Robert Murray of FanSided wrote a trade rumor roundup this morning and mentioned that the Padres' AJ Preller - one of the most aggressive general managers in baseball - was talking to the White Sox about left-handed starting pitcher Garrett Crochet. Murray then went on to make the argument that the Brewers would be an excellent fit for the 24-year-old starter. Crochet's price would be incredibly high. He won't be arbitration-eligible until after this season and is currently pitching to a 116 ERA+ with 12 strikeouts per nine innings. While the Southsiders don't need to trade Crochet, their major league team is the worst in baseball and their farm system is barren, ranked 20th by MLB.com before the 2024 season. -

Okay, let's put the Phillies behind us and get back to winning series.

As a person who watches a lot of different teams, most of baseball feels feast or famine by design. Given how players achieve success today and the velocity of pitchers, it's harder than ever to scratch runs out. The Brewers do all the things "right" that should lead to consistency - stolen bases, on-base percentage, batting average, decent power - but this is just how baseball is now (to my chagrin).

I don't know if my opinion has changed drastically but the most concerning aspect was the lack of offense. Considering the Phillies lineup, both the starters and relievers acquitted themselves very well against what might be the best team in the NL. Allowing seven runs in three games to Philadelphia is a feat. But when you're swept while doing it...

If the Brewers are able to acquire a 2, I'm moderately comfortable hoping Gasser, Ashby, or Hall slide into that 3 slot, pushing Rea to 4.

Honestly, Rea being anything more than a fourth starter in the second round of the playoffs probably isn't going to cut it. I like Rea as much as anyone but I don't want him pitching more than once per series in October.

I did the editing on this piece and I tend to use a light hand on editing in favor of letting the writer's voice stay at the fore. Personally, I'd write "Contreras drove..." but given the "eh, whatever" nature of the English language, "Contreras would drive..." is fine too because everyone understands what is being said (and that's the real goal here).- 3 replies

I know it's baseball and anything can happen but the Brewers better win this damned game. This time around they face a terrible starting pitcher on top of the terrible White Sox bullpen. Ten runs or bust, boys.

Ken Rosenthal in his recent roundup for The Athletic, mentioned that it's likely the Miami Marlins will be looking to deal pitchers at this trade deadline. They already moved Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres early in the season and with new President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix tasked with rebuilding a painfully depleted Marlins farm system, it's likely he will use the trade deadline to build out the farm system. Three names mentioned are starting pitchers Jesus Luzardo and Braxton Garrett while reliever Tanner Scott is also likely to be dealt. Scott is on an expiring contract this season but starters Luzardo (free agent after 2026 season) and Garrett (free agent after 2028 season) are long-term pieces that would require a hefty prospect price. While it's questionable whether the Brewers will be in the reliever market at the trade deadline (though aren't all contenders?), it's not unreasonable to expect them to look to improve the starting rotation down the stretch.
