  1. I went to both Marquette and UW-Madison. I went to Marquette my freshman year. There is a rule that you have to be in the dorms for two years and no (!) girls allowed on your floor after 10:00 pm. I had my girlfriend in town and staying over and we got caught. They took us down to the office and made us stay there for an hour before forcing her to stay with some random girl she didn't know. It was one of the most embarrassing nights I've ever had. I said I wasn't going to do another year of living within a babysitting service when I can go to UW for $7,000 a year (and much more interesting electives), so I transferred and had a blast in Madison. You only have to be in the dorms for one year in Madison, with no coed restrictions. The reasons may sound petty, but Madison was a much more fun town (minus the Brewers) and I got to double major and graduate with honors. That said, if someone has no discipline and gets completely caught up in the nightlife, your schooling will suffer. But I just loved the football and basketball games, along with an actual campus (sorry. Marquette is just some buildings up against Wisconsin Ave.) and the ability to travel much farther around the city than I could at Marquette. There are more attractive women, more majors, more class choices, better atmosphere, and for much less money. That's my two cents. Others might disagree, but that was my experience.
  2. It's Friday night and I stayed in and haven't gotten drunk. This is a fairly new concept and not as relaxing as I thought it might be.
  3. Chuck Norris as Scott Hatteberg. The best in the business.
  4. I get the concept about franchises and all of that. However, it would be weird to me if, for example, the Brewers eventually shipped up and left town for Oklahoma City. Then Milwaukee gets a new franchise while Oklahoma City has the retired numbers of Yount, Molitor, and even Braun for their team. It just wouldn't feel right to me. I guess it's my opinion that players should me more identified where fans grew up loving them. By the responses, I can tell that I am in the minority. I'm not attacking anyone for what they think. I just think a heck of a lot more people in Wisconsin love(d) Warren Spahn than in Georgia. In response to Cub fans mocking us, I will passionately state that I wouldn't care one bit about what Cub fans thought about whose numbers are retired in Milwaukee. Nothing a Cub fan thinks about my team will ever penetrate my skin.
  5. True, but under my original line of thinking, he should have his number retired in Milwaukee for what he did with the Milwaukee Braves. However, that is probably not the case. It was the right move for the wrong reason. Also, Rollie fingers' number is retired by the A's. Mathews and Spahn do not have their numbers retired in Milwaukee.
  6. I honestly think that Let the Right One In may be the best vampire film I've seen since Werner Herzog took on Nosferatu. It is difficult to come up with a new spin on such a played out premise, but this film really did. I saw about 35-40 films from this year (including the Oscar nominees) and i think The Wrestler, The dark Knight, In Bruges, Let the Right One In, Slumdog Millionaire, and Man On Wire were probably my top picks (in no particular order).
  7. Vincent Bugliosi convinced me that Oswald acted alone. It's about the only thing Bill Hicks and I disagree on.
  8. I have no idea how this story could be told in less that six hours. However, Alan Moore gave this script his blessing, unlike V for Vendetta and From Hell. Doctor Manhattan and Blake look perfect to me, but the guy playing Ozymandias looks off. I'm cautiously optimistic.
  9. Well, it's basically the same team we had last year before CC, but we are swapping Sheets for Gallardo and Gagne for Hoffman. Yes, there are a few other differences with the bullpen and our reserve position players, but I was optimistic last year, so I'll be optimistic this year. I wish Benny the best.
  10. This has bugged me for a number of years. A friend of mine is big Braves fan. I am always quick to cite two of the retired numbers on Atlanta's outfield wall: Eddie Mathews: Played in Atlanta for only one season. Warren Spahn: Never played in Atlanta This brings me to the question: Can a city really champion players who never/barely played there? I would love to see Spahn and Mathews numbers retired in Milwaukee, but the franchise seems to take precedence. Those players were never loved in Atlanta the way they were in Milwaukee. Just because the mascot name is the same really doesn't have any correlation to the place they had their great moments. Why doesn't Atlanta retire Babe Ruth's number? He played for the Boston Braves in 1935. Obviously, players are being associated with the franchise rather than the city, but is this right? Do you agree. Obviously, I do not.
  11. Wouldn't you figure the Brewers' all time wins leader would get more than 23 %? Also, Oglive is a travesty. He was so solid and hit what was, in my humble opinion, the biggest home run in Brewers history (Game 5 vs. Angels). Burdette, Logan, and Adcock should all be in. And in a semi-non-sequitor, Cecil Cooper's number should be retired by the club (especially with Sheets leaving).
  12. That was nuts. I swore I saw Ron Artest in there.
  13. Fukedome and an 9th round and 10th round pick next year Good trade. This may sound idiotic, but i refuse to have cubs on my fantasy team. I just won't root for any of them. It's worked out well- I finished first in my 12 team league last year and am 2nd right now.
  14. I've gotten the opportunity to review films in the past, so I'm sorry if this is too much. I just get so damn excited to talk about great films. See rottentomatoes.com for further reference on some of these. In reference to City of God, I believe City of Men is released tomorrow, which is the follow up by the same director. I haven't seen it, but it got good reviews. Stellar films I've seen lately: The Wicker Man (NOTE: I'm talking about the original. not the crappy Nicholas Cage follow up). The plot twists may be spoiled if you've seen the modern version, which was horrible. The Thin Blue Line Best documentary I've seen outside of hoop Dreams. It was so convincing, it got a man released from a life sentence for murder. Was done by Errol morris who also did the outstanding documentary Fog of War. Nashville Not for all tastes but this 160 minute film is Robert Altman at his peak (also see: Short Cuts, The Player). If you need results and constant action, it's not for you. But if you can pace yourself, this is quite solid in retrospect. In Bruges The best 2008 film I've seen yet- and this is coming from a guy who has always hated Colin farrell. Once This film proved that I actually do have a soft spot. (NOTE: My friends' band opened for The Frames- Glen Hansgard's band- At The Annex in Madison in 2002/2003. There was no more than 50 people in that room. Now the guy's playing the freakin Oscars. His only other movie was also great: The Commitments) One False Move Billy bob thornton's first writing effort, starring him and Bill Paxon. Though different, this film can easily be uttered in the same breath as Slingblade. (Note: first 15 minutes are not for the faint of heart) Bonnie and clyde You've either seen it or you haven't, but everyone knows about it. Some solid documentaries: My Kid Could Paint That, Air Guitar Nation, King of Kong: A Fist full of Quarters. Some solid band docs: We Jam Econo (Minutemen), Fearless Freaks (Flaming Lips), The Kids Are Alright (the Who), The Band that Would Be King (Half Japanese), The Devil and Daniel Johnston (Daniel Johnston), The Last Waltz (The band), The filth and the fury (sex pistols), New york doll (Arthur Kane of the N.Y. Dolls). I'm still yet to see the Joe strummer doc. Some cult classics: True Stories (if you liked the Talking Heads, you'll dig this film, written, directed, and starring David Byrne), 24 Hour Party People (also: see Control if you have the slightest affinity for Joy division) Ripley's Game (Same ripley Character as The Talented Mr. Ripley but a MUCH better film with John Malkovich playing a much better Tom Ripley) Darkman (directed by Sam Raimi who did the Spiderman movies, the Evil Dead movies, and Army of darkness. But this one is my favorite) Great directors: Coen brothers: Must see's (that you might not have) include Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing (2 of my all-time favorites). David mamet: House of games, Spanish Prisoner, Glengarry Glen Ross. Recently released Redbelt is worth a viewing. Woody Allen: When he misses, he's bad. But when he's on, he's great. See: Annie Hall, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and (if you like those 2) try Deconstructing Harry. Neil jordan: Crying Game Danny boyle: Trainspotting and Millions (an overlooked dark children's movie- pardon the oxymoron). P.T. Andersen: First film, Hard Eight, has been overlooked, but is great. Alternatively titled Sydney. David Arnofsky: Pi and Requiem for a Dream. Not for all tastes. Only if you dig the macabre. Robert Redford: Quiz Show did the worst at the box office of any of his movies, but I firmly believe it's his best. Richard Linklater: I haven't liked any of his recent stuff, but years ago his Waking Life and Before Sunrise were outstanding (Yes- I also have a soft spot for Dazed and Confused). Gus Van Sant: Everyone saw Good Will Hunting, but I actually preferred Finding Forrester. Elephant is a pitch black masterpiece (yes- it is basically a recreation of Columbine). and both My Own Private Idaho and Drugstore Cowboy were great.
  15. Colorado--Either Holliday or Cook though they might just take Fuentes Doubt it. As we have learned in the past, if your manager is the skipper of the All star team, you often get some of your players in "on scholarship."
  16. Talked to a friend of mine who works for the Brewers. This game was originally scheduled for Miller Park, but the Brewers didn't want the "sure sellouts (Cubs and Opening Day) to be reduced from two series to one, so the game was moved to Wrigley.
  17. Plus we'd have to go to the 5 man rotation right awy instead of the four.
  18. I would have to say that Omar Vizquel is one of the 2 best I've seen in my life (along with the Wizard). By the way, love the D. Boon pic and the Minutemen quote. One of my top 5 bands all time.
  19. 1. David Wells. Hey, that one's coming true! If he officially goes away than Curt Schilling moves on to the list. 2. Nancy Grace. How holier than thou can one person be? If anyone needs to be framed of a crime and presumed guilty, it's her. 3. Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer/Rupert Murdoch. I'm convinced that they are all the same person. 4. U2/Bono. I know, no one will agree. They're ubiquitous and I cannot get away from them. Only people who don't like U2 understand how they are unavoidable.
  20. Pictures of Doug Melvin in a compromising position.
  21. Holliday away from Coors is hitting .300/.363/.470. Is that supposed to be bad? And yes, Yount had 21 HRs and 103 RBIs on an 81-81 team. A good season, but not in line with the "HRs- RBIs- and/or playoff contention= MVP" line of thinking.
  22. "Mr. Narrator, this is Bob Dylan to me." Sweet, Brett! Minutemen are easily one of my top three bands all time. Love the picture of D Boon, though I miss the hell out of that guy. The only bumper sticker I've ever used was a D Boon sticker that Mike Watt gave to me.
  23. Yes, the same guy. It wasn't me who said those things. As far as needing the best RBI/HR numbers and/or needing to be in contention to win MVP, my question would be how did Yount win it in 1989? He didn't have any of those things.
  24. I've got Matt Holliday, Prince Fielder, and Miguel Cabrera as the major candidates at this time.
