  1. Well, the Dodgers are definitely trying to reset the luxury tax this season... Brewers could have done this but I'd rather have the younger Jesse Winker. But if anyone's going to stave off Martinez's seeming decline, it would be the Dodgers...
  2. Maybe we have a chance with Chourio, Frelick, etc. now that Stearns isn't covertly working for the Mets on our dime, while heading our baseball operations. .
  3. Honestly, the bullpen is more of a priority at this point than 3B. They can be opportunistic, but they don't have to go out and be stupid by signing Drury to a 3-4 year contract...Urias is a fine 3Bman. If the Red Sox make Devers available, then that's a different story...
  4. I don't see it. Swanson isn't that good and they lost Contreras...Their starting pitching doesn't even compare to ours.
  5. Of course it's possible, but the question should be: is it likely? I really don't think so. Age and trends (velocity, K%, BB%, etc.) are all working against Chapman here. When he was dominant, he relied on overwhelming hitters with his otherworldly 103 MPH fastball. Now, he sits in the upper 90s, where a significant portion of MLB relievers also reside. And, again, there's the fact that he's a huge cancer in the clubhouse....
  6. I don't think a Rodgers trade is going to happen this offseason. As @UpandIn said, his struggles this season are largely a result of a substandard Oline/young WR core and the thumb injury, and not a decline in his actual physical abilities, other than his speed. The people that matter (Gutekunst and LaFleur) are all saying the same thing they said last offseason re. wanting Rodgers back. And the way Rodgers' contract is structured essentially makes it a two-three year commitment between player and team. We should probably expect him to retire as a Green Bay Packer at this point.
  7. Reports that Joe Barry is well on his way out (shocking I know), and that Jim Leonhard is the most likely candidate to take over. If I had to bet money right now, that's where it would be, with Leonhard already being LaFleur's top choice for the job in 2021.
  8. Aroldis Chapman is an unlikely candidate to bounce back. His K% has steadily decreased since 2020, while his BB% has steadily increased. This year, he struck out a career low 26.9% and walked a career high 17.5%. His peripherals have all declined during the same period, capped by a career high 4.57 FIP this season. He may still throw in the upper 90s, but you can say the same thing for most relievers nowadays. And upper 90s is significantly less than his peak when he averaged 101 mph on his fastball in 2016. I'd much rather go for a reunion with Taylor Rogers, or sign Matt Moore. The Dodgers can have him. They tried the same thing with Kimbrel last season, and look how that worked out. And Kimbrel's numbers were better than Chapman's. Not to mention he's a huge cancer in the clubhouse.
  9. Difference between Chris Carter and Joey Gallo is that Gallo is a plus runner and plays GG defense. Why he still put up a 4.5 WAR despite those numbers. Of course, he couldn't even put up those numbers and was a negative defender this season per Fangraphs. He's about the last player that the Brewers should be signing at this point.
  10. Exactly. The Brewers almost always make a signing later in the offseason, when the market has died down and they're able to find better value (Grandal, Wong, JBJ, McCutchen, etc.). I see no reason to think this offseason will be any different.
  11. Time to replicate with William Contreras! Except Contreras can keep his offense...
  12. Good spot for him. Though, Alvarez is going to overtake him pretty quickly, if not by opening day. Too bad his offense/power declined as much as it did with the Brewers, as his defensive improvement was impressive.
  13. Yeah, with the way this market has been trending, I thought Rodon was going to get over $200 million. Also, it's really important that he didn't end up with the Cardinals as they were rumored to be showing interest. Our advantage in starting pitching is what gives us a shot in the division despite the Cards having Arenado and Goldschmidt.
  14. He "ended the season horribly"? His September slash line was: .302/.393/.434 (61 PAs), while his October slash line was: .429/.500/.786 (16 PAs). June and August were bad months for him, but overall a 3.1 WAR is good. Not elite, but good. I'm willing to give him a pass for his slight downturn in SLG as he played through a thumb injury for a significant chunk of the season. Plus, he's still only 25 years old. I do think he would be better suited for 2B, but other than Turner or maybe Drury, I don't see what options we have.
  15. He was pretty much limited to 3B for us last year and put up a -3.9 fDWAR and a -4 OAA. He was our worst infield defender other than Wong and Tellez. On the whole, he was only worth 0.6 fWAR, and was outpaced by Keston Hiura. He may have been one of our better hitters against LHP last year, but that's not saying much as we were among the worst teams against LHP. If he wants to stay on the roster, he simply has to do better than a .764 OPS against LHP. It's quite possible that he'll return to his career line of .830, and that's why I think he'll be on the OD roster, but he's definitely on the hot seat.
  16. As I said, the Braves didn't win the World Series because of Jorge Soler, even though he was the World Series MVP. They won because 4-6 of their other hitters (Rosario, Pederson, Freeman, D'Arnaud, etc.) also got hot at the same time. Our hitters? The exact opposite. So, no, adding Jorge Soler would not have won us the World Series in 2021. You brought up CC. What he did was probably the single greatest performance by a trade deadline acquisition in MLB history, and it brought us our first postseason appearance in 26 years. I'm glad we gave up Brantley and LaPorta for that. But that's not the typical scenario.... There's a significant difference between hoarding prospects and drafting and developing as a small market franchise....
  17. Okay. Well, that's a stance that I (and I suspect most others) will have to disagree with. Though, for all we know, a team could have wanted Chourio at the time, too. Frelick may not be "elite" but he's top 100 for a reason. I don't regret trading those guys for CC. But, then again, not every player acquired at the deadline is capable of single handedly carrying a team to the playoffs. Certainly not the guys you just listed. If the Brewers are going to win a World Series, they're going to have to do so by drafting and developing and smart, targeted spending, not by trading their best prospects for the Soler's, Gallo's, and Marte's of the world.
  18. I know about Schwarber. But I don't think it's accurate that JBJ was the single biggest reason we were unable to obtain those guys. Rather, it's the fact that those guys costed prospects and that the trading team had to be interested enough in our prospects compared to other contenders at a time when our farm system was ranked bottom 3 in the entire majors. Would you have been happy trading Frelick, Turang, or Mitchell for Gallo, Marte, or Soler? I sure wouldn't have, as none of those guys would have likely been enough on their own to win us the World Series that year. Soler was the World Series MVP, but the Braves won because Rosario, Freeman, D'Arnaud, etc. all went gangbusters during the playoffs whereas all of our hitters did the exact opposite.
  19. I don't think there's any scenario in which the Cubs would have actually traded those players to us... Plus we made calls on Scherzer and Reynolds. We were outbid and rebuffed...
  20. People on this very site. It wasn't unanimous for sure, but there were plenty of people who liked the signing at the time, myself included. I don't think anyone expected him to be more than average with the bat, as the majority of his value has always come from his GG defense in the OF. What we didn't expect (and what there was no indication for) was him suddenly becoming the worst hitter in the majors, to the point where it negated all of his defensive value. I know the 2017-2020 version of JBJ would have been quite helpful for us this past season with Cain completely losing it...
  21. With JBJ, A LOT of people liked that signing at the time as insurance for the aging and oft-injured Lorenzo Cain. Nobody foresaw him suddenly ceasing to be a major league hitter at the age of 31. McCutchen, I'll give you. That signing never made sense from the start and became worse by how they decided to persistently hit him cleanup against RHP.
  22. Justin Turner, Brandon Drury, Evan Longoria, Adam Duvall, Robbie Grossman, Wil Myers, Trey Mancini, Edwin Rios, Taylor Rogers, Andrew Chafin, Matt Moore, Cory Knebel, Michael Fulmer, Reyes Moronto, Chad Green, Trevor May, etc. Any of those guys I could see the Brewers being interested in and are not out of their price range. "Second-tier" may be too loose of a term here as not all of these guys are that level, but they represent the next-best options now that the premier free agents have largely signed and would add something to the team for next season.
  23. But those were still FA signings were they not? It seems to me you're telling us that they won't sign anyone. That's where I disagree. And they did sign Yasmani Grandal, Mike Moustakas, and Avi Garcia in the offseasons before that, too. Talk to me when it's late February and all of the second-tier FA options are gone. Because we're never going to be involved in the 10 year megadeals that the big markets have been doling out like candy over the last couple weeks. Do you have particular reason to think they're going to spend more than $20 million less than they did last season, when they have repeatedly said they're going into this season to compete and return to the playoffs?
