  1. The first NBA player to shatter a backboard was Chuck Conners (The Rifleman). He played briefly for the Boston Celtics & broke the board in pregame warmups in 1946. No record of whether he did any 360 degree spins on his way to the hoop.
  2. Yeah, something like that. A straight swap for Urias or Hiura doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
  3. Some good stuff here. I originally liked the idea of adding Thomas but originally thought he was a rental. With three years of control No way do you ante up for him with the OF talent already in the system. Part of the problem is some of the guys at Biloxi, while they still have a chance, aren't putting up the type of season where there would be the trade value you'd like (Murray, Valerio, Warren, Clarke). And I'm not much interested in dealing Zamora. I could see them dealing Robert Moore who has the high draft-pick pedigree, but again it's not a guy who's having a stellar season. For me Black is, if not off the table, just barely hanging on the edge of it. Love the last paragraph. Jarvis had an ugly 1st appearance in Nashville. But IMO there's little question they'd be better off hanging on to him at this point when compared to what I suspect he'd bring. The obsession with adding BP arms needs to be put on hold. Would much rather roll with the depth provided by Andrews, Uribe, J Wilson, and the potential extra arm when they go back to a 5-man rotation. Strzelecki might figure things out too.
  4. When you hear about how a team "comes out" at the beginning of a game that's usually a phrase reserved for Football or basketball. I just get the feeling it's important today, after what happened late in Saturdays' game. The good news is they've been pretty good at bouncing back from frustrating moments. I wonder if Houser is available for a batter or 3 if need be?
  5. I don't think they'll totally stand pat. Within reason, I'm fine with them looking to add. I agree I'd rather not see them add a reliever. I'm hoping the recent auditions for Uribe & Andrews are an indication that they'll stay in-house.
  6. Yeah, they've been good. Just distressing to see us helping them out today, & in the 9th yesterday.
  7. Offensively, he pretty much is JAG. But I was really impressed with his ABs the first month of the season. Keep our fingers crossed I guess. Was shocked to see his recent defensive "slump" as I've been very impressed with the glove.
  8. I really felt he's still an unfinished product due mostly to the lack of command, but he didn't show that today. If he gets enough work & is able to continue to be around the plate with both pitches he should stay. Seeing them up close, Cincy has obvious young talent that puts up really good ABs for their relative youth. They do a terrific job of taking advantage of opportunities. But I have to admit the "relentless" comments are wearing a little thin with me. They were relentless Friday night only because we walked two men in the 9th with a 5 run lead. They were relentless today after falling behind 4-1 because De La Cruz reached on a throwing error (no way was that a hit) followed by a walk. Maybe Anderson is another positive? His ABs the last couple days look a lot like what he was attempting to do in April, and the discipline seems to be slowly coming back.
  9. As the game's evolved, it's becoming more difficult to umpire a baseball game. Same thing (even though the sports are drastically different) in Hoops & football, in that as the rule book gets thicker it'll become more & more maddening to put up with. Pretty much inevitable, unfortunately.
  10. In the post I was responding to the term "simple single" was referred to as "bile-soaked red meat". Is THAT OK? If you think I was hard on the poster I respect that opinion, although I've seen a lot of stuff on here that makes that look tame. Just don't think I'm doing anything to defend Tellez.
  11. If that's how you interpreted that I can't do anything about it. Again, nothing to do with Tellez.
  12. The strange thing is, I think we agree with each other. There's nothing "simple" about hitting a single. If it was, this would BE like slowpitch softball. "HIT A SINGLE!!!!! IT"S SIMPLE!!!!! No, it isn't. That's what was being ridiculed.
  13. I haven't seen a ton of Blacks' work defensively but from what I've learned I'm a little skeptical too. Too early to say but it wouldn't shock me if he gets tried at 1B at some point.
  14. That was a ridicule of the "simple single" phrase, how it reminded me of slowpitch softball. It had nothing to do with defending Tellez.
  15. I re-read my post, trying to find an insinuation that Tellez is "the answer". Couldn't find anything.
  16. On paper he could be the frontrunner assuming Allen goes from pro-am (college) to pro. Nate White will have a leg up on him joining the program this season, but from what I ascertain Dupree is a more physical runner & certainly was challenged by playing at a higher level in HS. I guess we'll see evidence of White's readiness by whether he gets snaps as the 3rd TB this season or if he's behind someone like Grover Bortolotti or Cade Yacamelli. Then there's always the magic portal if there's immediate team success in '23 joined by the corresponding media attention + top two TB's leaving.
  17. Controlling the running game this weekend is going to be important. This team not only tries to pick up steals but is aggressive in taking the extra base on balls to the OF. I'm concerned about Yelich particularily. We're starting to show some success when getting into a teams' bullpen. There are some opportunities in innings 6-8 this weekend.
  18. They tried. Davis didn't know how to react, so he talked to Wilmer Flores who told him to start bawling.
  19. That Shaw team had a lot of confidence in the "out-getter" philosophy, fueled by shift strategy & being able to matchup by using 37 pitchers per game (or so it seemed lol). I think they were so pumped at the idea of adding Moustakas they felt they could hide Shaw at 2B & actually did a pretty good job of it. I agree, it's way too far-fetched to move Yelich now. Maybe he'll fill the spot down the road. If Jef Quero works out maybe even Contreras gets a look there someday (although Yelich is a better option IMO). Black winding up at 1B wouldn't surprise me. I believe you're correct that he hasn't played there this season. It was reported that Jahmai Jones worked out at 1B before Thursdays' game.
  20. My favorite was "simple single"😄. Reminds me of the beer keg at 2nd base, potato salad in the dugout, and the unlimited arc. Drafting too many middle INF is a valid criticism, but at this point needs to play itself out before it can be deemed as some sort of crippler to future seasons. Tellez being what he is in 2023 certainly has hurt. They DID draft corner guys (Alex Binelas & Xavier Warren) rather high in recent seasons. One was dealt for a decent season from Hunter Renfroe. The other looks like a miss so far.
  21. Joey has had a defensive miscue or two that he hadn't been committing earlier. That combined with the recent ABs may make it time to do this.
  22. Alzolay. Isn't that the stuff they found in the soil that forced the government to evacuate that mining town in Oklahoma? Peralta seems to have hit a real speed bump in his development. That & Woodruff being unavailable have gone a long way towards the bullpen being stressed more than you'd like.
  23. A feel for when to do that & when not to is so important. Miller & Anderson did a poor job of it in the 8th inning yesterday.
