  1. It’s a real fine game to play when you’re “going for it” this season, yet decline to play your best players as often as possible. Especially when you missed the playoffs by a single game last season… And it is mitigation when speaking about service time and team control, as the year of control that would be lost by having Frelick on the OD roster would be gained right back and then some with an extension. Would a few extra dollars be involved in the early years? Yes. But then you’re looking at potentially saving money on the back end in addition to gaining valuable cost certainty. This is why you’ve seen smart FO’s such as the Braves, D-backs, etc. adopt this tact recently… As for the odds, I obviously don’t have a precise figure. But Steven Kwan, who is probably Frelick’s closest comparable atm, put up a 5.5 WAR last season... So, when things are as close as they were last year and are looking to be this year in the NL, those 2-3 weeks could literally be the difference between making the playoffs and missing the playoffs. It’s one thing if you have a Tyrone Taylor to fill in the gaps during those 2 weeks to couple months; it’s an entirely different matter, however, when you’re looking at trying to get by with some combination of Tyler Naquin, Brian Anderson, and Owen Miller in the OF…
  2. 80+% FT shooter, which generally portends to improvement from the three point line. Also shot .403% from three over February/March. So, not too worried about his shooting ability. I think 35% would be fine from him.
  3. I think Varland is a good candidate to make the team after reading this.
  4. Nope they made the jump to be DI last season. Rohde is legit.
  5. I'm willing to be a little more patient with Bush as he at least generates whiffs and strikes guys out.
  6. And there it is…Really think he would be a great fit for this team at the 3 as a supplementary ball handler to Chucky. Max would then be able to come off the bench, and we’d be pretty much set at G. Assuming Wahl comes back, the only piece we’d be missing is a defensive/rim protector type in the front court. Gus should help negate our current Gilmore problem on offense, but probably not on defense.
  7. I don’t know about ”it’s only 2-3 weeks”. As we saw last year, when we missed the playoffs by a single game, games in April mean every bit as they do in September. I’m of the opinion that you play your best players as soon and as often as you can. I get the service time ramifications are big for a small market club such as the Brewers. However, the Brewers could easily mitigate this by offering an extension to Frelick at some point during the season once he’s proven himself and buy out a couple of his free agent years.
  8. Power starting to come along now for Winker. Hope Counsell continues to hit him in the two slot after Yelich against RHP. He fits there so much better than Willy.
  9. Yep. You can definitely see it when the starting 5 is all on the floor and healthy. What ultimately doomed them (and continues to hurt them) is lack of depth. Gilmore and Davis can't be your top reserves if you have designs on competing in the BIG and then in the NCAA tournament. Hopefully Gard is able to take care of that in the transfer portal.
  10. Yep. Frustrating because he was a guy you really thought could take the next step. Hopefully, he does just that and figures it out in AAA.
  11. Spring training means so little, but I am starting to get nervous about the pen other than Devin. Oh well, at least Winker is starting to heat up...
  12. Wiemer is actually ineligible for the prospect promotion incentive as he only made Pipeline’s top 100 and not BA’s or ESPN’s (need at least 2/3). I still think Frelick, who is eligible for the PPI and is much safer offensively, is more likely to end up on the OD roster, particularly after his performance in the WBC.
  13. One word should suffice here: YES. Turn MLB into NFL/NBA.
  14. Wow. Edwin Diaz might've just blown out his knee in PR's celebration. Would be a fairly big impact for the NL playoff picture.
  15. I'm sure they're glad DR got bounced tonight and Willy can return to camp now. No reason Pena/Franco/Marte should have been playing over him.
  16. A carryover from last season. You figure it has to turn for him at some point, and when it does, look out…
  17. Badgers are actually the 2 seed instead of Liberty. NCAA screwed up.
  18. 2nd tourney miss in 25 years. Making the tourney every year is the minimum expectation that’s been set for this program. Gard shouldn’t be fired, but he needs to ensure that one year from now that we aren’t left with this same sinking feeling. Make no mistake, though, this team didn’t deserve to make the tournament. They had every opportunity and just couldn’t get the job done. Some of it was luck (e.g., Kansas, Michigan) but a lot of it was also a lack of talent. No reason whatsoever why this program should have two walk-ons in the rotation. Hopefully Gard remedies those deficiencies this offseason. His job likely depends on it. I continue to have no doubts about him as a coach, but that is only one part of the equation…
  19. I’ll be mad if they hold him down for any longer than a couple weeks to gain the extra year of control. Naquin ain’t a reason to do so.
  20. That could be too late, though. Say he reaches the majors on OD next year like his comparables, Rodriguez and Walker (likely)....You're looking at a whole season or so of MLB production where he can increase his value significantly. So, instead of a deal like Corbin Carroll's, a deal in the offseason of 2024-2025 could be more like the 14 years $400 million that Julio Rodriguez got last August. Suffice to say, the Brewers won't ever be paying that kind of money... This is a case where, if he keeps progressing on his current trajectory, you lock him up sooner than later. It seems risky, but that's the type of risk a small-market club like the Brewers needs to take to keep this kind of talent.
  21. Better to get it out now than during the season I guess.
  22. Tantalizing stuff from Uribe. A carry over from the AFL. Too bad he came in with no shot to make the OD roster. Hopefully he’ll get the call sooner than later.
  23. Fair. I also don't expect to see Chourio in 2023, though I do think there's a decent chance he forces the issue with his play. It does show the sooner the better in extending him, though. You wait too long and you end up having a Julio Rodriguez situation (14 yrs, $400 million), at which point it's over for the Brewers. If he continues to mash in A+/AA to start the season, I would probably commence negotiations.
  24. And that first at-bat by Winker is why I absolutely love that we traded for him. Constantly fouling off and taking near-misses to draw a 10 pitch walk. Sorely missing from our lineup last season.
  25. There's what you're looking at for Jackson Chourio next spring...
