ruen (20.2), LHP Christian Oppor (19.0), LHP Kyle Carr (21.1).
  8. RHP Thyago Vieira placed on AAA Nashville's 7-day injured list RHP Alejandro Parra (6'3", 17-year old from Dominican Republic) signed and added to DSL Brewers-1 RHP Francisco Guevara (5'10", 16-year old Venezuelan) signed and added to DSL Brewers-1
  9. Jackson Chourio homered in a Shucker comeback and Hedbert Perez continued his hot streak in Carolina’s win. Wisconsin let the game slip away late and Nashville had as many ejections as runs in their loss. Image courtesy of Biloxi Shuckers Transactions: SS Eric Brown Jr. placed on High-A Wisconsin's 7-day injured list LHP Justin King activated from High-A Wisconsin's 7-day injured list LHP Justin Wilson’s rehab shifted to AAA Nashville from ACL Brewers Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Columbus 6, Nashville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Fall 6-2 to Clippers Unfortunately, RHP Justin Jarvis’ AAA debut was marred by the 3rd inning meltdown of Guardians’ #2 prospect OF George Valera at the plate. After the brawl which ensued, Jarvis (3 1/3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 5 H, 6 BB, 3 Ks, 1 WP) was unable to settle back in and a 2-0 deficit quickly became a 5-0 mountain that was too much for the Sounds to overcome. Sounds’ Extras: In terms of baseball, RHP Pedro Fernandez, rehabbing LHP Justin Wilson and LHP Clayton Andrews all did well to give Nashville’s offense a chance, combining on 5 2/3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks. Offensively, the team had six hits by six different players. Promotion Watch: left fielder Keston Hiura had a single, a bad error and K’d twice. DH/OF Tyrone Taylor singled. 3B Luis Urias went 0-for-4. Only 1B Abraham Toro helped his cause, going 1-for-1, with a double, sacrifice fly, two walks and no errors at first base. Unless C Alex Jackson (1-for-1, season OPS now 1.002) said something so grotesque which would trigger a grown man to throw multiple punches at him despite an umpire standing in the way, Jackson looks like he’ll face a rather unlucky ejection and subsequent suspension for Valera’s attack. RHP Abner Uribe, on the other hand, ended up looking a bit out of control in taking on multiple Clippers in front of their dugout. Again, words were probably passed, but by reacting that aggressively, Uribe was also tossed and will likely be suspended. It was Charlie Greene (Brewers’ Assistant Director of Player Development, better known as the organization’s roving catching coordinator) who carried Uribe out of the dust-up. Uribe did not actually play in Thursday’s game. Friday’s outlook: LHP Robert Gasser (3.94 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 10.7 K/9 in 80 IP) is the scheduled starter, with the Sounds needing a victory to even the series 2-2. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 10, Pensacola 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Late Runs, Home Runs Power Shuckers to 10-4 Win over Blue Wahoos With starting RHP Tobias Myers (6 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 5 H, 2 BB, 9 Ks) pitching on four days’ rest, the Shuckers fell behind 3-0 by the 2nd inning, but a late offensive explosion gave them the game and a 2-1 series lead. Biloxi’s bats kept coming, with center fielder Jackson Chourio (2-for-5, HR, double, 2 RBIs) leading the charge with a 6th inning RBI double and a game-tying solo shot in the 8th inning, before red-hot SS Freddy Zamora doubled in two runs to give the Shuckers their first lead. You’ll see plenty more video highlights at the Shuckers Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: Myers struggled early with an error and a balk, but ultimately settled in nicely in throwing 99 pitches on the evening, nearing his season high in strikeouts. Every spot in the lineup reached base, with eight Shuckers notching hits. Left fielder Lamar Sparks doubled and singled, 3B Zavier Warren hit a key solo homer and 1B Noah Campbell added helpful icing with a 2-run, 2-out homer in the top of the 9th inning. Hooray for RHP Cam Robinson (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) throwing two scoreless innings to close it out and earn a save, as well as LHP Luis Amaya for working around two hits to earn a win. Friday’s outlook: Expected starting RHP Christian Mejias needs to start putting up some zeros to lower his 6.31 ERA (in 67 IP). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Beloit 8, Wisconsin 6 (in 12 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Drop a Heartbreaker to Beloit With Eric Brown Jr. out injured for eight weeks due to a non-displaced hairline fracture on his left scapula (per Curt Hogg), SS Robert Moore (3-for-5, walk, 2 RBIs, SB) is being asked to do more than ever for the Timber Rattlers. On this night, that meant extending his on-base streak to 24 games, knocking in the game-tying run with an 11th inning single, but also committing the error with two outs in the top of the 9th inning which essentially sent the game to extra innings. You’ll find lots of highlights and lowlights from the video highlights compiled by the Wisconsin media team, along with a 17-minute post-game discussion. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: The Timber Rattlers jumped on Beloit with four runs in the 1st inning, setting up RHP Tyler Woessner (6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 K) for what looked like a sure-fire win. DH/OF Hendry Mendez contributed three hits (triple, double, single, 2 RBIs) and 2B Jose Acosta reached base thrice (2-for-3, triple, double, HBP, sacrifice bunt), but the team will rue going 5-for-23 with runners in scoring position, stranding 13 baserunners (vs. 8 for Beloit). RHP Sam Gardner (1 2/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), had come through in his last two save opportunities, but couldn’t quite pin this one down in the 9th inning unfortunately. Teammates and coaches will be thrilled to have LHP Justin King back from his two-month injury, even if he gave up an earned run in his first game back (season ERA now 1.84). However, 3B Eduardo Garcia exited at the start of the 7th inning with an apparent wrist injury, which risks exacerbating the team’s depth woes. C’mon, have some guts! Rather than face left fielder Alex Hall’s wrath, the Sky Carp intentionally walked him with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning and it unfortunately worked out for Beloit despite them actually loading the bases with another walk. RHP Nick Merkel (3 1/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 4 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) took the loss, but gave the team important innings as they manage their staff while playing 12 games in 12 days. Friday’s outlook: RHP Edwin Jimenez has found rough seas in his last three starts (14 IP, 13 ER), so will look for a return to his previous form and lead Wisconsin to a 3-1 series advantage. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 6, Fayetteville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Figueroa’s Strong Start Leads Mudcats to 6-3 Victory Similar to the Rattlers, Carolina grabbed an early 4-0 lead, but they thankfully managed to hold on despite the Woodpeckers clawing to within 5-3 by the 8th inning. RHP Jeferson Figueroa (4 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks, 1 WP) was thrust into the game as a spot starter (we hope that originally-scheduled starter RHP Alexander Vallecillo is okay) and turned in a terrific four scoreless innings. Mudcats’ Extras: 20-year old left fielder Hedbert Perez (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) has hopefully put his 1.5 years of struggle truly behind him, delivering the 1st inning two-run homer in this game. Perez has an .898 OPS over his last 23 games (96 PAs) after a .468 OPS in his first 35 games to start the season (143 PAs). C Blayberg Diaz also had two hits, while DH/OF Luis Castillo produced a single, walk, RBI and stolen base. Neither of RHPs Jose Chavez or Jeison Pena were particularly effective (combined 5 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks), although Pena managed to retire the final hitter of each of the 8th and 9th innings with a runner on base. Friday’s outlook: Either Vallecillo or RHP Quinton Low will get the chance to lead the Mudcats to a 3-1 series lead. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 2, DSL Guardians Red 1 Box Score / Game Log Our Dos squad only produced three hits, but that’s all the Guardians managed as well, with neither club delivering an extra-base hit in a combined 54 at-bats. Down 1-0 in the top of the 6th inning, 3B Demetrio Nadal (2-for-3, SB) started the comeback with a single, stole second (his 10th on the year in 10 attempts) and scored on a wild pitch. Nadal’s efforts apparently unnerved the Guardians’ relief pitcher enough that he walked the next two batters and threw a ball away to allow the Brewers take a 2-1 lead which they held onto thereafter. However, the real story is the pitching: Starting RHP Carlos Maurera: 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K Long reliever RHP Melvin Hernandez: 4 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks Closer (on this day) RHP Dikember Sanchez: 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks SS Roderick Flores notched the team’s only other hit, while each of 2B Filippo Di Turi and center fielder Antony Gomez walked twice, although both Flores and Gomez were caught stealing. Final: DSL Royals Gold 1, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 0 Box Score / Game Log Starting 17-year old RHP Eric Prado (5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks, 1 WP) is five games into his baseball career and has not disappointed in any of them. His season ERA dropped to 0.98, with 15 Ks in 18 1/3 IP. 17-year old Enniel Cortez (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) is also delivering exceptional results, with two scoreless innings to drop his season ERA to 2.18, with 25 Ks in 20 2/3 IP. Unfortunately, their teammates were unable to score, stranding seven runners in the game (vs. four left-on-base for the Royals). The most egregious missed opportunity was in the bottom of the 6th inning, when a leadoff double and walk led to nothing. RHP Jesael Cabrera took the loss after two singles, a wild pitch and sacrifice fly brought the game’s only run home in the top of the 6th inning. Center fielder Yophery Rodriguez led off for the team, doubling, walking and stealing a base while lifting his season OPS to .947. Three other players singled, but the team only managed to produce four hits. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck in Friday’s 7-game MILB slate! 11. SS Eric Brown Jr. placed on High-A Wisconsin's 7-day injured list LHP Justin King activated from High-A Wisconsin's 7-day injured list LHP Justin Wilson’s rehab shifted to AAA Nashville from ACL Brewers
  12. Tyrone Taylor has homered in 3 of his past 4 games. Expect him back with the MLB club, even if it means using this time to option Wiemer for service time manipulation purposes (and a rest/re-boot for Wiemer). Jason Alexander has had three decent outings for Nashville and can be optioned, but we’d have to drop someone from the 40-man or bump an injured player to the 60-day injured list.
  13. - INF Jose Caballero placed on ACL Brewers’ 7-day injured list
  14. - 3B Mike Brosseau (been playing for AAA Nashville) designated for assignment

  16. RHP Ryan Brady promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin INF/OF Eddy Alvarez transferred to Development List by AAA Nashville on 7/1 and re-activated today
  17. Logan Henderson struck out eight in his first win for the Mudcats, with Luis Lara providing early offense. Joe Gray Jr. and others supported Jacob Misiorowski in Wisconsin’s victory. Nashville lost an extra inning contest and Jeferson Quero’s homer wasn’t enough for Biloxi. Starting RHP Pedro Fernandez (5 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 1 K) was rusty after an injury sidelined him for 16 days, giving up three home runs in five innings and exiting down 5-3, but Nashville mounted comebacks via a three-run 7th inning (to lead 6-5) and two-run 9th inning to send the game to extra innings. Sounds’ Extras: Left fielder Keston Hiura (2-for-5, double, 3 RBIs) and 1B Abraham Toro had key RBI doubles in the comeback, with Toro knocking in the tying run with two outs in the top of the 9th inning. Eight of the nine lineup spots registered at least one hit, with 3B Mike Brosseau notching his fourth home run and 2B Josh VanMeter producing two singles and an RBI. After the Sounds went 3-up, 3-down in failing to bring home the ghost runner, RHP Luis Contreras was thrust into the pressure cooker in his first AAA action since May 5, giving up a walk-off single to the second batter of the frame. While RHPs Abner Uribe and Thyago Vieira were solid in the ‘pen (combined 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks), RHP Peter Strzelecki (1 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K) was not sharp in his first minor league outing since August 2022. On the Promotion Watch, center fielder Sal Frelick (2-for-4, walk) and DH/OF Tyrone Taylor (1-for-3, walk, HBP) both contributed, as they alternate center field duties from game-to-game. Monday’s outlook: Nashville’s already won the series (up four games to one), but RHP Caleb Boushley (4.63 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 72 IP) will try to make it a 5-1 week. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Mississippi 9, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Jeferson Quero Hits Team-Leading 12th Home Run in Loss to M-Braves Tied 2-2 after five innings, this game didn’t appear headed to blowout territory until starting RHP Christian Mejias (5 1/3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks was asked to extend himself beyond 91 pitches, ending his day with a double and a walk before handing over to struggling RHP Ryan Middendorf. Earlier, C Jeferson Quero (3-for-4, HR, RBI) had given Biloxi a 2-1 lead with his team-leading 12th homer of 2023: You’ll see a few more highlights at the Shuckers Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: Middendorf (2 2/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 2 Ks), still searching for his 2022 form, allowed three of the first four batters to reach as Mississippi grabbed a 5-2 lead and never looked back. Quero and SS Freddy Zamora (2-for-4, RBI) had five of the Shuckers’ six hits, with the rest of the team going 1-for-24. RHP Cam Robinson’s nightmare 2023 continued with a three-run 9th inning. His AAA ERA this year was 6.75 and now his AA ERA is 10.91. Monday’s outlook: RHP TJ Shook (5.40 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 11.3 K/9 in 36 2/3 IP) will make his third start of the season, as Biloxi needs a victory in the series finale to tie it up at three games apiece. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 5, Quad Cities 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Wisconsin Holds On for 5-4 Win at Quad Cities The Timber Rattlers started fast in support of starting RHP Jacob Misiorowski (4 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 2 Ks, 1 WP), putting two runners in scoring position in the 1st inning, then plating five runs over the next two frames for an early 5-0 lead. Little did they know that they’d register zero hits over the next 5 2/3 innings, needing to hold off the River Bandits with pitching and defense to escape with a 5-4 victory and 3-2 series lead. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Center fielder Joe Gray Jr. (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) and C Matt Wood (1-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs) had the big 2nd inning hits, each driving in two runs in that frame, before right fielder Hendry Mendez (1-for-4, HR, RBI) made his presence known with a solo shot to lead off the 3rd inning. This was 19-year old Mendez’s first game back with Wisconsin since a May 10 injury and he made solid contact all evening. RHPs Nick Merkel (3 1/3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) and Sam Gardner (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) were up to the task of keeping Quad Cities at bay, with Gardner earning his second save since joining the Timber Rattlers exactly one month ago. Unsurprisingly, neither SS Eric Brown Jr. nor INF Eduardo Garcia was in the lineup after exiting games early on Saturday and Friday, respectively. Robert Moore manned shortstop and Jose Acosta played second base, with C Darrien Miller and OF Terence Doston likely the only position players available on the bench. We await news on the seriousness of injuries to either player and hope they’re only dealing with bruises. Monday’s outlook: RHP Cameron Wagoner (6.96 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 7.0 K/9 in 54 1/3 IP) gets a second crack against the River Bandits this week, with Wisconsin seeking a win to claim the series four games to two. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Down East 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Wins Second Straight 7-3 in Kinston Starting RHP Logan Henderson (5 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 Ks) and center fielder Luis Lara (3-for-4, walk, RBI) got back to their previous excellent form, with Henderson throwing a season-high 75 pitches to grab his first win of 2023 and Lara reaching base three times in the first four innings to help Carolina take a 4-1 early lead. The win was the Mudcats’ second in a row and they’ll get a chance to even the series on Monday. Mudcats’ Extras: Elder statesman (at 24 years old) C Jose Sibrian (2-for-4, double, HBP, 2 RBI) is now 12-for-his-last-34, opening the game’s scoring with a two-run double, while right fielder Jace Avina (1-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) came through with a two-run homer in the 9th inning to give the Mudcats some needed breathing room. LHP Nate Peterson (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) returned for his first official game since being injured 31 days earlier, picking up nicely where Henderson left off. Usual contributors 3B Luke Adams and SS Gregory Barrios had a day to forget, however, going a combined 0-for-10 with five strikeouts (four Ks for Adams). Credit goes to left fielder Hedbert Perez for a 2-hit day, as well as 2B Jheremy Vargas (single, 2 walks) and 1B Jesus Chirinos (single, 2 walks, HBP) for reaching base three times and four times, respectively. RHP Jeison Pena entered in the bottom of the 8th inning with a 5-1 advantage and unfortunately struggled to hold it, allowing two full count walks and a single as the Wood Ducks made the contest competitive late. RHP Yerlin Rodriguez closed out the game with a scoreless 9th inning after Avina’s blast. Monday’s outlook: 19-year old RHP Yujanyer Herrera (4.47 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 48 1/3 IP) gets the call to try to even the series. 19. - OF Hendry Mendez activated from High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list - RHP Pedro Fernandez activated from AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list
  20. - RHP Luis Contreras promoted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi
  21. It’s been tough sledding for 3B/1B Zavier Warren at Biloxi this year: - April OPS - .600 - May OPS - .574 - June OPS - .488 But the .200 season BABIP suggests a LOT of bad luck. If INF Eduardo Garcia is sidelined for a bit (hopefully he’s not), maybe Warren could spend a few weeks mashing for Wisconsin before returning to Biloxi.
  22. - OF Eduarqui Fernandez placed on High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list, retroactive to 6/29.
  23. Stiven Cruz and Janson Junk were both stellar for Wisconsin and Nashville respectively, while Tyler Black had two key triples for Biloxi and Cam Devanney smacked two homers for Nashville. Carolina and the DSL squads struggled. The offense was largely provided by 26-year old SS Cam Devanney (2-for-3, 2 HRs, SF, 4 RBIs), whose solo homer gave Nashville a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning, followed by a two-run shot in the bottom of the 6th inning to push the advantage to 4-1. Sounds’ Extras: Already on the 40-man roster, Junk may not be a fireballer (just 47 Ks in 75 2/3 IP this year), but he’s getting the job done for the Sounds (3.69 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, team-lead in innings pitched). Passed over by 29 teams in last offseason’s pitcher-heavy Rule 5 draft, Devanney’s making an even stronger case this time around with a 1.057 OPS in his last 82 plate appearances, after starting the year slowly due to injury. MLB call-up watch: 1B Keston Hiura and 3B Abraham Toro each collected two singles and a walk, while center fielder Sal Frelick had a single in four at-bats. Rehabbing Tyrone Taylor manned right field for his first action since June 1st, going 0-for-5 but contributed by throwing out a runner to end the 1st inning. And RHP Abner Uribe (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) topped 100mph five times in his one inning of fabulous relief work, while RHP JB Bukauskas (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) also pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Friday’s outlook: If he can replicate his last outing (4 2/3 scoreless innings five days ago) with a solid start tonight, RHP Jason Alexander will certainly strengthen his case to be added to the 40-man MLB roster when he comes off the 60-day injured list shortly. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Mississippi 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Tyler Black Triples Twice, Drives in Three in Shuckers' 7-6 Comeback Win 3B Tyler Black (2-for-4, 2 triples, 3 RBIs) tripled early as Biloxi built a 4-0 lead, then tripled again in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game 6-6 after the Shuckers had fallen behind 6-4. He then scored on a wild pitch for what proved to be the winning run. You’ll see plenty more video highlights at the Shuckers Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: Relative to his usual outings, starting RHP Justin Jarvis (4 2/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 5 H, 3 BB, 8 Ks, 1 WP) struggled a bit and exited after reaching 99 pitches in the top of the 5th inning. That said, he collected another eight strikeouts and became the third Southern League pitcher to reach 90 Ks in the season’s first half (likely aided by the extra tacky baseballs being experimented with). RHP Robbie Baker (2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) helped Jarvis escape the 5th inning by delivering a strikeout, then covered an additional 1 2/3 innings, though conceded a homer to Drew Lugbauer (26 years old; .996 OPS – c’mon Braves, promote the man). After RHP Zach Vennaro struggled (1/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 0 H, 2 BBs, 2 HBPs, 1 K), LHPs Luis Amaya (Biloxi debut) and Ryan Middendorf were terrific in relief, combining on two scoreless innings, with Amaya striking out three batters. Center fielder Jackson Chourio (2-for-3, walk, RBI) also had a solid game in reaching base three times. Friday’s outlook: 28-year old RHP James Meeker (2.41 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 11.3 K/9 in 37 1/3 IP) is due to make his second straight start, after 16 relief appearances to commence the year. He’s reached 56 and 54 pitches in his last two outings, as we try to decipher whether this is an actual experiment (i.e. converting him to a starter) or simply a case of Manager Mike Guerrero managing limited starting pitching depth. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 3, Quad Cities 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Cruz, Brown Lead Rattlers to Fourth Straight Win 21-year RHP Stiven Cruz (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H – both singles, 1 BB, 8 Ks) was back in prime form, cruising through five innings by pounding the zone effectively (48 strikes in 73 pitches) and earning his third win of 2023. He lowered his season ERA to 6.59 in what has been a rather frustrating year thus far. Cruz left the game with a 1-0 lead, which SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) added to in the 8th inning with his third home run of 2023, a 2-run shot. From there, Wisconsin held on for dear life, as RHP Brannon Jordan (2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) was not his usual sharp self, handing over to RHP Tanner Shears (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 0 Ks, 1 WP) who closed out the game with a bunt force out and ground ball double play. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: The middle innings were covered by RHP Alexander Cornielle (2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K), in his first appearance in 25 days. He was limited to 40 pitches, though the team will be thrilled to have effective starter available. The Timber Rattlers only notched five hits and walked twice, with no player reaching base twice. 1B Ernesto Martinez (1-for-3, RBI) had a key game, however, singling in a run in the 3rd inning, then gunning down the lead runner at third base for the first out of the bottom of the 9th inning. River Bandit Manager and ex-Brewers infielder Brooks Conrad did not agree with the call and was ejected. The eight strikeouts were a season high for Cruz, lifting his season K/9 rate to 8.0 (vs. 10.7 last year), which hopefully bodes well for future success. We also note that DH/C Matt Wood was back in the starting lineup, despite leaving Wednesday’s game in the 3rd inning. Friday’s outlook: 23-year old RHP Tyler Woessner (2.70 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 in 66 2/3 IP), who has been the team’s top starting pitcher, is scheduled to start as Wisconsin seeks a 3-0 series lead. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Down East 5, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Held to Two Hits Again in Loss to Wood Ducks Two singles and zero walks for the offense won’t win many games, as Carolina has now dropped six of its past seven games. Mudcats’ Extras: With almost no offense to speak of, RHP Will Rudy needed to be perfect, but was instead his reasonable, solid self: 6 IP, 3 R (all coming across with two outs in the 4th inning), 4 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks, 2 WPs. Rudy’s season ERA is now 3.40. Hard-throwing 20-year old RHP Jesus Rivero (2 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) made his debut in full season affiliate ball, notching a strike out against his first batter and ending the 7th inning by inducing a ground ball double play. His second inning of work was not as kind (double, single, walk, two stolen bases), though he did strike out another two batters. Left fielder Hedbert Perez and 1B Jesus Parra collected the two singles, which matched the number of shift violations which the Mudcats were penalized for with automatic balls. Friday’s outlook: Almost-21 year old (his birthday is tomorrow) RHP Alexander Vallecillo (3.33 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 in 24 1/3 IP) is scheduled to take the hill as Carolina needs a victory to cut the series deficit to 2-1. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Dodgers Mega 5, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 1 Box Score / Game Log Our Dos youngsters fell to their fifth straight loss in this 7-inning contest, dropping their record to 7-11. Starting 16-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 2 WPs; season ERA 1.93) put in a respectable performance, conceding only one earned run in spite of the six hits and exiting with his team down 2-1. However, a 4-for-23 day at the plate with one double and one walk was not enough to get the job done. Key signing 17-year old 2B/SS Filippo Di Turi (2-for-3; season OPS .864) singled twice, but was caught stealing and also picked off base. 19-year old C Eric Martinez (1-for-3, double; season OPS .781) notched the double and scored the team’s only run. Final: DSL White Sox 6, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 1 Box Score / Game Log The young Uno men dropped their third straight game, falling to a 10-8 record thus far. Similar to their DSL-2 brethren, 18-year old starting RHP Jose Meneses (4 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks; season ERA 2.70) navigated traffic to make the game competitive, but the offensive performance was lacking – e.g. 3-for-31 at the plate. Meneses exited with the game tied 1-1. That said, I’m blaming lightning at least in part for this loss, as 17-year old RHP Eric Prado’s (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) relief outing was cut short after just one inning due to a one hour and five minute game delay. Prado had thrown five scoreless innings in his last appearance (see video from prior outings below). 20-year old RHP Yonawil Florimon walked four batters and threw a wild pitch in two innings of work, though he only conceded one run and zero hits. The game really got away due to a four-run 8th inning off of 22-year old RHP Roman Perez, who walked three, hit one batter and threw five wild pitches in just 2/3rds of an inning. Offensively, the team did manage to collect 7 walks, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. 17-year old center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (2-for-4, double) was the bright spot, doubling and singling, though he was caught stealing.
