  1. - INF Brice Turang recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville - INF Luis Urias optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers - OF Tyler Naquin placed on AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list - OF Tyrone Taylor sent on rehab assignment to AAA Nashville - C Payton Henry suspended for his part in the mini-brawl against Norfolk on Sunday
  2. Adding LHP Thomas Pannone to the 40-man MLB roster at this time is interesting, given that it’s now full and we may need to add rehabbing RHP Jason Alexander and/or LHP Justin Wilson soon. But who knows? Maybe Tyrone Taylor, Jake Cousins, Bennett Sousa, Ethan Small and/or Eric Lauer would be moved to the 60-day injured list to create space.
  3. Nine stolen bases against our ACL Brewers with nobody caught. And zero stolen bases for the good guys. Ouch. That might keep C Satchell Norman (.929 OPS), who’ll turn 21 next month, in ACL ball longer than I was thinking. We’ll see. I’m guessing the Mudcats will get OF Luis Castillo, 1B/C Tayden Hall and OF Reidy Mercado added from the ACL shortly. Which will probably push Jose Sibrian up to Wisconsin, where OF Hendry Mendez also looks ready to return from injury.
  4. - LHP Thomas Pannone’s contract selected by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville - RHP Peter Strzelecki optioned to AAA Nashville by MLB Brewers - Signed RHP Pablo Marcelus and assigned to DSL Brewers-2 (though presently listed on Restricted List) - C Nick Kahle transferred to Development List from AA Biloxi
  5. Cool. In my mind he was not going to be able to heal, complete rehab work and get into enough of a groove to help the MLB club this season. Would be wonderful to have Ashby back.
  6. RHP Jesus Rivero promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers LHP Justin Wilson sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers
  7. OF Hendry Mendez sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers 1B/C Tayden Hall sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers INF/OF Beyker Pastran released by ACL Brewers
  8. Jacob Misiorowski struggled a bit, but Joe Gray Jr. and the offense helped him out with 12 runs on 16 hits. Jason Alexander and Josh VanMeter led Nashville to a win, while Biloxi and Carolina fell on Sunday. Image courtesy of Biloxi Shuckers - Tyler Black For the week, Nashville, Biloxi and Wisconsin each tied their home series 3-3, while Carolina lost its home series 4-1. Transactions: OF Lamar Sparks activated from AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list RHP Jason Alexander’s rehab shifted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 3, Norfolk 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Cap First Half With Win Over Tides Rehabbing RHP Jason Alexander (4 2/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 4 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) re-discovered his early 2022 form and 2B Josh VanMeter (1-for-1, HR, 2 walks, HBP, RBI) homered while reaching base four times, leading Nashville to a chippy win over Norfolk in a game which saw three ejections. You’ll find more video highlights at the Nashville Sounds Twitter feed. Sounds’ Extras: After Alexander conceded 7 runs and 14 hits over 7 2/3 IP in his three preceding rehab starts for ACL Brewers and AA Biloxi, I certainly did not expect him to dominate league-leading Norfolk, but he did just that, walking none and limiting hard contact (four singles, lots of ground balls). Though our eyes have been fixated on center fielder Sal Frelick (0-for-4, no Ks in his first game back since a scary foul ball injury on Thursday), 1B Keston Hiura (1-for-3, HBP, 2 Ks) and SS Brice Turang (1-for-3, double, walk, RBI; hitting streak up to 12 games), we need to take note of VanMeter. The 28-year old left-handed hitter only played three games in April, then rehabbed for five games in ACL ball in mid-June and has quickly found his footing in four post-rehab games with Nashville: 3-for-8, 3 homers, 6 walks, 1 HBP, just 2 Ks. He’s played in the majors each of the past four seasons and clearly has his sights set for a return. The game went sideways in the bottom of the 6th inning, as Tides’ fireballer Darwinzon Hernandez hit VanMeter and 3B Patrick Dorrian with pitches that were nowhere near the plate. Each of C Payton Henry (who was on base), Dorrian and Hernandez were sent home early in the ensuing scuffle. LHP Darrell Thompson (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and RHP Abner Uribe (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) were solid in middle inning relief work, with Uribe entering just after the mini-brawl and throwing several 100mph pitches at and above the eyebrows, though thankfully they were over the plate. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (39-36) travels to face Cardinals’ affiliate Memphis (40-34), with all full season affiliate series running from Wednesday-Monday this time around. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Chattanooga 10, Biloxi 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Tyler Black Reaches 40 Stolen Bases in Shuckers Loss to Lookouts The Lookouts jumped on starting RHP Christian Mejias (2 IP, 5 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K) with four runs in the 1st inning and remained relentless thereafter, scoring five more runs off of RHP TJ Shook (4 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) and LHP Nick Bennett (1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks). Biloxi didn’t wilt, however, scoring in each of the first three innings and narrowing the game to 7-6 with a C Jeferson Quero (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) moonshot over the lights in the bottom of the 5th inning, his 10th of the year. Again, you’ll see a lot more video highlights at Biloxi’s Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: 1B/C Wes Clarke (1-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) continues to show some potency, notching his 8th homer of 2023 with a solo shot in the 3rd inning. 2B Freddy Zamora (2-for-3, double, walk) and left fielder Tristen Lutz (2-for-4, RBI) also contributed four of the team’s seven hits. DH/3B Tyler Black didn’t reach base via hit or walk, but did manage to steal his 40th base of the season after reaching on an error in the 1st inning. Unfortunately, he was caught stealing in the next frame for the fifth time. The team is clearly committed to giving Zamora more time at second base, where he’s started five of the past nine games, even forcing Felix Valerio over to third base in this contest for the first time this season. Trailing 10-6 in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Shuckers got one final chance to turn the tide, but unfortunately Lutz grounded into a double play to end a two-on, one-out threat. Next week’s outlook: After an extra day off on Tuesday, Biloxi (34-35) hosts Braves’ affiliate Mississippi (33-35). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 12, Lansing 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Offense Pounds Sixteen Hits to Beat Lugnuts 12-4 As always with Timber Rattler home games, take some time to enjoy detailed video highlights and the post-game podcast. Starting his second game of the week, RHP Jacob Misiorowski (2 2/3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 5 Ks) uncharacteristically struggled, conceding two doubles, two singles and four walks (including the final three batters, each after running counts full), but that strikeout capability to escape threats is something special. Thankfully, the Wisconsin offense picked him up with four runs in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings as the team built an 8-2 lead and never looked back. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Every spot in the lineup collected at least one hit, with center fielder Joe Gray Jr. (3-for-4, triple, double, SF, 2 RBIs) leading the way with a 2nd inning triple, 3rd inning double, 4th inning single and 6th inning sacrifice fly, following up Saturday’s 2-homer, 6 RBI effort with aplomb. Each of RHPs Brannon Jordan (2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) and Tanner Shears (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) and LHP Luis Amaya (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) were solid in relief, with Jordan stranding three Misiorowski baserunners in a tense top of the 3rd inning. Two-hit games abounded in a fun series finale for 4,606 home fans: 2B Robert Moore, C Matt Wood, 3B Ben Metzinger, right fielder Eduarqui Fernandez, left fielder Terence Doston. 1B Ernesto Martinez also reached base three times (double, walk, HBP). Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (28-39) hits the road to take on Royals’ affiliate Quad Cities (32-37), with the series commencing on Wednesday. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Lynchburg 3, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Lara Homers in 3-1 Series Finale Loss to Lynchburg The final score was close, but the Hillcats really dominated in terms of opportunities, going 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position versus just 0-for-3 for Carolina, who appear to need an offensive infusion. Lynchburg led 3-0 after three innings. 18-year old center fielder Luis Lara (2-for-4, HR, RBI) appeared to be the team’s best hope for clawing back into the game thereafter, striking out on a pitch timer violation with a runner aboard in the 3rd inning, homering to lead off the 6th inning and singling to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning. Mudcats’ Extras: RHP Logan Henderson (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K) got the start, though was limited to one inning and 16 pitches after starting a game just five days earlier. I’ll put the concern-o-meter (regarding potential injury) at a 3 out of 10 for Mr. Henderson, while waiting to see if he makes a start in Carolina's upcoming series. That said, if Henderson’s start was abruptly cut short for whatever reason, it might explain why RHP Quinton Low (1 1/3 IP, 3 R, 1 H, 4 BB, 1 WP, 2 Ks) struggled so much in the 2nd inning, commencing with eight consecutive balls. Four tips of the cap to the four relievers who kept Lynchburg off the board over nearly seven innings to give the Mudcats a chance: RHPs Jeferson Figueroa, Will Childers, Jeison Pena and Shane Smith (combined 6 2/3 IP, 0 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 2 WP, 7 Ks). Childers threw 76 pitches over his three innings of work. 3B Jheremy Vargas followed up Lara’s 8th inning single with a double to put the pressure on the Hillcats, but SS Jadher Areinamo flied out end that threat. C Jose Sibrian went 2-for-3, while right fielder Kay-Lan Nicasia took an early shower, having been ejected after a 4th inning ground out. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (34-32) stays in North Carolina, heading to Kinston to take on Wednesday to take on Rangers’ affiliate Down East (39-25). We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck in the three Rookie level games on each of Monday and Tuesday, with full season affiliates resuming action on Wednesday, June 28. 12. As Biloxi and Carolina were rained out, the organization was a combined 3-and-3 on a busy Thursday, with Nashville splitting its home doubleheader. Transactions: RHP Trevor Megill optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Nashville 7, Norfolk 1 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Norfolk 3, Nashville 0 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds, Tides Battle to Doubleheader Split The evening in Nashville started well, with LHP Thomas Pannone (6 2/3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 10 Ks) striking out the first two hitters and left fielder Keston Hiura (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) homering in his first at-bat in AAA ball since May 12. From there, Pannone didn’t need any more assistance, exiting at 98 pitches, one out shy of a complete-game (7-inning) victory. Unfortunately, the night cap was another matter entirely, with LHP Ethan Small (2 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 H, 2 BB, 0 Ks) making a spot start, the team falling behind 3-0 by the 3rd inning and the Sounds’ offense having only one hitter reach base over the final four innings. Sounds’ Extras: We’re anxiously awaiting word on the health of right fielder Sal Frelick, who exited in pain mid-at-bat in the 5th inning of the second game after fouling a ball off his knee. Let’s pray the absence, if any, is short-term. Let’s hold back before anointing Hiura the Brewers’ offensive savior, as he did strike out in his three subsequent at-bats. Other Sounds players contributing on offense included 3B Mike Brosseau (1-for-2, HR, HBP, 2 RBIs), right fielder Skye Bolt (3-for-4) and SS Brice Turang (2-for-6, 2 doubles, walk, 2 RBIs). RHP Abner Uribe (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and LHP Darrell Thompson (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) completed solid shifts in the second game. Catch the forum discussion on whether they simply needed some time to adjust to the non-tacky balls after being promoted from the Southern League Shuckers. If LHP Eric Lauer (temporary inactive list) or RHP Jason Alexander (struggled in last rehab start in AA) aren’t at Manager Rick Sweet’s disposal by Sunday, he’ll likely have to cobble together a bullpen game to complete the series. Friday’s outlook: RHP Janson Junk (4.23 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 5.7 K/9 in 61 2/3 IP) is the scheduled starter, as the Sounds seek a win to even the series 2-2. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Via the Shuckers’ website, rainout details: Shuckers-Lookouts Postponed on Thursday Due to Rain The Shuckers and Lookouts will immediately make up for the rainout with a Friday doubleheader, starting at 5:05pm Central Time. Friday’s outlook: Expect RHPs Justin Jarvis (3.32 ERA in 65 IP) and Tobias Myers (5.43 ERA in 59 2/3 IP) to lead Biloxi as they aim to double their 2-0 series lead. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Lansing 4, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers End First Half with a Close Loss to Lansing We are absolutely spoiled for content when Wisconsin plays at home: Detailed video highlights 15-minute post-game podcast The Timber Rattlers led 2-0 after one inning and 3-2 by the 4th inning, but weren’t able to muster any offense thereafter, falling behind 2-1 in this week’s home series. That said, the 4,649 fans in attendance had to be excited to see 2022 first round pick SS Eric Brown Jr. (0-for-2, 2 walks, SB) back atop the lineup after a thumb injury. The sparkplug walked, stole his 23rd base and scored on a DH/C Darrien Miller (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs) two-run double in the 1st inning, then walked again in the 2nd inning but was picked off. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: It was far from a masterpiece, but the team will be encouraged by RHP Stiven Cruz (5 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 3 Ks) limiting the damage after a rough 8-game stretch. RHP Max Lazar (3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 K) took the tough luck loss despite another respectable performance. New Rattlers Pitching Coach Josh Spence (formerly Biloxi’s Bullpen Coach) will be considered a magician if he’s able to quickly straighten out Cruz (7.24 ERA), Cameron Wagoner (7.32 ERA), Michele Vassalotti (6.00 ERA) and newcomer Sam Gardner (7.71 ERA). With 1B Ernesto Martinez (2-for-4, double, RBI) now hitting a bit better, it may be time to get the seventh-year minor leaguer up to Biloxi for his first taste of AA ball. Friday’s outlook: 23-year old RHP Tyler Woessner (2.52 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 in 60 2/3 IP) is another Rattler who may get a shot in AA ball at some point in the second half of the season, after the Southern League stops using those extra tacky baseballs of course. For now, he’ll try to even the series 2-2 on Friday evening. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes (N/A) Via the Mudcats’ website, rainout details: Mudcats & Hillcats Cancelled Thursday With the Carolina League season’s first half officially ending on Thursday, this game will not be made up. Friday’s outlook: Don’t be surprised if RHPs Alexander Vallecillo and Will Rudy tag-team Friday’s game, looking to cover the entire nine innings, as the Mudcats need a victory to avoid a 3-0 series deficit. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Athletics 2, ACL Brewers 0 Box Score / Game Log Pitching dominated this game, with the teams combining to strike out 25 hitters while only conceding two doubles, five singles and three walks. Unfortunately for the Brewers, four Athletics reached in the top of the 1st inning off of starting RHP Daniel Corniel (4 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks), as they grabbed the 2-0 lead which held up over the remainder of the game, dropping the ACL Brewers record to 8-4. ACL Brewers’ Extras: RHP Jesus Rivero (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks) and LHP Anfernny Reyes (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) were both superb. Coincidentally, they both hit the same batter, which I think the numbers clearly suggest was the fault of the opposing player. And numbers don’t lie. :) Rivero has now K’d 19 in just 11 1/3 IP and lowered his season WHIP to 0.97, while Reyes has K’d 10 in 7 2/3 IP, has yet to allow an earned run and dropped his own season WHIP to 0.52. 17-year old SS Juan Baez (3-for-4, double) collected all three hits which the Brewers registered, with his teammates going a combined 0-for-26 with one walk. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 14, DSL Guardians Blue 2 Box Score / Game Log Our DSL Dos squad led 3-1 after two innings, 6-1 by the 5th inning and then poured in another eight runs thereafter to improve their record to 7-6. They outhit the Guardians Blue team 14-to-5 and stole five bases while conceding none. We’ll have to start asking why the organization has been largely hiding 17-year old, 6’4” right fielder Christopher Vasquez (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, 3 RBIs), who now has 2 HRs, 3 doubles and 5 RBIs in just 12 career at-bats. Still looking at the offense, each of left fielder Demetrio Nadal (3-for-4, triple, two doubles, walk, 4 RBIs) and SS Filippo Di Turi (3-for-5, double, walk, 3 RBIs) collected three hits, while combining to knock in seven runs. This was Nadal’s first career game in the outfield after 47 starts at shortstop, third base or second base. On the mound, starting RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 3 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and 18-year old Carlos Maurera (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) were both impressive in reducing their season ERAs to 1.80 and 1.42, respectively. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 7, DSL Guardians Red 4 Box Score / Game Log The DSL Uno game started as a pitching duel, 17-year old fireballer RHP Eric Prado (5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks matched the opposition through five scoreless innings. The Brewers’ bats didn’t spur into action until they trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning, with 1B/C Brayan Oropeza getting them started with a single, before big-time two-out singles from C Yannic Walther (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), OF/1B Argenis Aparicio and DH/OF Brian Sanchez (2-for-3, double, walk, 2 RBIs) put them ahead 5-1. 13. Thomas Pannone silenced the opposition and Keston Hiura homered to lead the Sounds, but the night was a downer after Sal Frelick exited early on a foul ball to his knee. Wisconsin and ACL Brewers lost close games, while the DSL squads swept the Guardians. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic As Biloxi and Carolina were rained out, the organization was a combined 3-and-3 on a busy Thursday, with Nashville splitting its home doubleheader. 18. Nashville capped off a six-game sweep of Gwinnett in front of yet another sell-out crowd. Gutty wins by Wisconsin and Carolina enabled each of them to tie their series 3-3 for the week. Biloxi dropped a second straight tough game, losing their series 4-2. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 3, Gwinnett 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Eddy Alvarez's Walk-Off Homer Completes Six Game Sweep of Stripers 2B Eddy Alvarez (3-for-3, HR, 3 RBIs, 2 SBs) provided the bulk of the offense in this nail-biter, reaching base four times, stealing two bases and ultimately sending all the Dads home happy with his 3-run walk-off blast on a 1-1 count with one out in the bottom of the 9th inning. Sounds’ Extras: 24-year old starting LHP Robert Gasser (6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) delivered his best performance of 2023, matching the Stripers pitch-for-pitch over six scoreless innings. The bullpen of RHPs Matt Bush and Abner Uribe and LHP Clayton Andrews (combined 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks) continued Gasser’s excellent work, with only Uribe running into a bit of difficulty with consecutive two-out walks in the top of the 8th inning. On the Free Frelick Watch: 0-for-3 with a walk, although he did well to get himself to third base in the bottom of the 8th inning (walk, two wild pitches). Next week’s outlook: Nashville remains home and welcomes league-leading Orioles’ affiliate Norfolk. Expect LHP Thomas Pannone (2.89 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 7.7 K/9 in 46 2/3 IP) to start the opening game. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery 6, Biloxi 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Shuckers Loss to Biscuits Trailing by two runs and down to their final out, center fielder Jackson Chourio walked and scored on a wild pitch after 3B Tyler Black (2-for-4, double, walk, RBI, SB) singled, but they couldn’t quite get over the hump in dropping the finale. C Wes Clarke (1-for-2, HR, walk, SF, 2 RBIs) also contributed a home run and threw out Montgomery’s only attempted basestealer earlier in the game. Shuckers’ Extras: RHP Christian Mejias (4 1/3 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) continues to rack up strikeouts and earned runs in his outings. He cruised through three innings (two harmless singles) before giving up two-runs bombs to Rays’ 1.038 OPS man Austin Shenton in each of the 4th and 5th innings. Every spot in the lineup contributed - seven players notched hits, one drew walks and one had an RBI. The bullpen of LHP Nick Bennett, RHP Bo Bowman and LHP Ryan Middendorf (combined 3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) kept Biloxi in the game, though RHP Cam Robinson struggled in his first game since being DFA’d, going to full counts against all three batters while yielding two singles. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi returns home to take on Reds’ affiliate Chattanooga. RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez may start the opening game on relatively short rest. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 10, Great Lakes 8 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Wisconsin Wraps Two-Week Road Trip with Thrilling Win Playing their 12th straight road game, Wisconsin didn’t cower in the face of an early 4-0 deficit or a late 6-3 disadvantage. 1B Ernesto Martinez (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs, SB) hit a two-out, two-strike, 3-run homer to the opposite field in the 3rd inning, then started the 7th inning hit barrage (5 singles, a Robert Moore double, 5 runs) to turn the tables on league leading Great Lakes. Moore also went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base in a solid performance. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: When batters reached base, starting RHP Edwin Jimenez (4 IP, 6 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks, 2 WPs) didn’t help himself much (two wild pitches) and was also let down by Martinez (dropped foul ball, didn’t cover first base on infield hit), though Ernesto made it up with his bat. RHP Max Lazar (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) put in yet another solid bullpen shift. Normally-reliable RHP Luis Amaya first heightened the tension by allowing the potential game-tying run on base with one out in the 9th inning, before inducing a ground ball double play to end it. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin return to Appleton to host Athletics’ affiliate Lansing. Top pitching prospect RHP Jacob Misiorowski is scheduled to make his home debut in High-A ball on Tuesday. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 12, Augusta 9 (in 10 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Perez & Areinamo Lead Comeback 'Cats to 12-9 Victory Similar to their High-A comrades, the Mudcats appeared down-and-out despite out-hitting the opposition. In fact, they were down to their last strike before Jadher Areinamo (3-for-5, HR, RBI) tomahawked a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall, with his first homer of 2023 sending the game to extra innings. Mudcats’ Extras: 1B Jesus Parra (2-for-5, HR, double, 4 RBIs) erased an early three-run deficit with a 3-run blast in the second inning, then gave Carolina its first lead of the game with an RBI double to start the 10th inning. In all, the Mudcats produced a whopping 19 hits as they eventually cut the Augusta GreenJackets down to size. Carolina didn’t win this game with pitching, but RHP Nick Merkel (3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) put in the best shift out of five hurlers, earning the win for his effort. Trailing 8-5 entering the final inning, center fielder Luis Lara got things going with a 7-pitch walk before left fielder Hedbert Perez (3-for-6, HR, 2 RBIs, SB) immediately followed with a 2-run blast to put the pressure on. 20. Thank you. You're probably right. I'll delete that part of the post. This is probably a case of Arias not showing up on any roster, so he ended up a the bottom of my spreadsheet. OF Jose Gonzalez is another such case of a man in limbo.
  21. - RHP Tyson Miller optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers - LHP Wade Miley and DH/1B Jesse Winker reinstated to MLB Brewers from MILB rehab assignments - OF Lamar Sparks placed on 7-day injured list by AA Biloxi, retroactive to 6/16 - RHP Samuel Dario placed on 7-day injured list by ACL Brewers
  22. We wanted to tip our caps to some players that were recently released or retired: 22-year old LHP Pablo Garabitos, born in the Dominican Republic, was taken in the 25th round ($125k sign-on bonus) of the 2018 draft out of Lakewood Ranch High School in Florida. Pegged as a reliever from the get-go, he was quite dominant in Arizona (2 seasons – 2.22 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 9.8 K/9 in 48.2 IP)) and Low-A ball (2022 season – 1.61 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 9.8 K/9 in 56 IP), so it’s difficult to understand why the organization didn’t promote him at a faster clip. He evidently suffered an injury this past offseason or at the start of spring training, causing him to be placed on the 60-day injured list in early April 2023, before his surprising release last week. We hope that Pablo is fully healed and ready to seize the next opportunities which come his way. 22-year old OF Micah Bello was a competitive balance pick after the 2nd round ($550k sign-on bonus) in 2018 out of Hilo High School in Hawaii. He did just enough on the field in 2018 and 2019 to keep prospect watchers interested (e.g. .648 OPS, 10 stolen bases in Arizona; .726 OPS with 6 homers at Rocky Mountain). He then recorded a ho-hum .663 OPS with 64 Ks (vs. 11 walks) as a 20-year old at Low-A Carolina in 2021, though lost two months due to injury. Sent to repeat at Low-A in April 2022, he was the team’s top hitter with a .994 OPS in 18 games before being promoted to High-A Wisconsin, where he posted a .641 OPS over 20 games before being injured. This year, he struggled in 14 games at Wisconsin, though perhaps he was dealing with yet another injury before announcing his voluntary retirement. We hope that Micah was able to further his education on the side during his five seasons in the Brewers’ organization and wish him luck in his future endeavors. 22-year old RHP Fernando Olguin joined the Brewers as an international free agent out of Mexico in May 2019, then did nothing but impress over his first two seasons: 1.88 ERA with 53 Ks in 43 IP in the Dominican Summer League in 2019; 2.87 ERA with 30 Ks in 31.1 IP in Arizona in 2021. Then 21-year old Fernando put up somewhat respectable results last year in Low-A ball (5.30 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 9.0 K/9 in 69.2 IP), though with need for improvement. This year, Olguin faced just 11 batters at Low-A Carolina before being released. He has since joined Tijuana of the Mexican League (independent ball) and we hope he makes significant strides there. 25-year old RHP Joey Matulovich was a 20th round selection ($110k sign-on bonus) in 2018 out of UC-Berkeley. After surprisingly good numbers (2.75 ERA with 49 Ks in 36 IP) in the hitter-friendly Pioneer League in 2018, the next season in Arizona/Low-A Wisconsin was more of a struggle (5.57 ERA with 45 Ks in 32.1 IP). By 2021, he was revived in Low-A ball (1.80 ERA with 56 Ks in 40 IP) but struggled after a promotion to High-A (6.55 ERA with 39 Ks in 34.1 IP). Last season saw a full-time shift to the bullpen in High-A, which unfortunately didn’t deliver the expected results (5.98 ERA with 64 Ks in 58.2 IP), then he only saw action in 5 games at High-A Wisconsin in April before being released. He’s since joined Winnipeg in the American Association (independent ball) and we wish him terrific success. 24-year old LHP Jakob Brustoski signed as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech in July 2021. He can certainly light up the radar gun, striking out 69 batters in just 32.2 IP in 31 games over about two seasons with the Brewers: 7 games in Arizona, 24 at Low-A Carolina. Unfortunately, control was an issue as he also walked 50 batters, threw 32 wild pitches and hit 9 players, contributing to his career MILB ERA of 11.57. We wish Jakob success in putting his tools together elsewhere in baseball or in whichever career he chooses. 33-year old RHP Robert Stock joined AAA Nashville in January 2023 after an eventful career with the Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, Padres, Red Sox, Cubs, Mets, Dooson Bears (Korea) and the Israeli National Team. He’s logged 72.2 innings in the Majors, lastly in 2021. Originally selected by St. Louis as a catcher from USC in the 2009 draft, he didn’t transition to pitching until 2012 in Low-A ball. He’d pitched respectably in AAA in 2021 and in Korea in 2022, but this season with Nashville was a struggle (8.22 ERA in 23 IP). Mr. Stock has quickly landed on his feet with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League (independent ball) and we wish him tremendous success. 20-year old OF/INF Jacob Zalm joined the Brewers as an international free agent out of Curacao in July 2019, though wasn’t able to debut until July 2021 due to the lost Covid season. After a highly productive 2021 in the Dominican Summer League (.764 OPS with 15 stolen bases in 135 PAs), he spent most of 2022 stateside Arizona, posting a somewhat respectable .655 OPS with 5 stolen bases (vs. 0 CS) in 113 PAs. Released just prior to the ACL season commencing, perhaps Zalm was a casualty of the Brewers’ reduction to having just one team in Arizona, but his lack of a premium defensive position (most 2022 innings were in left field) probably didn’t help his case. We wish Jacob all the best whether in baseball or other career pursuits. 21-year old RHP Phili Silverio was signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in March 2021. Phili skipped Dominican Summer League ball, being placed directly in Arizona in July 2021, understandably struggling to a 5.59 ERA and 1.86 WHIP, though with an eye-opening 30 strikeouts in just 19.1 innings pitched. Unfortunately, his ERA (7.48) and walks (26 in 21.2 IP) didn’t improve in a second season in Arizona, before he was ultimately released early last month. Good luck Phili! 20-year old RHP Delson Guzman signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in October 2019. Similar to Zalm, Guzman didn’t formally debut until July 2021. He pitched just 4.2 innings in the Dominican Summer League that season, before going on the 60-day injured list. Unfortunately, that injury carried into the 2022 season, in which he only pitched 7 innings (2.57 ERA with 9 Ks) in Arizona. This year, Delson was placed on the 60-day injured list to start the season in April and has now been released. We wish Mr. Guzman the best of success in his future pursuits. 19-year old RHP Leonardo Rivera joined as an international free agent from the Dominican Republic in January 2021, but went on the 60-day injured list and didn’t debut until 2022 with DSL Brewers-1. Last season, he made 15 relief appearances, delivering a 6.48 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 7.2 K/9 in 25 innings. He also earned two wins and one save for his efforts. We wish him a successful career, whether in baseball or another path. 18-year old RHP Breijher Subero signed as an international free agent from Venezuela in June 2022, but he unfortunately never made his organizational debut. We hope he’s healthy and wish him well in his career and life.

  24. It was a terrific day across most of the Brewers’ system, as teams won six of seven games and the Mudcats welcomed OF Luis Lara back to a lineup in desperate need. Only Wisconsin fell in a tough one-run affair. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Gwinnett 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Devanney's Heroics Gives Sounds Third-Straight Win Over Stripers After not pitching for eight days, a refreshed RHP Caleb Boushley limited contact in keeping the Stripers off the board through the first five innings, while a tie-breaking 2-run blast from 2B Cam Devanney delivered the Sounds’ third straight victory at home over Gwinnett. Take a gander at the Sounds’ Twitter feed to see Devanney’s homer, a confident LHP Clayton Andrews strut off the mound after cleaning up danger in the 8th inning and other highlights. Sounds’ Extras: SS Brice Turang and 3B Mike Brosseau are starting to find their stroke, hitting homers in the 5th and 6th innings to give Nashville a 3-0 lead. After starting the season late due to injury, then understandably struggling over his first month, 2B Cam Devanney has found his groove since May 24th, connecting on a first pitch, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th inning to win the game. Rehabbing RHP Matt Bush and AAA debutant RHP Abner Uribe struggled with walks and an error each, which enabled Gwinnett to tie the game at 3-3 by the 8th inning. Thankfully LHP Clayton Andrews had less difficulty, stranding two runners in the 8th inning and earning the 4-out save. Friday’s outlook: LHP Eric Lauer will make his first start since being optioned to AAA ball, after two difficult rehab outings with the Sounds (4 2/3 IP, 7 ER, 12 H, 4 BB, 6 Ks). Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 6, Montgomery 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Twirl Seventh Shutout of the Year to Win Third Straight RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez, LHP Ryan Middendorf and RHP James Meeker were dominant in the 2-hit, 3-walk, 12-K shutout, with no Montgomery playing even reaching third base in the game, giving Biloxi a 2-0 series lead on the road. Leading the team in most offensive categories, 3B Tyler Black got the party started with a 3rd inning RBI double and added a solo homer to lead off the 5th inning, while Isaac Collins came through with a clutch 2-out, 2-run single in the 4th inning. Shuckers’ Extras: We’ll set the concern-o-meter at 2 of 10 for Rodriguez, who exited at just 60 pitches after two walks in the 4th inning. Fanatic watcher wiguy94 commented in the daily forum that no trainer visited the mound, so the current assumption is that this was a planned short start. Back in the comfort of AA hall after a rough 10-game stint at AAA Nashville (7.71 ERA), Middendorf stranded those two baserunners, allowing just one of six batters to reach base (a harmless walk). Four innings, no runs, eight Ks, no walks was exceptional from Meeker, achieved in just 56 pitches (a season high). Friday’s outlook: The Shuckers and Biscuits have a rare doubleheader to make up an earlier rainout, with RHP Justin Jarvis (2.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 10.5 K/9 in 62 2/3 IP) starting one of the games. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Great Lakes 3, Wisconsin 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Loons Edge Rattlers 3-2 The Timber Rattlers battled but lost their second straight one-run game at Great Lakes to fall behind 2-1 in this week’s series. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Starting RHP Cameron Wagoner has been markedly better over his last 3 games, but 3 runs in 5 innings is still a 5.40 ERA, so there remains room for improvement. 24-year old LHP Luis Amaya (3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) continues to impress as a multi-inning reliever, averaging nearly 40 pitches per outing. As close as the game appears, Wisconsin only had one batter make it as far as second base over the game’s final seven innings. Coming away with just two runs on their 5 singles and 3 walks in the first two innings was a missed opportunity. Friday’s outlook: It’s been a rough season thus far for RHP Stiven Cruz (6.91 ERA in 43 IP), who now faces the task of turning it around against one of the top minor league clubs Great Lakes (41-18 season record). Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Augusta 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Aquino Totals 7 Ks in Streak Snapping Victory Center fielder Luis Lara returned to action after missing most of the Mudcats’ 8-game losing streak, as the team erupted for 14 hits in support of a terrific start from RHP Patricio Aquino (4 1/3 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks). Mudcats’ Extras: Lara was a willing spark plug for the offense, walking and stealing a base in the 1st inning, singling and scoring in the 3rd inning and doubling in 4th inning as the Mudcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Don’t look now, but 20-year old Aquino just lowered his ERA to 1.82 after retiring 13 of 14 batters, placing him 6th in the 12-team Carolina League (min. 30 IP). Every spot in the lineup grabbed at least one hit, with five players notching two hits. Of particular note, SS Gregory Barrios had a triple, single, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Vallecillo (1.35 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 11.7 K/9 in 20 IP) is scheduled to start as Carolina aims to even the series 2-2. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 6, ACL Angels 5 Box Score / Game Log Our young men in Arizona improved to 6-2 in this 7-inning affair, bolting out to a 6-1 lead through four innings before nearly giving it all back in the top of the 5th inning. ACL Brewers’ Extras: 20-year old RHP Jesus Rivero (4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks) had a terrific outing in his first start (second appearance) of the year, lifting his season strikeout total to an eye-popping 13 in just 8 1/3 innings pitched. 18-year old RH reliever Daniel Corniel commenced poorly (single, two hit-by-pitches, 3-run homer) before retiring eight of the last nine batters. Every spot in the lineup was productive (led by 22-year old center fielder Reidy Mercado and rehabbing 3B Josh VanMeter combining on four hits and an RBI), with seven batters collecting hits, one walking twice and the remaining batter grabbing an RBI. Don’t be surprised if Mercado makes his way to Carolina soon and VanMeter re-joins the Nashville squad. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 11, DSL Giants Orange 8 Box Score / Game Log A 7-run first inning on six singles and three walks put the Dos Squad in a comfortable position, but the game was 10-7 by the 5th inning as they had to hang on to improve their season record to 4 -4. SS Roderick Flores, big-money signing 2B Filippo Di Turi and 3B Luis Lameda provided most of the offense, combining to go 8-for-13 with a double, two walks, and eight(!) RBIs. On the mound, 16-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 H, 2 BB, 0 Ks) made his second start, exiting with a comfortable 8-2 lead after three innings, while 18-year old RHP Justin Caceres (3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks) overcame steady traffic to lock down the final three innings to earn the save. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 5, DSL Angels 2 Box Score / Game Log The Uno boys continued their hot start, improving to 6-2 on the back of terrific pitching from 18-year old LHP Jose Meneses (3 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and 17-year old RHP Eric Prado (4 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 6 Ks). At the plate, SS Joan Gutierrez continues to show why he’s atop the batting order, reaching base three times to set the tone. 2B Luiyin Alastre added two doubles, but the franchise bosses may be most excited about $1.5 million bonus center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) hitting his first home run in the Brewers’ organization.
