  1. I don't think GM's plan to not be around, but there are a number of reasons for signing a short-sighted, long-term contract. 1) Owner pressure to do something to win and/or put butts in seats. 2) Win now. A WS win will buy a GM time during a re-build. 3) Hope that revenue growth will make bad contracts not so bad.
  2. 4-6 weeks is a pretty long period for a "mild" hamstring injury. So either this thing is more than just a mild strain, or they are giving a maximum recovery time for Luc so it won't have a chance to linger. I really hope its the latter.
  3. He is beyond unlikeable and I was a huge A-Rod defender because I thought he received excessive criticism. Then he came out in 2010-ish and said he used in Texas and then all the details of the Biogenesis thing. The guy is a just a chronic liar and phony. I get that Braun could be called the same but he at least has tried to rehab his image around Milwaukee and in interviews. Serious question...What has A-Rod done? He's taken and continues to take a large chunk of money from the Yankees that could have been used to inflate prices for other FA's that the Brewers might want. So I'm fine with him getting the bonus for hitting 6 more homers, just because. Also he and the other horrible contracts may help reign things in so that the Brewers are in better shape to compete.
  4. Actually the 5 year deal offered to CC would have worked out well enough. I would have been done two years ago, just before the decline. Fielder would have been bad, but at least not as bad as the actual contract.
  5. Other than God Bless America on Sundays the 7th inning stretch takes literally 15 seconds longer. If that. But since it is televised, for whatever reason, the time gets added to the stretch. The other songs are just done while they do the infield grooming and the warmups.
  6. It's not the increased offense, changing pitchers every batter is just annoying to watch. It will make late innings more watchable, which is good for baseball. More than any other proposed changes, I want them make this rule change.
  7. I guess I didn't realize Peralta is a front line starter. Here's how he ranked in just the NL: ERA- 22 IP- 19 WHIP- 33 HR/9- 31 BB/9- 26 K/9- 24 ERA+- 19 While I enjoy Peralta and feel he has a ton of potential, he needs to take a big step this season to be a "front line" starter. Those numbers say #2 starter. If you think of "Front line" as meaning true #1 or worthy of Cy Young votes, then Wily needs a good step up to get there. If you think of "Front line" as solid #1's and #2's then he is there. Either way, he's young and has good stuff so there is room to take that step up.
  8. I'd be a lot happier with this trade if Knebel didn't have arm troubles. Instead of being the 2016 closer, I suspect he will spend 2016 rehabbing from TJ surgery. Sardinas doesn't sound spectacular, but does sound very useful. Diplan is too far away to think about right now, since he hasn't even played in the US yet. However it never hurts to have high ceiling guys in the system.
  9. I can completely understand how someone who is already drunk (especially a man) would think some combination of the following, regardless of the cost of a cab: 1. I can make it home myself 2. I won't get caught 3. I don't want to deal with the hassle of having to come back to get my car tomorrow Of course, absent from this list is any rational weighing of these thoughts with the potential severity of the consequences of attempting to drive home. Anyone dumb enough to drive himself to a place to get drunk without having a predetermined plan to get home is unlikely to make good decisions after he is drunk.
  10. It is an interesting article, but it's hard to know what to make of it. It gives quantification to what we think we see in terms of plate discipline, but what to do with it. If the detailed data could be had for minor league players, then it would be potentially useful for scouting trade targets, but I'm guessing MiLB doesn't have the ballpark tools to get all the data. It does confirm that Braun was pretty terrible in terms of plate discipline last year. Really hope that procedure worked well enough.
  11. Not surprised that they waited until after the season, at least to fill the spot, due to the unexpected death of Seid. In part in deference to the memory of Bruce, but also because a search takes time and it is hard to go outside the organization during the season. However hopefully they have been targeting people during this time and are ready to pounce now that the WS is over. I fully agree about grabbing someone from the Cards. They know how to draft and develop.
  12. The question is what should be done to address the holes and where are new holes likely to occur. 1B is the biggest hole and needs to be addressed first in the off season. LF should still be Davis' to lose. Para can come in as a defensive replacement and start against some righties. No need for a strict platoon as Davis doesn't have extreme splits. SS is a tough call. Segura really needs to work on his approach, otherwise hopefully someone can develop in the minors. I can't see trying to find a FA this off season to start at short. Future holes: 3B has been ignored for too long, and A-Ram isn't getting any younger or healthier. They at least need a backup plan. 2B - Scooter was decent, but much of his production was in an insanely good June. Splits are extreme, so either a good righty 2B platoon partner is needed, or Scooter needs to figure out lefties.
  13. It's not like they had a choice. There was only one team left when the Brewers were left holding the bag. Isn't that the reason they were in Nashville and Huntsville for so long? Seriously, that stadium looks barely Northwoods quality.
  14. Given the situation, this news is about as good as can be hoped for. Hopefully this won't have any lasting effects on his career. Or on Fiers career for that matter. If there's ever a time to be glad Fires doesn't throw in the upper 90's, this is it.
  15. There was the zoot suit collapse in 2001. 38-34 after sweeping the Cubs and donning the suits for a 4 game set at Pittsburgh, where they started a 5-22 stretch on route to a 30-60 finish.
  16. Think about how far away a runner stealing second is when the catcher throws the ball, and that runner is going full tilt towards second. On the other side, if the guy takes a big secondary lead (especially if there is something like a failed sacrifice) and is leaning the other way, he'd only need to be about half as far away as the guy stealing to be in range of the catcher. The other key is the fielder has to be in position to cover the bag. That probably limits this from happening a lot more often.
  17. Except Fiers has no normal level. He is either the best starting pitcher in baseball when he's on a stretch like this, or he is not effective at all (like the end of the 2012 season.) Ok, then I'd say that there is too much of a risk that he will slip to ineffective to put into the playoff rotation. The last spot for the playoffs should come down to Garza or Nelson, and while Garza was starting to get into a groove before the injury, Nelson has been consistently good in every game except the one marred by Segura's tragedy. I just think Nelson is the better option.
  18. I don't think that's clear at all. That's why I want to see all 6 start, and make that decision at the end of the year. For example, if Fiers is still this dominant a month from now, I put him in the playoff rotation. If Peralta keeps doing what he's doing, I have him in the rotation. It's all about health and performance, and there's no way I pencil in Lohse, Garza, and Yo this early. This is about winning a World Series, not codifying a couple veterans. At this point I can't see any way Peralta is not in the playoff rotation. I think the best bet at the moment is Yo, Lohse, Peralta and Nelson. Fiers and Garza to the pen. With Garza coming off an injury it makes sense, and I just expect Fiers to return to normal levels (still good, but not completely lights out). If he doesn't, then the choice gets more difficult.
  19. I didn't join Brewerfan.net to blow any Cardinal trumpets. Just swapping baseball talk and offering an opinion like everyone else. You seem to regard the Cards as some kind of baseball monolith. That's your opinion. I just don't happen to share it. OK? Baseball monolith, no. But after ruining the best two season the Brewers ever had, they are the red and white boogiemen until proven otherwise.
  20. Fiers is only only the 5th Brewer's pitcher to have 14+ strikeouts in a game and he's done it in 6 innings. 14 of 18 outs via the K. Too bad his pitch count is up there or he'd be going for team or even MLB record.
  21. 1) Total TV revenue sharing. Teams will not be allow to own their own network to hide the revenue, or the books will have to be fully open to all owners. 2) PEDs - any player suspended for PEDs will have a one year period after their suspension ends where their contract is not guaranteed. Teams will be totally off the hook for cutting a player during this period. After that, the contract returns to the guaranteed status. 3) Replay - the replay process shall take no more than one minute from the time the manager leaves the dugout to the time the call is made. If the replay officials can't tell by then, the call stands. 4) Earlier starts for World Series games, at least for Saturday and Sunday games. This will give young kids a better chance of seeing the whole game. 5) Ban tobacco use by players and coaches while they are in the stadium, and extend this down to all minor levels.
  22. 6 out of 9 down the stretch will be tough, especially when the offense has been having trouble putting up runs and the tired bullpen well need to cover 2-3 innings per game. There just isn't much margin for error. Still it would be cool to have a Brewer with a 20 win season, and if he does it, it would certainly bode well for winning the division.
  23. "Perfectly safe" is a big stretch for just about any drug. The can of Pandora's boxes you want to open just isn't worth it. First how would you be able to tell a person using it under relatively safe protocols vs one who is pushing things to get any sort of edge possible? Second since they do provide an advantage, if you allow them you essentially make them mandatory. Banning them completely may not be the perfect solution, but it is the best and safest option there is right now.
  24. Other than occasional starts, I think Parra will be used as defensive replacement (particularly on double switches). In this situation, do you think the Brewers will just put him in left, or put him in right and move Braun to left? Braun had quite a few assists while playing in left, and Parra has great arm for playing in right. Runners will be hard pressed to try to take the extra base with this outfield. The worst part of trading Haniger is that it means a fairly high draft pick only progressed enough to be worth half a MLB 4th outfielder.
  25. One report had him ranked #6 on the Cardinals prospect list. This was their quote on him: If Masterson returns to last year's form then I don't like this trade. If he continues to start and average 5 innings and have a 1.65 WHIP, then this trade sounds pretty good.
