    I'm checking in on general site health to see if people are seeing ridiculously slow load times recently. I haven't seen this at all but I know at least one user in the New England area has. I'm in the Twin Cities and have no issues. It wouldn't surprise me if most of you in WI are also not seeing issues. But what about you east coasters? (if things are slow for you, please speak up no matter where you live)

    FWIW, I'm hearing Burnes talks are starting back up in earnest. Still no idea if a deal gets done but after the holiday break when everything basically stopped, real talks are happening again.

    I'm not too worried about the Rays. They're really smart but so are the Brewers. Stearns did alright with the Adames trade.

    Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported in today's roundup that the Rays, despite having a very busy offseason already, are looking to shop arbitration-eligible first baseman Harold Ramirez. Ramirez, 29 years old, has two seasons of team control remaining. The big righty has posted an OPS+ of 121 over his past 896 plate appearances (the 2022 and 2023 seasons). Ramirez has primarily played first base, corner outfield, and DH the past two seasons. His defensive metrics at first base are concerning, though in limited playing time (only ~250 innings the past two seasons). Is this of interest to the Brewers?     Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported in today's roundup that the Rays, despite having a very busy offseason already, are looking to shop arbitration-eligible first baseman Harold Ramirez.     Honestly, maybe I don't miss David Stearns all that much. There's no upside in this deal, IMO, especially in the same offseason when Kevin Kiermaier signed basically the identical deal.

    The stockpiling of fringe relief arms and the fact the 40-man now sits at 39 with several holes that still need filling. It's just a weird series of events. I'm sure more moves are coming but we're now into the new year and we still have no real idea where this offseason is going. I'm not judging, I'm not complaining, it's just... weird. What matters is the roster the team fields on Opening Day but I'm scratching my head a little over how they're going to get there.

    The most concerning aspect for me is that a new stratification of teams has emerged over the past few seasons: the super-spenders. In previous eras, teams like the Yankees and Dodgers were kinda lumped in with the Red Sox, Cubs, Angels, Astros, etc. There was a top-third of baseball that all jostled for payroll supremacy depending on their competitive cycle. But in the past few years, a level above those teams has emerged as the Dodgers and Mets lead the way into ludicrous territory. So now we have a new level above the "large market", occupied by the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees. This only pushes teams like the Brewers down a rung, further from sustained competition.

    I have no strong preference in either direction, just as long as automation is implemented in some form. The reason for a challenge system in my eyes is that umpires tend to prolong outcomes on borderline pitches. A 3-0 borderline pitch is often called a strike. An 0-2 borderline pitch often a ball. But again, no strong preference for one or the other.

    Automated balls/strikes needs to cook a little longer. I haven't seen updated information from 2023 but there have been serious problems with the strike zone being quite unlike the ump-called strike zone. I'm in favor of some level of automation - probably a challenge system - but it really needs to be thoroughly tested before implementation at the MLB level. Unlike previous changes, this one could break the game if implemented poorly.

    Yeah, I'm not tied to Festa in the deal with that comment. He's more of a placeholder for "pretty good starting pitching prospect but definitely not elite". Pick any number of guys who meet that qualification.

    I'm going to quote myself. I think Polanco would be a good fit on the Brewers but maybe it's better if the Brewers ask for something like Lee and Festa for Burnes and Wiemer. Then the Twins can offload Polanco somewhere for prospects. It fills needs pretty well for both teams.

    The Twins feel like they're very much into the idea of half-assing "going for it" this offseason. I don't think Burnes is a great acquisition for them. They certainly need his talents but for one season, it just feels a little forced. I really wish the Orioles would enter the Burnes chat.
