  1. Yeah. Wainwright I'm sure has some of those qualities, but you usually don't get a lot of benefit from those intangibles from a starting pitcher.
  2. They almost certainly don't. If it were to happen, Anderson going would make more sense then Tellez IMO, but if compelled to do so they probably would've by now.
  3. That's the thing. I think his timing is OK now, he's staying on the ball pretty well, but just about everything is on the ground. Even the ball he hit hard Sunday when he had the bad fortune of the 1B playing on the bag, hit well but not elevated. Black is obviously a more talented guy offensively. But it's out of the norm for them to throw someone on a playoff roster who has no experience. We'll see if he's here when N'Villes' season ends, that would be telltale. Wouldn't be against it but I doubt it.
  4. It was really strange, after year after year of having good teams, to see them in September playing a game & just kinda being "out there" w/o much intensity. Fun, though.😁
  5. I'd say the hand placement WAS a detriment for quite a while, and adjustments can be made, even at the MLB level. I suppose the flip side is he was dealing with the best pitchers in the world, and at his level of (in)experience it would've been too much to throw at him up here, as it probably involves more than just the hands.. Bottom line, he needed to retool, and of course Nashville is a much better place for that to happen.
  6. Sometimes it's hard to see incremental changes in a stance or swing. But holy cow is that hand placement ever obvious. Kudos to Al LeBoeuf, I guess. Not sure exactly what that says about Timmons/Dawson.
  7. That was my only nit-pick of the night. I'm sure the company line would go along the lines of "he just got back from the IL", and that's actually not a bad reason to pull him. But he struggled the first 2-3 innings, after that settled down & was REAL good, and had I think 6-7-8 due up in the 7th. Wasn't shocked they pulled him, but sorta disappointed.
  8. I've been very impressed by him, he has obvious talent & just oozes moxie. But those advanced stats you brought up.........just wow.😲
  9. That's where it's at, IMO. If he's locating like he needs to he should get ground balls. The worst starts I recall for him (Toronto & I think someone else) he got a lot of solidly-hit grounders that were hit where they ain't. I'd feel better if Turang was out there in that scenario, but Monasterio has looked pretty good at 2B & Donaldson is fine at 3B. Santana has also been real good with the glove. Glad to see people noticing that. I'll guess Caratini catches today, freeing up DH for Contreras since I'm betting Tellez is in the lineup Thursday.
  10. I've known about Navarretos' defensive moxie, but this is the first time I've seen someone go into such great detail about him. Thanks. Would you comp him to a Marty Maldonado? Given the huge boost Monasterio has given the Brewers, it's always worth it to keep a finger on the pulse of the "under the radar" guys. Still keeping a watchful eye on my guy Devanney. Again, thanks for a terrific post.
  11. That was touched on awhile back. He wants 2 LHP in the pen. Look at the other candidates.
  12. He certainly isn't. The walk in the 9th ticked me off. But I know he isn't as bad as some try to make him out to be, because that would be impossible. The Eric Sogard of the bullpen, I guess.
  13. There's no way CC is sending Payamps out for a 2nd inning at this stage if he doesn't have to.
  14. I dunno. I think it's Yadi. On the ball hit by Canha in front of the plate, I'm sure he would've turned that into a triple play, saving one of the outs for the next inning.
  15. I really believe he'll get to the point where that's not the case. Actually, when they first promoted him I thought the command would be worse than it's been. Fortunately he has the stuff to overcome the growing pains.
  16. So the last time they hit 4 doubles in a row was 1974. I'll go with May, Briggs, Scott & Darrell Porter. Loved the add-on runs, but particularly the manufactured one in the 8th. We all know how hard Taylors' been hitting the ball, but he drew a nice walk to lead off. Second of the game for someone who seldom does that. Real nice job. Fun to crank up the running game vs these guys, since the last time you could do that was in the 1880s, before Molina. Monasterio is going to be at 2B vs LHP, as he should be. Very nice to see him transition there smoothly after all that time at third. Great job on the Goldschmidt ball. Uribe was kind of a microcosm in his inning. Walking a guy w/a lead after going 0-2 is a big no-no. But then he sets his jaw after the WP & is impressive. Gonna be fun to watch him grow. Wasn't going to say this because he had a nice game, but after the leadoff double by Santana Adames pulls a ground ball to short. On the first pitch. UUUGGGHH. I saw he hit himself in the head after being thrown out. Next time, maybe hit yourself in the head BEFORE the AB. You might hit the "on" button. But like I said, other than that he had a nice night. Seems to be a real positive mentor for Uribe.
  17. It's impressive when you look at the MLB & AAA levels, how many OFs they have that can play CF. I mean legitimately play it well.
  18. Unless it's a lengthy bottom of the 1st I think they should consider giving Megill 2 innings.
  19. They finished that season 4-10 with CC resting people periodically. It's a balancing act. You obviously want to give folks a blow here & there when given the opportunity, but when you take your foot off the gas it can be tough to ramp it back up.
  20. I also think Navarreto has an inside track on backup C next year. That's assuming they don't sign another Caratini-type. But if not it would make for a nice competition; Henry has had a good year. I think Devanney can play SS at the MLB level acceptably. From all accounts Black's played a nice 3B at AAA. If I had to guess he'll be at one corner or the other in Milwaukee once the smoke clears. I've never gotten a good handle on what I think his *best* position is, though.
  21. That's where I think Clarke needs to hang his hat to make it to the show. If he can catch as well as play 1B there's at least some versatility in this age of the 4-man bench. I've gotten a real kick out of his HR binge this summer. looking forward to seeing how he does in the fall. Didn't expect to see him selected.
  22. Long term, it wouldn't. I'm saying if he suddenly comes here & gets, say, 2 or 3 ABs a week after getting 4-5 a day, while suddenly facing MLB pitching, it'll be really difficult to maintain any kind of a groove, like he's in right now. Your last point, we'll never know. Certainly plausible. At the same time a lot of fans want to DFA a lot of guys when they remember recent failures. Tellez, I wouldn't cry if he was removed. But he reached base three times a couple games ago. If the 1B wasn't holding the runner Sunday the ball he hit is a likely double to tie the game. But I certainly think Black is a better hitter, big picture. Is he NOW? Like you said, maybe the FO doesn't think he's there yet.
  23. God Bless ya, but I don't think that's anywhere close to being true. Again, agree to dis. It's hard to argue they weren't bad tonite, but he had something to do with that. As far as saying they ARE bad, there have been a lot of games in the last six weeks that fly in the face of that. I enjoy the back & forth as long as it's with thinking fans. No antagonism felt.
  24. I think it matters A LOT. Agree to disagree. Sitting won't stunt his growth long term, but if he's putting up good ABs in Nashville, that probably won't continue here if he suddenly stops getting them. Especially considering the bump up in pitching. What gets factored in though, is once Nashville is done (Sunday) THEN you may as well add him. But I have no idea what their thinking is regarding that. Don't know about the service time thingie. It IS important to them. It kinda needs to be.
  25. No, he was Adam Wainwright incarnated, which unfortunately is pretty good. Like I said, they were too impatient. The old Wainwright does that to people. Unfortunately that's who was there. They have way too many games like this for my taste, too. But when you compare us to other teams, don't forget to compare the pitching staffs, too. I'd love to be strong in both areas. That's tough to do with the resources at hand. Bottom line, 84-66. AFA waiting for the next DP, I'll assume you mean hit & run and/or bunting. I love both, as long as it's the right combination at the plate & bases. There are probably too many on the team that simply are bad bunters. I'm not happy about that. Maybe it's just the way I'm wired, but having a team that loses a lot of games 7-6 or 10-8 would piss me off even more, because those teams IMO have a much less chance of going anywhere than the other way around. We'll all get over it, brother.😐
